A bra for your balls
Every once in a while I read an article and have to wonder if the editor of The Onion has traded places just to pull the leg of its readers. Such is the case with Fast Company’s article this past Monday, about Hane’s new underwear, which is described as “a bra for your balls“.
I’ve never been obsessed with underwear the way many gay men are but reading this article has also reminded me of the chasm that I sometimes feel separates many gay men from their heterosexual counterparts. The article expounds that “pouches are a growing trend in men’s underwear.” Really? I can’t tell if the writer is having fun with puns or if until recently, Hanes underwear model was a Mattel Ken doll?
The craziest part of the article is that it took Hanes two years to design their “Total Support Pouch”, and they have a patent pending on the design. While I’m sure everyone is high-fiving themselves over at Hanes, nobody is going to want that patent. The thin strip of fabric appears as if it will give guys a bit of breathing space but it looks more befitting for the balls of a 12 year old boy (let alone the rest of the guy) for all the contouring it provides. Nevermind it looks ugly as f***. However, I will give Hanes props for the cheeky marketing, which I didn’t previously associate with the brand.
Some popular underwear brands that target the gay market seem to better understand the male anatomy and provide far better cupping for both his sausage and meatballs if you get my drift. Although the price point is a bit higher, I would be willing to bet that most men would prefer their wives buy their bras from Victoria Secret rather than Target. For all the straight men out there (not that you’d be reading this blog) splurge and spend a bit more than $19.99 for a pack of three Hanes white briefs and you might be surprised by how much more comfortable you are.
The article is both funny and eyeroll worthy. If nothing else it has inspired me to purchase underwear so hat tip to Fast Company but I’ll pass on the new Hanes design.
Much thanks to Rob Orange for bringing this article to my attention.
Vintage gay
This is another photo that I can’t place but I like their style, sharing a milkshake. I suppose this could’ve been taken anytime from the 1950s to present day. I’d welcome your thoughts about the photo as well as when or where you think this may have been taken in the comments section.
I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.
This week on Instagram: jirglross
I thought quite a bit about featuring Ross’ Instagram account because he’s been inactive lately, but in the end I thought I’d share it because I never get tired at seeing photos of him and because past posts as a Furry Friday, Temptation Tuesday and even on Instagram a couple of years ago have consistently been well received.
Ross Jirgl is originally from Wisconsin. I believe he played football in college and was a college football coach for several years but now he is a performance coach. His exceptional looks also opened doors to modeling and acting and you’ll see plenty of examples of the former in his Instagram account.
You can follow this week’s featured account on Instagram here, and you can check out previously featured IG accounts here.
Caption this photo
I have a St. Patrick’s Day themed photo for this week’s post. Hopefully the caption I’ve shared inspires you to offer up one or two of your own. Leave a funny caption as a comment, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.
“In case you’re wondering, he’s taking the green line”
Temptation Tuesday
Each year, I post this photo of Seth Fornea the week of St. Patrick’s Day. I can’t remember when this photo started making the rounds but it still makes me laugh and brings new meaning to the phrase “my lucky charms”.
Men in kilts
Much thanks to Rob Orange (the witty blogger of Seduced by the New) for sharing this photo and recommending it for my weekly men in kilts post. I think it is perfect. What do you think?
Hollywood is back in Mass: The Tender Bar, Don’t Look Up, Kevin Can F*** Himself, and American Horror Story
Many of you may have noticed more filming signs popping up around Boston since the start of the New Year. It isn’t your imagination. A couple of filming crews recently wrapped up earlier this month, and George Clooney’s latest project started filming in and around Boston in early March.
“The Tender Bar” stars Ben Affleck and Lily Rabe and has George Clooney behind the camera, directing. The movie centers on a young J.R. (played by Tye Sheridan), who bonds with regulars at his uncle’s Long Island bar before leaving home to attend Yale. Ironically, Yale University is less than a two hour drive from Boston but the crew filmed the Yale graduation scenes at the Harvard Club in Back Bay on Commonwealth Avenue about 10-days ago. More recently the crew were filming at my neighborhood coffee shop, The South End Buttery.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions, Hollywood has been filming quite a bit in Boston. Last month film crews finished work on Netflix blockbuster film, “Don’t Look Up“, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothee Chalamet. And “Schitt’s Creek” actress Annie Murphy finished shooting a new series for AMC called “Kevin Can F*** Himself” in the suburbs of Boston.
Additionally, the popular FX horror series “American Horror Story” has been busy filming around Provincetown for their upcoming Season 10 which they have code named, Pilgrim. Filming had originally been scheduled to take place in the spring of 2020 but was rescheduled due to the coronavirus.
BosGuy cooks: Brussels sprout salad
I love this salad, because it is always delicous and is incredibly versatile. You can add whatever you like to the roasted Brussels sprouts, but I like adding fresh fruit or raw vegetables for the texture and flavor. I typically opt for bell peppers for the pop of color, nuts and cheese for the crunch and flavor, but add what you like and more importantly what you have that is fresh in your kitchen.
I first wrote about this salad in 2018 and in that recipe I used pomegranate, slivered almonds and goat cheese. Sound tempting? It is and you can check out that recipe here. Above is a more recent variation on the recipe which includes: Brussels sprouts, red and yellow bell peppers, pine nuts and shaved Parmesean cheese with olive oil and a balsamic reduction drizzled over the salad.
There are two parts to this recipe. The first part involves prepping your veggies and roasting the Brussels sprouts. The second part involves letting the sprouts cool and assembling the salad.
The star in this recipe is the Brussels sprouts so be sure you roast them to your satisfaction. I do this by slicing the vegetables in half and cutting off the botoms of their stems then drizzling grapeseed oil, salt and pepper in a large bowl and hand tossing them to make sure they are coated with the oil and seasonings before placing them into an oven at 400 degrees for 20-25 minutes. When there are about 5-7 minutes left I flip them over. The image above is what the Brussels sprouts looked like with ~5 minutes remaining.
When I take them out of the oven, I let them rest for about 5-10 minutes then I put them in a bowl and into the refrigerator for another 10 minutes to cool down. Once they are no longer hot and steaming, I take them out and slice them 2-3 times (depending on their size) from the core to the top and add them to a large salad bowl with the other chopped veggies and ingredients (minus the cheese add just prior to dressing).
Once everything is assembled to your satisfaction, add your cheese and dressing of choice. I like extra virgin olive oil and balsamic reduction glaze. Add whatever other seasonings you like and serve cold.
This salad holds up for a couple of days in the refrigerator, provided you have not dressed the ingredients. The oil and vinegar will make this turn into more of a mushy consistency if you dress the entire salad and leave the leftovers overnight in the refrigerator.
Scruffy Sunday
It may be a contrived pose, but it still looks like a really wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning.
