BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

I find myself on a tiger, with a giraffe in front and a lion directly behind me. To my right is a drop off. Where am I?

Boston rocker: Juliana Hatfield sings Olivia Newton-John

Olivia Newton John, A little more loveA little known fact about your’s truly is that I spent most of my 20s seeing local bands play rather than dancing at clubs. One of those local musicians who I really loved was / is Juliana Hatfield. She had brief brush with mainstream success with songs like Universal Heartbeat and Spin the Bottlebut the quirky rocker from Boston was always more at home under the radar.

Last year I saw her for the first time in years and she still sounds great. At the ACLU benefit here in Boston Juliana performed her song Short Fingered Man, a song about a certain someone living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue these days.

So when I heard a track from her forthcoming Olivia Newton-John tribute album on Kenneth in the (212), I instantly started playing her cover A Little More Love The CD won’t be available until April 13th but you can pre-order it on Amazon, here: Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John.

Vintage gay

Unfortunately between the time I wrote this post and today, the video of the 1945 Gay Home Movie on YouTube came down. The video in question was discovered by St. Louis filmmaker Geoff Story when he stumbled upon some old film reels at an estate sale at a mansion on Lindell Boulevard in St. Louis, which used to be the home of the now-deceased Buddy Walton.

Fortunately you can still watch the brief video here.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Lyric Stage Co’s, Road Show

Stephen SondheimLooking for a date night suggestion for a friend who loves musicals? Perhaps you’d like to check out The Lyric Stage Company’s latest production, Road Show.  The Sondheim musical made its New England debut when it opened at the Lyric Stage Co. earlier this month and it runs through February 11th.

Road Show was inspired by a New Yorker article Stephen Sondheim read about the real-life Mizner brothers, Addison and Wilson, who were born in California in the late 1800s. Beginning at the deathbed of their father who encourages them to go out and mold the new nation, the musical spans the globe from the Klondike gold rush to India, Hawaii, Guatemala, New York, and eventually the real-estate boom of Boca Raton, Florida. Over 40 years, the brothers seek out the amorphous and elusive American Dream through the booms and busts of the early 20th century, with bouts of brotherly love and hate. The musical travelogue takes a close look at the optimism and opportunism of the time through the lens of two ambitious, eccentric, and charming individuals.

TennisKyle Edmund is a 23 year old professional tennis player with a big serve and a surprisingly strong start to the 2018 tennis season. Currently ranked 49, his ranking is certain to jump after Edmund stunned everyone at the Australian Open when he beat #3 Grigor Dimitrov in the Quarter Finals.

If you enjoy tennis, you’ll like his photos of life as a player traveling to play tennis tournaments around the globe. His life is so different and seems exotic as compared to my routine.

Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018, I want to feature the LGBTQ groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life.

If you’d like to have your club / team featured, please email me at bosguymail@gmail.com or via FB messenger.

GTI Properties proposes new residential building at 490 Harrison Avenue

South End, SoWa, GTI Properties, 490 Harrison Avenue

Outline roughly depicts 490 Harrison Ave. 16-unit expansion proposed by GTI Properties || Photo from Google Maps

Last month GTI Properties shared plans with the Old Dover Neighborhood Association to build a new 70′ residential building, extending the existing apartment building at 490 Harrison Avenue.

The proposed design includes plans for sixteen rental units as well as a ground level 5.000 sq ft retail space along with two smaller storefronts in the back of the building. Apartments will range from 1,200 – 1,300 sq ft. No information was provided on the exact number of parking spaces the new building would shrink the existing parking lot. Assuming the project receives the necessary approvals, GTI Properties would look to break ground starting January 2019.

Apartments at 490 Harrison Avenue currently rent for $2,400-$2,600 for one bedroom and $2,800-$4,250 for two bedrooms, begging the question will the neighborhood and city ask for affordable units to be included before approving the project?

One year later: Still she persisted

Cambridge / Boston Women’s March on the Cambridge Common, January 20, 2018.  Photo Credit: Greg Cook || gregcookland.com

One year after the historic Women’s March of 2017 and just days after the Federal Government was forced to shutdown, thousands took to the streets in cities all across the United States. While the massive crowds that overtook and overwhelmed the streets of Boston were smaller this year when people gathered on the Cambridge Common, it remains inspiring for me to see people braving the cold to exercise their rights and make their voices heard.

Thanks to Greg Cook for sharing some of the best protest signs from Saturday’s Boston/Cambridge Women’s March 2018: The People Persist.
