BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle

With 3 or 4 points, I can cause pain,
If you use me a lot and weight you will gain.

Sometimes I’m paired with a blade,
I’m quite useful and totally man made.

What am I?

US News & World Report ranks Mass. best state in U.S.

March 2017Recently I wrote about the survey findings from Boston Consulting Group, that showed Massachusetts taking the top spot in their “well being” study. They cited a healthy population that has near universal healthcare insurance, education and an incredibly robust and balanced economy as reasons for the top ranking.

Just two weeks later U.S. News and World Report awarded Massachusetts its top honor, citing the state’s continuing academic achievement, innovative health care system, and strong economy in its ‘Best States’ ranking – sound familiar?massachusetts The US News & World report evaluates all fifty states across seven categories: health care, education, opportunity, economy, infrastructure, crime and corrections, and government. Massachusetts ranked No. 1 in education and No. 2 in healthcare, and placed within the top ten for economy and crime and corrections.  There are many surveys that evaluate quality of life and economic opportunity.  When you start seeing different surveys finding the same thing over and over again it becomes a trend.

Where did your state rank? Check out the listing of all fifty states here.

1955 portrait of Donald Windham (left) with life-partner Sandy Campbell by celebrity gay photographer and writer Carl Van Vechten.

Donald Windham and Sandy Campbell were a well-known couple in New York’s gay literary circles. It was at a chance meeting at Paul Cadmus’ studio that Donald met Sandy, who was modeling for one of Cadmus’ paintings. Windham and Campbell began a 45 year relationship that led to a collaboration as avid book collectors, voracious readers, and friends with many of the most important literary figures of their time. The couple lived together from 1943 until Campbell’s death in 1988. Windham passed away 22 years later in 2010.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? The Coming of Light by Mark Strand

beach, man on beach, sunrise, sunsetThe Coming of Light
Even this late it happens:
the coming of love, the coming of light.
You wake and the candles are lit as if by themselves,
stars gather, dreams pour into your pillows,
sending up warm bouquets of air.
Even this late the bones of the body shine
and tomorrow’s dust flares into breath.

I had never heard of this poem by Mark Strand until late December when The Closet Professor (NSFW) posted it on his website.

Mark Strand was a Canadian-born American poet, essayist and translator. He was born on Prince Edward Island in a secular Jewish family. He received a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1999 for Blizzard of One. You can purchase some of his works including The Coming of Light on Amazon.com, here.

P.S.A. on access to bathrooms for trans people

LGBTQ, Trans Community, gay BostonTake a moment to watch this P.S.A. regarding laws in some states that look to restrict bathroom access to the Trans population.

The video opens with this very valid point, “Every year, some fool tries to trick people into thinking this is an issue,” activists said in the video. “And somehow thinks the way to protect privacy and bathrooms is by policing them? The biggest irony is that their solution will create the very thing they’re trying to stop.”

However my favorite point shared is “more U.S. Senators have been arrested for public misconduct in bathrooms than trans people.”

Boston Ballet Artifact 2017

It is rare for me to have people (aside from my closest circle of friends) ask my opinion about a show I recently attended so I was surprised by the handful of emails and direct messages on Twitter asking me about Boston Ballet’s Artifact 2017, which is currently at The Boston Opera House through March 5.

I’m at a loss for words on how to describe the ballet. While dance and ballet in particular makes me appreciate the athleticism and grace required, this is the first ballet I’ve ever seen that made me feel anxious. Artifact 2017 has challenged my perception of what ballet is and what it is capable of evoking in me.  Roslyn Sulcas who writes for The  NY Times had a great article about the Boston Ballet – Forsythe relationship and the importance of Artifact. She writes:

“Artifact” was a manifesto of Mr. Forsythe’s intent to investigate and extend the boundaries of ballet technique and conventions, and it is still an urtext in his oeuvre…

You can also read the glowing Boston Globe review of Artifact 2017 here. Tickets remain available for most shows, but the production closes on March 5th so don’t delay and make plans to see this production. It is the kind of work people will be referencing long after the curtain drops after the final performance.

#HoldTight campaign

When you feel like letting go… #HoldTight.

A new advertisement campaign from Australian bank ANZ is urging LGBT couples to hold hands during difficult times with its #HoldTight campaign.

Ever since the U.S. Presidential election in November hate crimes have risen. According to The Southern Poverty Law Center an astounding 867 cases of hateful harassment or intimidation in the United States were reported in the 10 days following the November 8 election. While many of these cases are directed at minorities and foreigners, the LGBT community has been targeted as well, making ANZ’s message relevant here in the U.S. Be safe and #HoldTight.
