Jordan Lofts in South End

Holland ConstructionJordan Lofts on Harrison Avenue was pitched as a new residential development to the BRA a couple years ago.  Last year the project received board approval to create 18 condominium units and 20 parking spaces. Construction has been underway since the spring.

Unlike other projects in the neighborhood there is virtually no news about Jordan Lofts. Their website still promises a 2012 opening; let’s hope the developer, Holland Construction, pays more attention to detail on the condominiums than they’ve shown their website.

Does anyone know what is happening with Jordan Lofts? When the condominiums are expected to come on the market and their price range? A commercial space appears on the ground floor and any information about that would also be of interest to me.

So far there has been no updates on the famed restaurant’s Twittah handle, @TurkeyHash but yours truly will be keeping an eye on the account for anymore news.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Kettlebell WorkoutEssential lift of the month: Kettlebell swing

The Kettlebell swing is a full body movement that is an essential component to any exercise regimen and fitness goal.  Primary muscles used: Glutes, Hamstrings, Lats, Rhomboids, and traps.

Benefits of adding the kettlebell swing to your regimen:

  • It is fun and puts a similar stimulus on your glutes and hamstrings as plyometrics WITHOUT the wear on tear on your joints.
  • Good for cardio, strength, and putting on lean mass.
  • Works great as a tool to perform with cardiovascular tabata training.

How to do it:

Realm health and fitness tips by Kyle– Start with a Kettlebell on the floor in a “football hiking” position firmly grasp the handle with both hands and feel the tension in your glutes and hamstrings while keeping your back flat.

– “Hike” the kettlebell back in between your legs and snap your hips forward in a thrusting motion to propel the kettlebell forward so you are standing tall.

-Ride the momentum of the kettlebell, and let it fall between your legs before swinging up in a pendulum like motion again.

-You should feel your hamstrings and glutes doing the work. If you feel any pain in your lower back or shoulder – stop.

Before attempting this exercise do more in depth research or consult a reputable personal trainer on how to attempt this lift. Listen to your body and DO NOT work through pain.

Warwick Rowers crowdfunder has kicked off

gay sportI’m sure nearly every gay man who reads this blog is familiar with the Warwick Rowers in the UK who for the past few years have been posing naked and selling calendars in an attempt to draw attention to homophobia in sport. Proceeds they raise go to sportallies.org; a group dedicated to promoting inclusion and challenging homophobia through sport.

While the video and calendar these guys produce is NSFW – their cause is most worthwhile so I wanted to let you know that they have kicked off their crowdfunder campaign for their 2015 calendar.

If inclined, I’d direct you to warwickrowers.org/crowdfunder.

If you liked the video you may want to do some shopping on their website. Remember that the proceeds go to fight homophobia in sport, warwickrowers.org/shop.

Thanks to Lambert Rahming for bringing this to my attention.

Boston is ranked one of America’s most walkable cities

3 gay days in BostonSmart Growth America has issued their annual report that analyzes how walkable the country’s top 30 metropolitan areas.  Boston (again) ranked in the top five – ranking 3rd – joining:  Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. You can read more about this on Smart Growth America’s website.

Last fall Curbed Boston shared a heat map showing how walkable different neighborhoods in Boston are. North End, Chinatown and Bay Village earned a walk score of 98; the South End received an impressive score of 95.  Check out your neighborhood’s walkscore here.

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to either take public transportation or walk to work since 1999.  My neighborhood also makes it very easy to get around without needing a car which is great.
