Happily Filled

No Vacancy SignLast week when I was walking around in Ogunquit, Maine I saw this sign.  I must have been in a pervy state of mind, because I laughed out loud when I saw how The Sparhawk chooses to let people know they have no vacancy.

The marketing professional in me immediately thought of suggesting the following tagline to the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce, Get Happily Filled in Ogunquit.

Have a great 4th of July

Independence DayMany companies in the US are closing this afternoon ahead of our Independence holiday that is officially on July 4th.  For the past four years we have celebrated the holiday down in Provincetown but this year we have opted to stay home and enjoy the holiday at home in Boston. We’ll stay far away from the craziness at the Hatch Shell but look forward to the celebrations and cook outs here at home.

If you celebrate the holiday – enjoy the time away from work, have a wonderful time.

Museum of Fine Arts BostonA rare copy of the Magna Carta is now on display in Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts through September 1, 2014.   Keep in mind that thanks to the Highland Foundation “Free Fun Fridays” on Friday, July 18th the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is open and free to the public, offering you an excellent opportunity to see this historic document up close.

Mario Testino photographs David Gandy

Instagram towel shots by TestinoI’ve had a thing for David Gandy from the first  moment I set eyes on this 30-something English model.  I’ve also long appreciated the eye of Mario Testino so when I saw that the famous photographer was posting a series of pictures of famous men in nothing but a towel I felt it was my civic duty to share the news.

Perhaps this offers an incentive to finally join Instagram.

4th of July celebrations in Provincetown

Sergio and I will be in Boston for this year’s 4th of July celebrations, but here is a quick look back at all the fun in Provincetown at last year’s 4th of July Week.

Hillary Clinton on the Hobby Lobby ruling

Supreme court ruling on birth controlI’m irritated beyond reason that we continue to treat corporations like people.

Moreover, I can’t believe that discussions like this remain in American politics. Does anyone else find it strange that certain forms of birth control intended for women get to be determined by employers, but drugs like Viagra and Cialis are covered for Hobby Lobby employees.  Seems like a misogynistic bent to a firm’s health care plan.  To those who would say the employee has the option to not work at the Hobby Lobby I think you miss some pretty important points.

Ptown connections

Seth Fornea

Seth Fornea at Boatslip in Ptown July 4, 2013

Ptown is such a fun place. One never knows who you’ll bump into when you are there.  An old friend you’ve not seen in years (or perhaps you didn’t even know was gay), a new boyfriend in the making (more than a few romances have started in this tiny town), and of course handsome, gay actors, models, etc…

Marriage equality makes in roads in Kentucky (and maybe Colorado)

Marriage Equality in Kentucky, same sex marriage KentuckyYesterday was not a good day for those opposed to marriage equality.  A Federal judge in the red state of Kentucky struck down the state’s 2004 marriage ban – making this the 23rd pro-marriage ruling in the past year.  Read more here.

Additionally, six same-sex couples from Colorado filed a federal lawsuit challenging their state’s ban on the freedom to marry yesterday.  Based on the Kentucky ruling (not to mention the 22 other states that have ruled the same over the past 12 months) it would seem likely that the increasingly purple state of Colorado may be on it’s way to saying “I do” to marriage equality as well.

State Senate votes to let cities regulate liquor licenses

State Liquor licenseOn Tuesday our State Senate approved an economic development bill that had a provision in it that gives cities and towns more control over liquor licenses.  Massachusetts currently caps the number of licenses allowed in a city or town, mandating that any requests for additional licenses must be brought before the State Legislature.

The Senate’s vote runs counter to The House which did not include the liquor license proposal is its version of the same bill.  That means the next step is to bring the bill to a committee tasked with writing a compromise; lets hope that they maintain the liquor license plan in the final bill.  If you feel strongly about this, I suggest you contact your state representative.

Don’t know your representative or how to reach them?  Link Here.

Chef Mario Batali to open Babbo Pizzeria in Seaport

Babbo Pizzeria BostonThe Boston Globe reported that celebrity chef Mario Batali will open an 8,700 square foot restaurant at 11 Fan Pier in the Seaport District by the end of this year. The restaurant will be called Babbo Pizzeria and will include three bars – one each for cocktails, pizza and antipasti.  Plan designs also include a large patio and private dining space.  While the Seaport has seen many restaurant openings in recent years, this is one of among a handful that I’m excited about.  I have high hopes and expectations for Babbo Pizzeria’s wood-fired pizzas and pastas.

Weekend in Ogunquit

Welcome to Ogunquit MaineThis past weekend Sergio and I packed our bags and joined friends for a fun weekend in Ogunquit, Maine.  As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, Ogunquit is another popular beach town for the LGBT community.  It is a much smaller, less busy option to the craziness that defines Provincetown during the summer months.

I really love going to the beach in Ogunquit but if that isn’t your thing, the nearly 1.5 mile Marginal Way walk is a great alternative, as is spending time in the tiny village shopping, eating or walking down to the more quiet and picturesque – Perkins Cove. Below are some photos from this past weekend’s fun in Ogunquit.

If you have any questions about planning a day trip or longer stay in Ogunquit, Maine – feel free to reach out to me with your questions.
