Restaurant review: Claires on Cedros

Claire's on CedrosA couple weeks ago the entire family packed up and headed to Southern California to visit my brother, sister-in-law and niece. We spent the first night in Solana Beach, California and the next morning we converged on Claires on Cedros to have breakfast together.  I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say it was the best breakfast I’ve had in recent memory.  This cute restaurant that was obviously at one time a tiny ranch house has a cute front yard and a much larger back patio where we were able to sit outside and enjoy our meal together.

Claires on Cedros in Solana BeachClaires breakfast menu is too extensive to do justice and unfortunately the online menu doesn’t include all their pastries which you notice both by scent and sight when you first walk into the cute restaurant. I couldn’t help but start breakfast with this homemade cherry scone ($3.50) that came with cherry jam and butter. It was served warm and was delicious.

I also ordered the Caprese Frittata ($10.95) that came with homemade ricotta, provolone, both oven roasted and fresh tomatoes, topped with arugula salad served with fresh pesto and drizzle of basil oil. I devoured the over sized breakfast plate, loving every bite.omelet at claires on cedrosSergio seemed to enjoy his eggs and french toast breakfast as did the rest of my family.  If I lived in Solana Beach, CA I’m pretty sure this would be one of my go-to breakfast options.

Claire’s is open daily and located at 246 N. Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach, California.  For more information about Claire’s visit their website at clairesoncedros.com.

São Paulo is one of my favorite cities in the world to spend a few days. With a metropolitan area that includes approximately 21 million people, it also makes it one of the world’s biggest cities and their pride celebrations reflect that with an estimated 2 – 3 million Paulistas and visitors from all over Brazil, South America and the world coming to one of the largest Pride festivals in the world.

The Pride Parade will begin in approximately one hour. You can check out the pride route courtesy of  Gay Pride Brazil here.

Happy Pride São Paulo.

Do you remember this 2008 video of weather man, Justin Mosely? Poor guy had the fright of his life while the camera was rolling and gave a lot of us a good laugh at his expense. I hope he is good these days and in a cleaner studio that is roach-free.

Have a great Saturday night.

Thought of the day: Bartender

South End cheap eats

South End cheap eatsThe reopening of Delux Cafe in the South End today ends what seems to have been a rash of new restaurant openings here and around the city that only have dishes in the $20 – $30 price range.

So I wanted to dedicate this post to Delux and all the other cheap eat alternatives here in the South End.  For the sake of argument I’m suggesting a restaurant with the majority of main plates priced less than $15 constitutes a “cheap eat”.  Aside from Delux Cafe, here are a few restaurants to consider.

ADDIS RED SEA is an authentic Ethiopian restaurant located in the heart of the neighborhood on Tremont St. Main dishes range in price between $8-$15; sharing plates makes dining even more affordable.

ANCHOVIES is nestled discretely on Columbus Avenue and serves home style Italian-American cooking. Main dishes for dinner all come with bread and a house salad and range from $12-$15.

PARISH CAFE S.E. is on the corner of Tremont and Mass and serves up American style comfort food for $14-$15 in such large servings half portions are worth considering unless you are really hungry.

PICCO The Pizza & Ice Cream Co. (PICCO) menu is mostly pizza, sandwiches and pasta. This place has a large patio that also provides excellent people watching. Main dishes range from $8-$14. For an even cheaper option; split a large pizza and delicious dessert.

What are some of your favorite cheap eats for dinner in the South End and around the city?

SoWa open market returns this Sunday

SoWa Open MarketIn case you missed it, this Sunday the SoWa Art Walk will take place alongside the opening of the 2014 SoWa Open Market.

According to the website this year’s market will be even larger with more stalls at the farmer’s market, more artisans and nearly 30 food trucks every Sunday from May to October.

The Farmer’s and Artisan markets will be open from 10 AM – 4 PM with the Food Truck “Court” as they call it open from 11 AM – 4 PM.  If you are new to the area or unfamiliar with the South End, check out this handy map of the surrounding streets.

Delux Cafe reopens today at 5pm

Dexlux CafeYou may recall Delux Cafe was incorrectly reported that it had closed earlier this year (for the record, that incorrect report didn’t come from this blog – at least not this time).  The restaurant had actually been sold to a longtime employee and they closed temporarily to give the place a good cleaning and do some remodeling.

It appears the remodeling is now complete because the Delux Cafe Twitter handle today has indicated they will be reopening at 5pm.

Union Bar and Grille: Caprice cocktail

Union Bar and Grille Caprice CocktailGin lovers are going to be happy with Union Bar & Grille’s new spring cocktail menu.

On a recent visit I had the opportunity to try a delicious gin concoction from Union Bar & Grille’s spring cocktail menu called The Caprice. It is made Brockmans gin.  You’ve probably never heard of this fragrant gin that is flavored with blueberry (you heard that correctly Brockmans is a blueberry gin).  It is new to the market and is not currently available for sale to the public and is only available at a few restaurants in the area.  Union Bar & Grille’s spring cocktail, The Caprice, is made with white lillet, Benedictine Candied Meyer lemon.  Let me know if you try The Caprice and what you think. Brockman’s could be my new favorite gin. I plan on going back to try a Brockman’s gin and tonic. #Addicted

Union Bar & Grille is located at 1357 Washington Street in the South End.
