Tonight the Boston Pops open for their first holiday performance of the 2013 season. The concert series will run through December 24th. Holiday Pops is one of the most popular seasonal traditions and although I do not have plans to attend performances this seasons, it is a magnificent show. Tickets have been on sale so availability is limited but you may purchase tickets here.
Below is a clip from the 2010 Boston Pops Holiday season. It gives you an idea of what to expect if you’ve never attended this Boston tradition before.
Actually more like moves like BosGuy, which is one reason why I need to be intoxicated to go dancing. My sister sent me this funny video last month, and I thought it was hilarious.
I may be out of town vacationing in South America but I wanted to give The Lyric Stage of Boston a shout out for their new play that opened this past week.
Becky’s New Car is a comedy about a woman who is bored with her life until she happens upon a wealthy suitor who presumes she is a widow. Before Becky realizes it, she finds herself leading a double life that spirals out of her control.
Unfortunately I’ll miss this performance which opened on the 29th and will run through December 22nd.
Estelle’s Southern Cuisine opened in the South End approximately one year ago but it wasn’t until recent that I visited this casual neighborhood restaurant. Estelle’s won me over with its easy going atmosphere, continuous stream of 80s pop rock that played all evening, and the impressive selection (30 all included) of beers on tap. While I lived in Atlanta for a few years, I’ll be among the first to admit I’m not a Southern cuisine aficionado so my comments are more focused on my impressions rather than if Estelle’s passes the muster as an authentic southern cuisine restaurant.
Estelle’s menu is reasonably priced with Starters ranging from $5-$14; Burgers & Po’Boys ranging from $8-$13; and Main Plates ranging from $18-$26. I started my dinner with the Bitter Greens Salad that has a delicious sherry – mustard vinaigrette, beets, goat cheese & orange – spicy pickled carrots. The salad portion was so large it could easily be shared but that didn’t prevent me from eating nearly all of it myself.
Following the salad I ordered what the bartender told me is a reoccurring special, a Pulled Pork sandwich. This too proved to be addictive. The pulled pork was piled so generously on the bun that I needed my fork to eat some of the excess off before I could even attempt to pick it up to eat.
Against my better judgement I succumbed and ordered dessert when I heard the bartender describe how the chef puree’s peanut butter and banana and serves it on a light thin pie crust topped with chocolate and served with a side of fresh whipped cream. This was so decadently good I know I’ll have dreams about Estelle’s Chocolate Peanut Butter and Banana Pie.
From start to finish I enjoyed my dinner. This latest venture from the Wilcox Hospitality Group get two thumbs up from me.

After spending a week in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio and I packed up to drive to Paraty, Brazil – a Portuguese colonial town on the coast approximately 2.5 – 3 hours drive South from Rio de Janeiro. I plan to completely decompress by sleeping constantly, reading when I’m awake and doing nothing more strenuous than ordering a cold beverage from the beach.
This marks the last leg of the trip for Sergio and me before we drive back on Friday to fly back home to Boston. While I’m looking forward to returning home, I have to admit I’ll miss the sun and warmth. I’ll write more about that and my other adventures after I return home, but until then you can read about last year’s trip to Florianopolis, Brazil.

Hey night owls, starting in March or April 2014, the MBTA will start running all subway trains and the 15 most popular bus routes until 3 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday only as part of a one year test to see if there is sufficient demand.
The news comes on the heels of the MBTA releasing its average daily ridership numbers for the month of October which was up 4.3% over October 2012 – totaling 1.38 million passenger trips per weekday.
If the one-year pilot program is successful, it will be extended. More information here.
OMG, check out how Sam Horowitz from Dallas made his entrance to his bar mitzvah. Sam was clearly having the time of his life.
Have you seen this cute video from the Chicago Gay Hockey Association? I love it when these videos are created; I recently posted this video from the Boston Friends Lesbians And Gays Football League.
However, I really love this video that the Chicago Gay Hockey Association (CGHA) posted on YouTube late last week. Great job pulling this together, bravo guys.
Although Hawaiian governor, Neil Abercrombie, signed a bill legalizing gay marriage on November 13th, today is the first day same sex marriages can legally be performed in The Aloha State.
Mahalo Hawaii
Marriage equality was never a question once Massachusetts drew a line in the sand legalizing it in 2004 (more about that here.) The only question was how long would we have to wait? With the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in 2011, the US Supreme Court declaring DOMA unconstitutional in 2013 and public opinion now firmly on our side one can more confidently envision a wave of state legislatures and governors recognizing same sex marriage.
I’m still traveling in Brazil, but I wanted to remind everyone that today is World AIDS Day.
