President Obama “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit

President ObamaPresident Obama sat down and responded to questions on Reddit on Wednesday, proving yet again that his team really are masters of new technology and integrating it into their campaign.

Obama’s “Ask Me Anything” stint on Reddit resulted in nearly 4 million views on the first page of the Q&A and nearly 24,000 comments.   One question he was asked which I think we can all relate to regardless of our opinion of the man was: How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?

President Obama’s response: It’s hard – truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I’m spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store – so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I’m in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm – even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I’m back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating – this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER – if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com. By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience – NOT BAD

Boston’s new hostel

Hotel rates in Boston often run $300 – $500 a night for a standard room at a chain hotel.  However, travelling became a bit cheaper in Boston this summer when the city’s new 480 bed hostel opened in June 2012.

This new property offers those backpacker-friendly group rooms for $29 a night as well as private rooms for $120 – $150.  The rooms are spartan as compared to four and five star hotels, but they are comfortable and a good option for the right traveler. Earlier this summer The Boston Globe included a series of photos showcasing the property which you may see here.

Conveniently located in Boston’s Theater District this state of the art building is steps to all the downtown neighborhoods of Boston.  While Boston’s hostel may not be for everyone – this beautiful new building provides options to those on a budget.

Dairy Queen gone wild

I know where we can go to get ice cream tonight.

Red and Yellow

So I’m shallow. You are too if you keep staring.

Tweet of the day: Chris Christie

governor christieLast night the Republican Party had Gov. Christie deliver the keynote speech at the Republican National Convention, which is a political party meeting to officially nominate Mitt Romney.

At the moment, there is no bigger darling of the Republican Party than the governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie. I don’t mean that literally as you may conclude from his photo, but more in terms of his popularity.  However, I thought his speech was really lacking and clearly so did David Axelrod who runs Obama’s campaign.

For those who may not follow politics. Many believe that Christie doesn’t believe that Romney can win in 2012 and has his eyes on the Presidential election in 2016.

ZOMG and Twittersphere

English remains a vibrant language, and proof of that is each year when the Oxford Dictionary adds a long list of new words.  These “new” words become “legitimized” (is that a word?).This year the online dictionary blog for Oxford Dictionary has added ZOMG and Twittersphere.

For those still in school, I’d challenge you to work one of these terms into your next report.  For example, if you are studying the French Revolution you might write something like when Mary Antoinette said “Let them eat cake”, the reaction from the people of Paris was something akin to “ZOMG…” I’d refrain from using the phrase  “oh no she didn’t” since I’m not sure there is a literal translation in French.

Democrats vs Republicans: An inconvenient truth

politicsI’ll assume the numbers are accurate since the sources cited are legit.  What an inconvenient truth for Republicans.

Happy birthday Jennifer Coolidge

Jennifer Coolidge may be one of my absolute favorite female actors. I first saw her in Best in Show, but truthfully she’s been a part of many excellent movies.

Coincidentally, Jennifer happens to be a native of Boston and often returns. I absolutely love her and hope she has a wonderful birthday.

Justin Ito-Adler new manager at Clio / Uni

Left: Justin Ito-Adler, Manager Clio / Uni
Right: Ken Oringer, Chef and Restaurant Owner

I don’t often write about personnel changes in the Boston restaurant scene mostly because it would be a full-time job and there are already several sites that do a great job at following these changes.

However, earlier this week I learned that Justin will be leaving the South End after working here for nearly four years; first at Rocca Boston and more recently the Aquitaine Group’s, Union Bar & Grille.

Starting this week, Justin Ito-Adler joins Ken Oringer’s management team at his flagship restaurant Clio / Uni, which recently underwent a significant makeover.  No doubt Justin’s enthusiasm and youth will help this culinary gem, which in recent years had seemed a bit stuffy.

Best of luck Justin.  We will miss having you so near us.

South End Buttery Market

The South End Buttery Market opened at lunch time today at 312-2 Shawmut Avenue next door to the cafe.

The space was formerly the home to Hudson Furniture and it has been completely redesigned.  The South End Buttery Market has a fully functioning bakery that will make many of the delectable dishes for sale there and yummy treats you can find next door at the cafe and the soon to open second cafe on Clarendon Street.

South End ButteryThe cafe and restaurant next door will continue to sell coffee, tea, baked goods and offer brunch and dinner.  The market will have provisions and tempting plates you can take to-go; giving residents in the South End another excuse not to cook. When you are next in the neighborhood stop by and check out this very welcome addition to the South End.

Stud undies

Since this is obviously a gag gift, they should come clean, remove the “for adults” and replace with “for those annoying bachelorette parties“.

Tuesday’s Trivia

In 1770 a wealthy merchant who would become a famous patriot in the American Revolution purchased this home in Boston’s North End neighborhood.  Can you name this famous man?
