Hanging with the bears

Just a lil old picture of me cuddling with a couple of bears that were sitting outside next door to the hotel I was staying at when I was visiting NYC. I have to say, they were very friendly but more of the strong silent type.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome.  If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter. Leave them a nice comment and start following these guys.

Hairymodelwanab – I started following Paul at the start of summer. This Brit has more than a killer body. He’s also very playful on Twitter and easy to communicate with. His flirtatious nature will keep you coming back for more #Promise

Nickos_00 – Nick is the 1st Caribbean guy I think I’ve profiled.Although his profile makes no mention of it, he’s rather sweet and a runner. As much as I like his current profile pic (and who wouldn’t), I’d love to see a shirtless image on his twitter account #FingersCrossed

BennMendoza is one of the more interesting characters I follow on Twitter. He’s part aerial performer, part acrobatic, part circus entertainer and all parts amazing. His website also features some amazing photos of his performances, www.bennmendoza.com#Wow

Finding a bit of heaven in Hell’s Kitchen

I arrived in NYC on Friday with my buddy Paul for a fun weekend in the city. We took the Acela from Amtrak down to the city and arrived in plenty of time to enjoy Boxers, crazy happy hour festivities.

Bars are not allowed to have happy hour promotions in Massachusetts so true to form we drank more than intended and left pleasantly buzzed with plans to head out to Hell’s Kitchen after a quick pit stop back at the hotel to freshen up and a quick bite to eat.

We’d both been to Hell’s Kitchen but it had been several years (at least for me since my previous visit). One of the things I really like about the neighborhood is how easy it is to bar hop. We started by checking out Industry. It was one of the busier bars we visited and the music was great, but neither Paul nor I were feeling it so we walked across the street to Therapy. However, Therapy was fairly dead by comparison so we opted to head over to Ritz.

Entering Ritz would make just about anyone feel claustrophobic but of all the places, this had the most energy and the by far – the best people watching. We worked our way to the back room and danced up along the walls.

Paul and I spent most of the evening watching a young couple “get familiar” with each other, some A-List wannabes with killer bodies shake their groove thing and chatting with people to our left and right – there always seemed to be a constant ebb and flow that brought a new someone every 5-10 minutes.

There are plenty of other bars all close by and when visiting its so easy to bar hop its enough to make my head spin. What bars in HK do you like and why? Leave a comment to share because I’m hoping I can head back soon.

DASOUL underwear

One of the unintended consequences of having a blog is that a lot of advertiser and PR people flood your inbox promoting their products and services. I generally ignore these requests and choose not to have advertisers on my blog. However, today I received an email from the people at DASOUL.

According to the email, DASOUL creates an imaginative, yet classic new perspective in the men’s underwear market. I’m not really sure what that means exactly, but then they threw in some images of their models and a link to a promo video. I dunno, but something about sexy guys flexing for the camera wearing nothing but underwear totally appeals to me (there’s a reason I add #ImShallow to the end of many of my tweets).

Maybe this sort of thing does nothing for you, but it was just the visual stimulation I was looking for to get me through the last bit of my day today.

As some of my previous posts have shown (i.e. Zipcar Low-Car Diet SWAG), I do love free stuff so if DASOUL would like to send me some of their product to try out, I’d be very appreciative. I can’t compete with the gorgeous male models they have but I’ll include a picture of the merchandise on my blog should it arrive.

Free stuff to do in Boston this Friday

Although I’m off to Gotham this weekend, that doesn’t mean I’m unaware of all the fun things happening in Boston. If you don’t have plans this Friday or if you are tired of doing the same thing, consider one of these options.

Shakespeare on the Common Once again this year, The Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. is providing free performances. This year they are performing All’s Well that Ends Well through August 14th down by the bandstand on the Boston Common. Invite that special someone to join you Friday evening under the stars and enjoy some great local theater.
ICA Boston Thanks to the Highland Street Foundation, this Friday (August 5th) Boston’s premiere contemporary art museum is free to the public as part of their FREE FUN FRIDAYS series. Be sure to check out their “The Record: Contemporary Art & Vinyl” exhibit. For a small cover charge after taking in the exhibit you can partake in their waterfont dance party “DJs on the harbor: Classic DJ Throwdown”.
Of course there are more options such as First Fridays Open Studios, Boston Guerilla Queer Bar which will be overtaking a straight bar in the theater district this month, or joining guys for a drink at Fritz Bar in the South End to watch the Red Sox kick off a hometown series against the Yankees.

Bostonians: Amy & Nick A.K.A. Karmincovers

Amy and Nick are originally from Boston (hence several videos with Nick wearing a Red Sox cap). Check out Amy’s vocal / rapping skills at the 1:20 point in the video. I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I watched this.

I believe they now live in L.A., and I wanted to give them a shout out. I believe they also have some original songs on their Youtube channel despite the “Covers” name, Karmin Covers Youtube channel.

Weekend in NYC

On Friday morning I’ll be joined by my good friend, Paul, and we will hop on Acela to head into NYC for a couple nights of fun. We don’t really have any plans other than arrival and departure times and where we’ll be crashing.

Past preferences have led me to book hotel rooms in the West Village, Tribeca and SoHo. I’m simply not a fan of the crush of tourists and inhuman scale of Midtown; not to mention its where I have to stay for work. For this visit I booked a stay at the Strand Hotel. Located in the “heart of the fashion district” (that bit I stole from their website), the hotel is pretty convenient at 33 West 37th Street between the Avenue of the Americas and 5th Avenue.
The hotel has a roofdeck lounge that also looks very appealing called appropriately enough “Top of the Strand”. I’m looking forward to some early evening cocktails there before heading out. We’ll see what this little adventure brings us. Neither Paul nor I are all that NYC-savvy and on past trips we’ve ended up mostly walking around aimlessly. Should you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment.

Civility

At the risk of sounding like a curmudgeon, I wanted to ask what has happened to people treating each other with civility?

ci·vil·i·ty/səˈvilitē/Noun

1. Formal politeness and courtesy in behavior or speech.
2. Polite remarks used in formal conversation.

I ask the question, because I hear a lot of people talk about this all the time, but its always in context of someone else; never themselves acting poorly. So I’m going to put it out there and say although I try to be a good guy, I must somehow be contributing to this phenomenon and I’m going to make a concerted effort to be more civil. I’m also going to try and be less judgmental of others who may be having a bad day or tough time and have forgotten the usual “Please” or “Thank you“.

These common courtesies include things as small as smiling at someone you make eye contact with or responding with a “Good Morning“. It includes things like opening doors for others and saying the customary “please” and “thank you“. However, this is by no means an exhaustive list nor are these rules temporarily suspended when you find yourself at an airport or jostling in line with your groceries.

One may assume that my motivation for this post was due to witnessing some bad behavior or perhaps as a mea culpa, but its been something I’ve been thinking about for quite awhile. I’d refrained because I didn’t want to come across as lecturing or sounding like a grumpy old man. Its for that reason too that I’m owning up to the problems I see in my community. Whether I think I contribute to this problem or am doing my best to change such bad behavior is irrelevant. As a member of my community – I have to own up to the problems I see around me and do my best to fix them. So I suppose, I’m saying to anyone who happens to read this, first do you agree and if you do – what are you going to do to try and reverse this phenomenon?

Matt Damon defends teachers

Matt Damon proves once again that he’s not only a great actor (and damn sexy) but someone who is articulate and quick on his feet. Have you seen this 1min. clip where Matt Damon sticks up for teachers and the teaching profession?

There is foul language so turn down the volume if you are watching this in the office or if children are near.

Men’s Warehouse: 2011 National Suit Drive in Boston

Last week I wrote about Men’s Warehouse charity suit drive which comes to Boston, Tuesday, August 2nd. The event is certain to get your attention if you are near any of the locations listed below since gorgeous male models will be strutting around in their boxers to raise awareness of the Suit Drive.

There is more information about this great charity which is designed to help men prepare for a more successful future by giving them a suit so they can make a favorable impression for interviews and when starting a professional job. Link here for more information.

6:00am – 10:00am: Corner of Broad Street & State Street
6:00am – 10:00am: Corner of Dartmouth Street & St. James Avenue
6:30am – 10:00am: Corner of Market Street & Merrimac Street
10:30am – 2:30pm: Men’s Wearhouse store; 406 Boylston Street

To paraphrase the Men’s Warehouse commercials… I can guarantee you’ll like the way these guys look.

Facebook games – huh?

I joined FB earlier this year, because I want my blog posts to be visible there, although it results in so little traffic as compared to Twitter I have to wonder if I’ve set it up all wrong. There are so many things about FB that leave me scratching my head wondering “huh?”

My question of the week regarding FB is regarding the game requests I’ve noticed but ignored in my left margin. I now have 10 game requests. Do you use the games feature? Is it like playing online scrabble or something? Just so you know, I prefer my games to involve drinks do they have such games on FB?

Men of Twitter

As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome.  If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter. Francois2 – (Marlon G) lives in Montreal and is gay and single according to his profile so for anyone looking for l’amour in Montreal get yourself over to McGill University where he spends much of his time completing his Masters degree. Enlarge the picture and check out his eyes. He’s so damn handsome.
JaredJEdwards – Originally from Vegas, this sexy guy now calls Southern California home and based on his handsome looks and flirtatious tweets, I’m convinced he is ‘California Dreaming’. He’s certainly dreamy enough with his playful demeanor and friendly personality.

NoveliEricArvin – A.K.A. Eric Arvin is a writer and published author, who I first started following through his blog. He is an easy going guy who calls the midwest his home and who spends much of his time working on books. I think guys who write are sexy and Eric’s looks only add to his appeal.

My nephew Jack

On Sunday I was tweeting quite a bit about my niece Abby (age 2) and my nephews’ Austin (age 5) and Jack (age 7) who spent the day with us and stayed for a sleep over. The video below is of Jack when he was two years old singing along to Alicia Keys. I recognize that I’m biased, but he is damn cute.

Zipcar Low-Car Diet: Week 1

Monday, August 1st signals the start of the second week of the Zipcar low-car diet program. The intention of the program is to encourage people to use alternative forms of transportation both to live a healthier life and reduce our dependency on our cars. I wrote a bit about the program last week in my post, Zipcar low-car diet 2011. You can also find out more by visiting, www.zipcar.com/lowcardiet.

This past week Sergio and I have forgone our car, which ironically is in the shop. For the most part we’ve relied on our bicycles and walking to get from point-A to point-B. I have not used a single taxi cab or driven even a .1 of a mile this first week, which I’m fairly certain is a first for me.
How have we modified our lifestyle to accommodate the low-car diet? We’ve increased the amount we walk and use our bicycles much more. For example Sergio has used his bike to get to and from the college he teaches. I’m rather proud of him for being such a good sport and doing this since I never consulted him about participating in the Zipcar program. I may have caused irreversible harm to our local economy by forsaking taxi cabs. I’m not sure if there has been a solid week since moving to Boston in the late 90s that I have not used a car. All I can say to Boston taxi drivers is I’m sorry. However, I have to admit – I don’t mind the walking (even when its late after a fun night out at the bars).

Restaurant Review: Pigalle Boston

Pigalleis conveniently located just blocks from the Boston Common and near where the Theater District and Bay Village meet. This weekend’s menu offers patrons the choice of a 3-course prix fixe menu for $40.00 or ordering a la carte. Dining prix fixe is the more economical choice with starters ranging from $14-$23 and main dishes ranging from $29-$44.

The staff is a bit formal but very helpful and the space is comfortable with ample sized tables and seats mixed with cozy banquettes all dimly lit with bossa nova playing in the background creating for a rather romantic setting.

Food was creatively prepared and delicious; exactly what I would expect from a French restaurant with entrees in this range. I started with gazpacho that was served in a teapot and poured into my bowl it came plated with grilled calamari, cherry tomatoes, avocado and basil infused oil. Sergio opted for the prix fixe and started with an arugula salad that exploded with flavor between the fingerling potato crisps, and fried (OMG!!) goat cheese croutons.I ordered the baked sole with potato gnocchi stuffed with horseradish potato on a bed of sautéed spinach and red onion with caper and buerre blanc.Sergio had a mushroom risotto with root vegetables and topped with pea tendrils. Although both meals were very flavorful, I think my meal was better. It was also one of the more creative I’ve had in a long time. We finished our dinner sharing Sergio’s dessert, vanilla bean crème brulee which was as consistently delicious as the rest of the food. Dinner is going to put a dent in your wallet, but I’ll come back again.             Pigalle is located at 75 Charles Street South (617) 423-4944                 Reservations strongly recommended.
