Boston Globe’s scathing article about the Seaport

The Seaport is comprised of approximately 1,000 acres and for most of the second half of the 20th century the land was overlooked and neglected. But for the past 10-15 years Boston’s newest neighborhood has transformed into a second financial district and home for million dollar glass condos.

While everyone is happy to see the city revitalize prime real estate, The Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team took a closer look at the neighborhood and shared some of their findings in this article, A brand new Boston, even whiter than the old. The Spotlight Team found that this neighborhood, is really only for the white and affluent (89% white and only 3% black). The Seaport may as well be a gated community in Alabama for all the racial diversity you’ll find there.

While I understand that developers can make far more money selling $2million condos or building office buildings, The Globe team reminds us that more than $18 billion of public funding was used to transform this land so it seems like Boston should be able to do better in making space for more of its population and creating a neighborhood that is more racially and economically diverse.

The Seaport’s story is still unfolding and there is much more development that will happen over the next decade. I hope that excellent reporting like this article in The Boston Globe will get the attention of Mayor Marty Walsh, our City Council and Massport so they can work to reconcile this and insist on development that will make the Seaport a more diverse neighborhood.

Sam Adams tap room opens in JP

Photo from Samuel Adams website

Hey beer lovers, Samuel Adams beautiful brewery has just opened a tap room that will serve beer Monday through Saturday from 11AM to 8PM. And each Wednesday the tap room will host “Flight Night” when Sam Adams brewers will hand select four of their favorite beers from the brewery for you to taste.

The Samuel Adams brewery can be a little off the beaten path for people who visit Boston and the city certainly has no shortage of breweries to enjoy, but I love the historic mill that Samuel Adams calls home. If you love beer it really is worth visiting the brewery in Jamaica Plain. If you’ve never been take a tour then enjoy a few pints in their new tap room.

Dr. Stephen Boswell resigns from Fenway Health over mishandling of sexual harassment complaints

Sexual Harassment, Dr. Stephen Boswell, Dr. Harvey MakadonDr. Stephen Boswell has been the chief executive of Fenway Health since 1997 and under his leadership he has turned Fenway Health into one of the nation’s leading LGBTQ health centers, with a $100 million budget that employs about 500 people and serves 29,500 patients annually.

However, his mishandling of sexual harassment complaints forced Fenway Health’s Board to ask for Dr. Boswell to resign this weekend. In his place M. Jane Powers, Fenway’s director of behavioral health and the only woman in senior management has been appointed as an interim chief, while a search is conducted for a permanent replacement.

Criticism of Boswell’s handling of sexual harassment complaints that centered around Dr. Harvey Makakon came to light recently when it was learned that he did not heed the advice of legal council which recommended firing Dr. Makadon, after conducting a thorough investigation into the allegations made by staff. According to The Boston Globe, Boswell also failed to inform Fenway Health’s Board about the allegations (including a$75,000 settlement). You can read the full story in The Boston Globe here.

Massage at étant makes for a great holiday gift

south end spaétant is a neighborhood spa that has been in the South End since 1998, and I recently reviewed the spa when I took my father there for a 30-minute aromatherapy hand and foot massage for the two of us (you can read all about it here). As I said in my review, although 30-minute massage isn’t cheap, it is a more affordable option than a full body massage, making it a great treat if you’re on a budget. However, for those who are looking for more pampering étant offers an array of massage therapies in addition to facials, waxing, etc… On this particular trip I opted for a 1-hour Swedish Full Body Aromatherapy Massage ($120/60-minutes or $160/90-minutes).

A massage makes for a great gift for that hard to buy guy

There is something wonderfully relaxing about walking into a spa. The entire mood inside seems light years away from the hustle and bustle happening outside its doors and walking into étant is no exception. Jeanne greeted me with a smile as I walked up to the reception desk and offered me some water while I waited. A few minutes later my massage therapist, John Koran, walked in, introduced himself and guided me to the room for my massage. In less than 10-minutes I was on the massage table. With each knot that John worked out of my shoulders and back I started to relax more and more until I realized I had dozed off (something I tend to do off and on throughout any good massage I receive).

It is hard to describe how good I feel, mind, body and soul after a quality massage. If you’ve never had a massage I’d really encourage you to try it; and if it has been a while use the holiday season as an excuse to pamper yourself. étant provides consistently quality service and has a professional staff. My only critique is that I wish they had larger facilities that included saunas, lockers and showers for after a massage, but check it out and decide for yourself. étant is located at 524 Tremont Street in the South End and online at etant.com.

Boston’s Santa Speedo Run is Saturday, Dec. 9th

If you find yourself in Back Bay tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon you may want to head over to Boylston Street to see the 18th annual SSR (Santa Speedo Run). Scheduled to take place at 1PM, runners will line up at the intersection of Boylston and Gloucester Street (in front of the Hynes).

This annual tradition which has inspired more than a dozen similar runs in cities through out North America and Europe starts outside of Lir at 903 Boylston Street. Come down to check out all the activity. After a slight warm up the middle of this week it looks like tomorrow’s weather could be quite chilly so the runners can use all the support they can get.

Furry Friday

Furry FridaySince Boston’s Santa Speedo Run is tomorrow, I thought I’d inject this photo from a run a couple of years ago. When this photo was taken they had yet to run but were working up the liquid courage to run through the freezing streets of Boston for the 1 mile charity run.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

This time of year is filled with songs
That through the world are heard.
And this classic holiday melody
Is titled with just two words.

The first syllable of Word #1
Is a sound you might make when down.
The second syllable of this word
Might come from a cotton gown.

The second word can be found
On a board with sixty-four squares.
Four of these appear at the start
And all of them look like mares.
