Restaurant review: Ruka Boston

Godfrey HotelWhat happens when you combine Peruvian, Japanese and Chinese cuisine? You end up with a unique dining option in Downtown Crossing called Ruka.

The chic restaurant in Boston’s trendy Godfrey Hotel, has been a hot spot ever since it opened in early December last year. Ruka definitely has it’s own vibe. The overly embellished Asian-inspired decor is too polished to be confused with a Chinatown restaurant and the energy still evident when we left around 11:30 on a Tuesday night is not characteristic of a typical restaurant in Boston and is a testament to how much this part of Boston has changed with more residents now calling Downtown Crossing home than I can ever remember.

The small plates menu is heavily influenced by Japanese-Peruvian cuisine referred to as nikkei; as well as Chinese cuisine and some wonderful sushi options. If I have a complaint about Ruka it would be that the menu can be confusing and there is no telling which options are so small you’re better off skipping (like the blackened octopus – shown below).

BLACKENED OCTOPUS $13

While I thoroughly enjoyed the blackened octopus served with harissa mayo, sesame bbq and  ginger slaw, it was so small that the restaurant should either consider doubling the portion or removing it from the menu IMHO.

Fortunately, what followed were reasonable portions for sharing. The Chao Shou Pork wontons served in chile oil, black vinegar, cilantro and topped with crispy sweet potato crisps was both delicious and satisfying. Although picking up the slippery wontons with chop sticks proved to be too difficult for me, and I eventually succumbed to using a fork for this plate.

CHAO SHOU PORK WONTONS $17

At the same time that we received the octopus and wontons our very capable server brought over the plancha broccoli served with a curry and spicy peanuts (which btw were not spicy at all) and topped with broccoli stem fritters that added a nice texture to a satisfying plate.

PLANCHA BROCCOLI $14

Our final plate was the Acevichado, which according to their menu is described as  their daily cerviche served with leche de tigre, pickled cucumber and sweet potato. This was one of the most satisfying plates both in presentation and taste and went remarkably well with the Sauvignon Blanc I had ordered with dinner.

ACEVICHADO $20

If you’ve been to Ruka Boston, I’d love to hear your thoughts about the space and the food you tried. If you’ve not visited this unique restaurant, check it out and then get back to me with your thoughts.

I really enjoyed myself and will definitely be back again to try more plates.

Tom of Finland opens in Boston today

gay film, gay cinema, independent filmThe critically acclaimed biopic, Tom of Finland, which opened earlier this year in select cities in the United States finally opens in Boston today. I was able to see the film last week at Emerson College through their Bright Lights series, and I really enjoyed it.

The film which opens near the conclusion of WWII in Finland runs for nearly two hours and chronicles the life of Touko Laaksonen, the artist who created Tom of Finland.  The movie was directed by award-winning filmmaker Dome Karukoski. He does an excellent job sharing the life and work of Laaksonen.

A “Boston Release” page has been created on Facebook to make it easier to get tickets to one of the screenings for the opening weekend at the Kendall Cinema.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

Winter is nearly upon us
And the frost is beginning to show.
Santa has eight reindeer
That he’d like you to get to know.

This reindeer’s name begins with
A brand that helps your cold.
The end of the name is a place
To rest for just a few gold.

Axel Axgil, Eigil Axgil

Shown above are Axel Axgil and Eigil Axgil, the world’s first couple to obtain a “registered partnership”. The photo shows them just after the ceremony, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Oct 1, 1989, following Denmark’s legalization of same-sex partnership registration in 1989, a landmark legislation which they were instrumental in bringing about. They adopted the shared surname, Axgil, a combination of their given names, as an expression of their commitment. The images are from buddybuddy.com blog.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Brasiliero, Brazilian, handsome, hunk

Rodrigo Marim is from Sao Paulo Brazil and is relatively unknown here in the US but he is a Brazilian pop star who likes to post videos and pictures regularly on Instagram. I recently started following his account when I saw photos of him in and around Boston on a recent visit here and to NYC.

I know relatively little about this 20-something pop star who has beautiful eyes and likes to post images of his travels, working out and singing. Check out the Instagram video he posted on his account just a few weeks ago.

USA Today’s stunning rebuke of President Trump

The USA Today editorial board  (not exactly known for being particularly political) published a stunning rebuke of President Trump last night while the Alabama special election was going on.

Below is an excerpt of the editorial which appears to have been motivated by a number of issues but clearly were moved to comment after President Trump attacked U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.

With his latest tweet, clearly implying that a United States senator would trade sexual favors for campaign cash, President Trump has shown he is not fit for office. Rock bottom is no impediment for a president who can always find room for a new low… The nation doesn’t seek nor expect perfect presidents, and some have certainly been deeply flawed. But a president who shows such disrespect for the truth, for ethics, for the basic duties of the job and for decency toward others fails at the very essence of what has always made America great.

You can read the full editorial: Will Trump’s lows ever hit rock bottom?

Call Me By Your Name opens in Boston, Dec. 22nd

A gay-themed movie that I’ve been raving about lately (read my movie review here) will finally open in Boston on Friday, December 22nd at The Kendall and Loews Theater. The film has been picking up accolades nearly everywhere and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Oscar nominations.

Boston Gay Men’s Movie Group has arranged for a meet up event at the Kendall Cinema to see a matinee showing on Saturday, December 23rd. If you want to learn more visit the meetup page here: Boston Gay Men’s Movie Group.

The story is based on a book by the same name written by by Andre Aciman. If interested you can read my book review here.
