Goodbye 2016

2017, New YearA lot has been said about how crappy 2016 was and how many are looking forward to putting this year behind us, but upon further reflection I realized that despite some high profile losses – chief among them for me Prince & George Michael and other horrible events in the world – I’ve had a wonderful year.

I’m thankful for the time spent with my family and friends, the new friends Sergio and I made along the way this year and some really wonderful events / happenings including but not limited to the following:

Family

Caitlin was born on July 26 and Summer was born on March 18

I’m an uncle six times over now that I have Summer and Caitlin in my life. Although Caitlin (above left) is as big – if not bigger, Summer (above right) is actually four months older.  The photo was taken this fall when  Caitlin was about 4 months old and Summer was 8 months old.

Father, family

Mom and Dad both celebrated milestone birthdays in good health

My parents celebrated really big birthdays with friends and family this year. They both remain in good health and with their new home in Portsmouth, NH I hope I will be able to see more of them in 2017.

Sintra, Portugal

We had a blast visiting Portugal. Here we are in Sintra – an easy day trip from Lisbon.

Sergio and I took two international trips this year, visiting Portugal for the first time this past September (FYI – we loved it) and returning to family in Brazil in November / December. In addition to those trips I was able to visit friends in the following cities: Austin, TX in March; San Francisco and New York City. Sergio and I also escaped what turned out to be an incredibly mild winter by spending several days in San Juan, P.R. in February.

There is more to be thankful for as well including my aunt’s fight with cancer, a new job for my brother-in-law, a growing business for my other brother-in-law, we met several special people this year who we are lucky to have as friends and lest I forget, while I’m sad to see Obama leave office he concluded his 8 years in office in 2016 with a level of class and grace that I think will be left wanting in the years to come.

I wish and hope everyone has as wonderful a 2017 as Sergio and I had in 2016.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, shirtless manEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: A blind beggar had a brother who died. What relation was the blind beggar to the brother who died? BTW, “Brother” is not the answer.

The Underwear Expert shares NYE traditions from around the world

Underwear traditions for New Year's Eve, NYEI posted this last year but thought it worth reposting again. The Underwear Expert Blog asked their handsome style report, Jared North, to try on a variety of underwear types and colors based on traditions from different countries. Most of these traditions are meant to bring success, health or a better love life in the New Year.  Which tradition will you be following when you slip on your underwear Saturday night?

Why so many gay bars are closing

Show Tune Tuesday @dbarOn Christmas Eve The Economist published “Gay bars are under threat but not from the obvious attackers“. Although Boston is not mentioned, the transformation of our city’s traditional gay neighborhood, The South End, from a gritty cityscape into a trendy, upscale place young married couples and retirees are now choosing to live highlights one of the many challenges facing gay bars.

What constitutes a gay bar and what is the fate of these spaces remains to be seen. There have been times when I’ve been in “gay bars” that are so overrun by heterosexual couples and or packs of single women that I’m hard pressed to think of it as a ‘gay bar’.  Club Cafe in Boston, The Boatslip Tea Dances in Provincetown and Mainestreet in Ogunquit are all good examples.

drink, cocktail, boston, bar, nightlifeThe Economist asserts that where there is growing acceptance of the LGBTQ community, bars are more likely to be mixed or the LGBTQ community may feel less of a need to be a patron at a designated “gay” bar. It also suggests that the advent of “dating” apps has added another challenge, but I think it is mostly what I think of as a gay diaspora that poses the most significant problem for gay bars. As cities lose traditional gay enclaves, all sorts of businesses that cater to the LGBTQ community suffer. An early casualty to this was the gay bookstore followed by sex shops and gay gyms.

In my opinion bars have held out longer because even after many gay men move away from a traditional ‘gay neighborhood’ they return at night for dinner or drinks. However, I think the impact of losing a gay neighborhood means the long term prospects for many gay bars is grim. I don’t necessarily think Boston will lose all its gay bars but the density and numbers of gay bars has been severely cut over the past two decades since the South End migration started.

Massachusetts will be home to nation’s largest medical marijuana facility

Yes on 4, legalize pot in MassachusettsThis past November Massachusetts residents voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use. Earlier this month Denver-based medical marijuana facility developer AmeriCann announced plans to build America’s largest medical marijuana facility in the country in Freetown, Massachusetts, which when completed will be an astonishing 1 million square feet.

The CEO of AmeriCann, Tim Keogh said he wants to make the Massachusetts Medical Cannibis Center “the place in the northeast U.S. for the creation of a wide variety of exciting new advanced products for medical cannabis patients.”

Despite the ongoing protestations of our Governor, Boston’s Mayor and our State A.G., economic opportunity appears to be the result of the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana. It would be great if marijuana medical research could be done here. I would think it would benefit from the world class medical research community that already calls Massachusetts home.

I’m sure Freetown and the surrounding communities will also benefit tremendously from the construction jobs this will create, the full time jobs the center will employ and the tax revenue it will generate for the town and state.  You can read the full article in the Boston Business Journal here.

George Michael dead at 53

george-michaelIt is so sad to write that it was reported earlier today that singer George Michael died at the age of 53. His publicist has said that he passed away while at home this afternoon.  Police say there were no suspicious circumstances.

George Michael had a string of infectious pop music hits that played a big part of my life. While I’ve not given him much thought recently, he holds a special place in my heart for all the memories his music has brought me over the years.

All I want for Christmas is You by Steve Grand

Steve Grand, ChristmasSteve Grand released this music video last Christmas and it is one of my favorite songs for the holiday. The video is also pretty easy on the eyes with Steve and Trevor canoodling through out.

Merry Christmas and thank you for stopping by to check out my blog.
