Nothing Gold Can Stay

Boston Public Garden

Source: Decodollop blog

Each October I post this poem on my blog. It is one of my favorite poems of all time and is by the famous 20th century New England poet, Robert Frost, and is entitled, Nothing gold can stay.

It is obvious that Frost was inspired by the fall foliage in New England when he wrote this poem back in 1923.

Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Gay and bisexual men make up the majority of new syphilis cases

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but a new report from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis have increased for a second year in a row to all-time highs, and unfortunately,  gay and bisexual men make up the majority of syphilis cases.Safe SexWhile STDs are preventable with safer sex measures and generally curable with antibiotics, the most alarming piece of news may be that the CDC says that antibiotic resistant STDs are becoming more prevalent.

You can read all about that from the World Health Organization which published their findings earlier this summer, Growing antibiotic resistance forces updates to recommended treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

Autumn in New England

New England foliage, SlobodanAlthough I’m always sad to say good bye to summer, the autumn in New England is really quite spectacular.

My friend Slobodan (shown above) posted these beautiful photos on his facebook page and was nice enough to let me share them. The pictures were taken this week in Maine.  For those of you who have visited northern New England in the fall you know just how vibrant these colors and landscapes are. New England foliageNew England foliageNew England foliage, fall foliageNew England foliage, fall foliageNew England foliage, fall foliageThank you Slobodan for sharing your beautiful photographs.

Head of the Charles Regatta is this weekend

HOCR, Head of the Charles RegattaThe Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into the world’s largest rowing competition that spans two days, drawing more than 11,000 athletes and 400,000 spectators. With the warmer weather from earlier this week all but gone, sadly none of the rowers will likely be shirtless like this guy. You’ll want to bundle up when you go out to cheer on the athletes who came to compete.

The organizers have created a great website that includes more information about the races, maps and FAQs. You can learn more by visiting the official HOCR website, www.hocr.org.

11th annual Northeastern underwear run is tonight

As tradition has it, Northeastern’s annual underwear run always falls on the Friday night of parent’s weekend so if you are out and about tonight in the Back Bay don’t be shocked if you see a crowd of several hundred (last year it was about a thousand) students running down Huntington Avenue and Boylston Street in their underwear tonight.

Canadian video tells America “We think you’re great”

I really like (and appreciate) this video made by Canadians that came out earlier this month, sending a positive message to Americans and explaining why they think America is a really great place.

Previous Vintage Gay Photos

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post?
