Friday night at Pi Alley will be bearlicious

Bear WeekThe Alley in Boston will be jammed packed with guys on Friday as men from around the world fly into Boston today so they can take the morning ferry to Provincetown for the start of Bear Week on Saturday morning.

If you’ve never been or if it has been a while, head over to Downtown Crossing and check out the scene at Pi Alley located at 14 Pi Alley (just off of Washington Street and about one block from the State Street T station). Just beware a line starts forming early so it doesn’t pay to show up fashionably late.

Will Massachusetts legalize marijuana

smoking weed, pot, 420Both Governor Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh have made it clear that they oppose legalizing marijuana. However, there is a push to ask voters if they would be interested in legalizing marijuana for recreational use on the 2016 ballot. According to a Boston Globe poll in 2014 more than half indicated they support complete legalization of marijuana in the state.

What could the state of MA do with an additional $70 million?

This is important because there are a lot of misconceptions about what legalizing marijuana might lead to. So it was interesting to see that one year after the state of Washington legalized the sale and use of marijuana none of the issues that Governor Baker and Mayor Walsh rail against have come true; moreover, Washington State’s data points echo those from Colorado – the first state to legalize recreational use of marijuana.

  • WA state earned more than $70 million in taxes from marijuana sales. Doubling the original marijuana tax revenue forecast of $36 million for the first year of sales (source: Washington State Liquor Board).
  • Marijuana usage by kids in Middle and High School did not increase over the past year in Washington State (source: HealthYouthSurvey).
  • Adults arrested for marijuana possession fell from 5,500 to 120 people freeing up local law enforcement agencies and the courts (source: drugpolicy.org).

So let’s stop our annoying Nancy Reagan “Just Say No” knee jerk reaction to all things related to pot.  The parochial attitude seems patronizing and out of step. Adults are using marijuana and the drug is not showing itself to be a gateway drug nor is crime running rampant in the states that have legalized it; actually quite the contrary has been found. The only surprising fact is how much money these states are making in tax revenues.

For those who didn’t know, Washington State passed two laws, legalizing gay marriage and marijuana.  The fact that gay marriage and marijuana were legalized on the same day makes perfect Biblical sense. Leviticus 20:13 says: “If a man lies with another man they should be  stoned“.  Apparently we just hadn’t interpreted it correctly before.

The Sinclair Movie Night series continues this week with The Goonies

The Sinclair Cambridge Movie NightThe Sinclair in Harvard Square has launched their first annual Summer Movie Night series.  The series started last month on June 9 with a showing of “Spaceballs”.

Later this week a screening of  1980s film“The Goonies” will take place on Wednesday, July 8 and “Dirty Dancing” will be shown on Saturday, August 11.  Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. Space is limited, so we recommend getting there early to snag a spot.  The Sinclair is located at 52 Church Street in Cambridge.

What has been won in the courts can be taken away: LGBT rights

Becky Wegner RommelWith the recent US Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, many feel elated but the fact remains a lot of Americans remain sympathetic to Becky Wegner Rommel who appears in the video below and while her rant is probably the very definition of manic and easy to giggle at while watching – let’s remember this woman votes.

Becky’s bat-shit crazy rant should serve as a reminder that the 2016 Presidential election remains even more important to our community.

What has been won in the courts can be undone, and if Becky and those sympathetic to her get their way that is what will happen.  That’s why I don’t find this video funny.  I find it frightening.

Fashion faux pas: Man bun

bad hairI have many daily reminders that I’m getting older.  But none probably remind me of this fact more often than the latest trend in men’s hair, the “man bun”.

Despite the fact that A-list male actors like Chris Hemsworth, Colin Ferrell and Bradley Cooper have all been seen sporting the “man bun”, I can’t bring myself to appreciate this latest trend for men.  I’m sure there are many hipsters and 20-somethings that will disagree, but I want to point out that hairstyles seem to be the most fickle of trends; going out of style nearly as quickly as they come into style.

Unlike bad hair trends of the past (for example when Andre Agassi tried to make the mullet popular in the 1990s), those hair styles are relegated to our memories and parents’ homes where those embarrassing photos still proudly hang on walls. For those strutting around with a man bun today, your photos are plastered all over sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.  I can assure you that friends and family will keep these photos and enjoy teasing you whenever and wherever the opportunity arises, showing new boyfriends / girlfriends and others how “trendy” you looked long after this trend passes.  Bad Hair
