Boston Pops fireworks spectacular
Boston is a ghost town – that is unless you are in the Back Bay and Beacon Hill in which case it seems like the city is bursting at the seams as final preparations are made for the annual Boston Pops fireworks spectacular. Earlier today Sergio and I visited the Hatch Shell and walked the Esplanade, and I was impressed by the incredible security and how efficient everything was operating.
If you want to see the fireworks but not go to the Esplanade, take the Red Line to Kendall Square and walk back to the Charles River. You will be able to listen to the music, while watching the fireworks explode over Back Bay’s skyline.

Have a great 4th of July
Many companies in the US are closing early for our Independence holiday that is officially on July 4th. For a second year in a row we are staying in Boston (no Ptown).
Sergio’s nephew will arrive later this evening to visit us before he flies back to Brazil. His visit may mean that we need to head toward all that craziness over by the Hatch Shell but I’m hoping we can camp out at a BBQ.
If you celebrate the holiday – enjoy the time away from work and weekend.
Furry Friday
Restaurant review: Carbone in Hell’s Kitchen
Carbone is a tiny unpretentious Italian restaurant located on a relatively quiet (is anyplace quiet in NYC) street in Hell’s Kitchen. This restaurant should not be confused with the swanky restaurant by the same name in Greenwich Village.
Carbone came to my attention while I was searching for places nearby and the 3.7 rating on Zomato seemed to make this a solid choice. Upon entering I was greeted by the owner who only goes by Alessandro and a friendly host who ushered me out to their tiny private back patio. Unfortunately dodgy weather brought me back inside to avoid rain, but the cozy vibe of the place made for a great first impression. This space is probably only 12′ at its widest point and the exposed brick wall gives the impression of a back alley (think Lady and the Tramp).
I ordered a glass of the Montepulicano, which was suggested by the waiter and proved to be much to my liking, followed by the Rollatine Di Melenzane. The eggplant rolls came with the mozzarella cheese still melting on to the plate. This proved to be my favorite part of the meal. The thinly sliced eggplant were overstuffed with ricotta cheese and the tomato sauce was sweet and delicious. I used the bread to get most of the excess sauce and ricotta that oozed out when I cut the pieces to eat.
With approximately one quarter of Carbone’s dinner menu dedicated to pizza, I opted to skip the main dishes and pastas and order the Pizza Italiano which is topped with cheese, arugula, fresh tomatoes and prosciutto. When served the cheese and prosciutto smelled wonderful but ultimately it disappointed because I thought the crust lacked flavor. Based on the rollatine and the many positive reviews of this restaurant I wonder if I made a mistake and should have ordered a pasta. One thing I do know is that Tavola, which is located around the corner is the better choice for pizza. However, the cozy vibe and very reasonable price point makes this a place worth considering; just be sure to stick to the pastas.
Carbone’s is located at 331 W. 38th Street between 8th & 9th Ave.

GLAD’s summer party in Ptown is July 25th
GLAD’S 34th Annual Summer Party
The Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders is a local non profit that has been helping the LGBT community here and around the country since it was first formed in 1978. In recent years GLAD’s Civil Rights Project Director, Mary Bonauto, has received much attention as a Marriage Equality advocate with significant rulings in cases like Goodridge v. Department of Public Health which made Massachusetts the first state in which same-sex couples could marry in 2004 and more recently arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court in the Obergefell v. Hodges case on April 28, 2015. A that case will determine if state bans against same-sex marriage are constitutional and considered one of the most important civil rights cases to come before the U.S. Supreme Court in modern history.
Show your support for the work GLAD is doing on behalf of marriage equality and other important civil liberties by joining them at their 34th Annual Summer Party.

Ptown gallery walk
While tens of thousands have descended upon Provincetown for Independence Week parties and celebrations, a weekly tradition worth checking out (if only to take a break from all the revelries) is the Ptown Friday Gallery Walk.
While many think of the East End when they think of Provincetown’s art galleries, don’t overlook West End galleries like the AMP Gallery at 148 Commercial St. where Keith Krisa’s exhibit opened and will run through Wednesday, July 8th.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Ptown offers a little bit of something for everyone. While visiting try something you may not normally do. You might be surprised by how much you enjoy perusing Provincetown’s art galleries.
