Dykes in Hell’s Kitchen

Gay HumorI always chuckle when I pass this sign in Hell’s Kitchen. I know it is juvenile but that shouldn’t be news to anyone who reads this blog regularly.

Restaurant review: Nizza Hell’s Kitchen

Nizza Hell's Kitchen NYCNizza is a cozy space located in NYC Hell’s Kitchen on Ninth Avenue.  The night I was there Nizza had a young crowd and nice energy that reminded me of some of my favorite brasseries – except Nizza’s menu is 100% Italian.  It probably didn’t hurt that bartender, Tom, was easy on the eyes, friendly and made excellent dinner suggestions.

Italian restaurant, Nizza NYCNizza’s menu is very approachable with pizzas, pastas and main dishes ranging from $13-$23.  I started dinner with Tom’s suggestion, eggplant involtini ($11.25). The dish comes with four thinly sliced roasted eggplant that are stuffed with ricotta and herbs.  It is shown above with focaccia bread and olive oil served with a generous dollop of ricotta. The eggplant was cooked perfectly and is something I would regularly order if I lived in the neighborhood.

Nizza Hell's Kitchen NYCI love spicy pizza so Tom suggested I try the “Piccante” ($14.75).  This pizza didn’t disappoint and the heat gave me an excuse to order a second glass of wine.  The pizza comes with tomato, spicy Italian sausage, roasted hot peppers, smoked mozzarella and fresh basil.   It was the roasted hot peppers that really added the heat so have them hold the peppers if you’d prefer something less spicy. A sure sign that I enjoyed the dinner was the self-induced food coma that followed from me over eating.

If out in Hell’s Kitchen and looking for a nice place to grab a bite that has good energy and is reasonably priced, I’d definitely suggest trying Nizza at 630 Ninth Avenue.

Meet the author: Marc Solomon

TWCTen years ago Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriage. And after the US Supreme Court’s landmark rulings in the summer of 2013 a tipping point had been reached; as of right now there are 32 states provide legal recognition and that number seems to be growing by the day.

Author and community organizer, Marc Solomon, who wrote, Winning Marriage: The Inside Story of How Same-Sex Couples Took on the Politicians and Pundits – and Won, has been invited by TWC to have a “Meet the Author”.

Obama’s support for Marriage Equality articulated

Marriage Equality, Same Sex MarriageAnyone surprised the LGBT community still largely supports President Obama?  He remains our single most powerful champion in this fight.

Halloween New Orleans: Descent

Bay Windows endorses Richard Tisei

Richard Tsei, Bay WindowsGay Republican, TIsei, endorsed by Bay Windows

Bay Windows, New England’s premiere newspaper for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community, has done something inconceivable – it has endorsed a Republican running for a U.S. Congressional seat.

Richard Tisei (R) is running for Massachusetts 6th Congressional District and as Bay Windows writes, “Tisei is a pro-choice, pro-gay, and qualified for congress. Oh, and he’s gay.”  That’s right America, Massachusetts is now ready to export, out & proud gay Republicans.  This will be maddening for conservative pundits like Limbaugh and Huckabee. Can you imagine them frothing at the mouth as they say things like “US Republican Congressman, Richard Tisei’s husband…”

More importantly Tisei’s presence could build bridges and help end the war his party has waged on the LGBT community since the 1980s.  I don’t mean to infer that electing Tisei will single-handidly change the Republican party’s homophobic attitude toward homosexuality but it certainly adds an interesting dynamic and guarantees Tsei a national platform to talk openly about LGBT concerns.  He isn’t afraid of challenging his party.  After all he boycotted his own party’s convention when Republicans in our state added language opposing marriage equality.  And you know what – he still beat there ass. I can’t wait for this showdown and wish Richard success at the ballot box on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Feeling down? LIFT yourself back up!

realm health and fitness tips from KyleWhen I have a couple busy weeks that don’t allow me to get my own workout in, I not only feel like something is missing, I feel a little down. This transfers into low energy, lack of focus and ultimately getting less things done and killing productivity.

A new study helps support the phenomenally positive effects exercise has on depression, specifically stress induced depression. This has been proven to work in cases where the subjects did not want to work out, but pushed through the exercise. This means that the physical demand placed on the body can not only make you physically stronger, but mentally too.
