David Pocock

David PocockEarlier this week David over at WickedGayBlog posted a series of photographs of this extremely handsome Australian rugby player, David Pocock.  In all fairness, David has posted this handsome jock before, but I wanted to give the post a shout out since you may be unaware of this very handsome heterosexual LGBT ally who recently made news when he told the media he would not marry until all Australian couples could legally marry.  Like what you see? Check out all the photos that David posted on WGB.

As they say in Australia, Good On Ya David Pocock.

2013 No pants subway ride (revisited)

No Pants Subway RideHard to believe that it was just three weekends ago that Sergio and I were jumping from one train to the next during Boston’s No Pants Subway Ride.  The video has proven popular and since I’m traveling this weekend I thought I’d dig this up to share again while I’m away.  For those who missed all the fun, perhaps you’ll consider joining us in 2014.

Enjoying the first full day here. The view above is from our second floor balcony which I find unbelievably serene. The weather this morning started out overcast with a few passing sprinkles, but the afternoon has been gorgeous. I’ll write more about the W Spa and Resort after I return home, but as you can see the property does not lack for beautiful views of the water.

Boston Chops in the South End

Boston Chops South EndRecently I chatted with the people over at Boston Chops.  Rumors of their opening still remain unconfirmed, but waitstaff has already started training so hopefully the wait is nearly over.  When the doors open, Boston Chops hours will be 4pm to 1am; serving dinner from 5pm to midnight – daily.  Boston Chops will also be open for  brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm, but I was told brunch will not be available immediately.

The menu is either not finished or when I spoke to them they wanted to keep the information private. I was told the menu focuses on allowing patrons options not often associate with steak houses. For example, you will be allowed to choose your cut of steak for their signature steak frites and you will be served unlimited fries.  While that sounds delicious, when I asked about prices I was told Boston Chops is an “urban steak bistro” with approachable prices. Huh? I have absolutely no idea what that means.  However, if Chef Coombs restaurant Deuxave in the Back Bay is any indication, main plates could range from  $31 to $39; let’s hope Coombs opts for a more affordable price point here in the South End so I can visit more often.

Patrons of the previous restaurants in this space will remember a very dramatic interior.  Boston Chops brings a completely different look and feel to the space, using dark woods, burgundy tones and heavy unfinished steel. The 30-seat bar and a large lighting fixture designed to look like chandeliers from Burgundy France will provide a sophisticated vibe.  Construction was still on-going when I wrote this post earlier in the week, but I have faith it will look beautiful and will be a fantastic (and welcome) addition to the neighborhood.

Flashback Friday

Boston waterfrontThe Boston Custom House was the only “sky scraper” in Boston in 194o.  The tower had been added in 1910 and stands just under 500′ tall. However, you can barely find the Boston Custom House from my photograph taken in the summer of 2012, but you’ll see it off to the right if you look carefully.

In 2009 I had a regular post called “Flashback Friday”, which I would share past images and memories of life in and around Boston.  After perusing Dirty Old Boston on Facebook I was inspired to revive this regular post.  For those not familiar with Boston, thank you for the indulgence.  For those who may have grown up in and around Boston, I hope you enjoy these posts as much as I like putting them together.  Apologies for the older posts which were done in 2009.  When I moved my blog to WordPress the formatting from my Blogspot address left a lot to be desired.

BosGuy brain teaser

RiddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle:   When you cook me, you discard my outside and cook my inside.   When you consume me, you eat my outside and throw away my inside.   What am I?

FOXY moves to Ramrod

Gay Nightlife BostonIt has been a while since I’ve written about FOXY night, which started in Cambridge on select Sunday nights at clubs in Central Square. The handsome DJs behind these fun evenings recently announced that FOXY is not only changing venues but also changing nights.

FOXY is now on the 1st Saturday at Ramrod Boston

Nathaniel Bluhm and Joseph ColbourneDJs Nathaniel Bluhm and Joseph Colbourne will be playing a heavy rotation of soul music when FOXY night moves to Ramrod this Saturday night.  According to the invite on Facebook, you can expect natural, friendly men in  T-shirts and tight blue jeans. Sounds tempting and a great alternative worth checking out.

Like the FOXY Action Group on Facebook for more information.

Living for Friday

Since I’m off to Puerto Rico tomorrow, I’m really fine living in the moment, but for all of you in Boston looking to do something on Friday, there is no shortage of fun ways to distract yourself. However, here are three suggestions.

CampusLast month I wrote about rumors that ManRay / Campus might reopen in Cambridge.  Adding credence to the rumor is the ManRay Reunion Party that takes place this Friday at Brighton Music Hall. The reunion will include live dancers, a fashion show, and photography displays among other fun activities.  You can buy tickets online here.

TWCIt also happens to be the first Friday of the month, which means The Welcoming Committee’s Guerrilla Queer Bar will be in effect. Link here to register so you can receive your update on what traditionally straight bar this group will take over this Friday night. This group gathers quite a large, fun crowd so arrive early so you won’t have to wait outside in a line.

SoWa Open MarketThe art studios at 450 Harrison Avenue will be open for First Fridays from 5-9. It is a great date night alternative to the movies or a bar and with so many good restaurants within just a few blocks, if you make a reservation now you can enjoy strolling through studios and participating galleries before grabbing a delicious dinner.

No matter what you do this Friday. I hope you have a great weekend.

MFA free tonight after 4pm

MFA BostonDid you know that the MFA Boston is open and free to the public each Wednesday, after 4pm?

If the holiday season put a dent in your wallet, this is a very affordable way to get out after work to meet with friends.  Note that the this will also be the last Wednesday before the Testino exhibit closes on Feb. 3rd.
