ManRay / Campus might reopen this summer
Rumors are swirling that the popular fetish / gay bar will re-open this summer not far from its original home in Cambridge. Cambridge Day reported the rumors earlier this week and the news was quickly picked up by Boston Restaurant Talk and the Boston Hospitality blog.
Cambridge Day reports in their post on January 8th, “Man Ray owner Don Holland never stopped trying to resurrect the famed Central Square nightclub. Under threat of losing his restaurant and alcohol license, he said Tuesday that he believed he’s succeeded. The location: Central Square’s former Blockbuster video, a 5,000-square-foot space at 541 Massachusetts Ave.”
I met my partner on one of the gay nights at ManRay (a fetish bar), which was called “Campus” on Thursdays and Saturdays when the crowd was mostly gay. I loved the whole layout with the lounge that had pool tables, the backroom dance floor which would play music from bands like Siouxsie and The Banshees, Depeche Mode and XTC and the main dance floor in the front where DJs would mix the latest pop and dance hits. I was so sad when I heard the bar closed because the landlord sold the property to be made into condos.
I’ll be keeping tabs on the nightclub’s website, www.manrayclub.com.
The Foodery
For nearly six months a food service called The Foodery has been in the Boston area, making and delivering restaurant quality meals that have locally sourced, organic ingredients.
I was unfamiliar with this new business founded by college friends turned entrepreneurs, John Bauer and Mike Speights, but I love their idea of making good, nutritious food more accessible and thought their business model was unique to Boston.
Their goal is to help people who want to eat healthy but don’t have the time, skill or inclination to make these kinds of meals. The business model is very straight forward, but all that convenience and the quality of the ingredients comes at a cost – approximately $24 per meal – so for those on a tight budget this is probably not feasible. However for professionals on the go who find themselves eating out at restaurants regularly this provides a slightly more affordable option and certainly more healthy with all meals not only nutritionally balanced but also capping out at 550 calories.

Majority opinion used by many at same sex marriages
An article in The Boston Globe yesterday mentioned that a particular excerpt from Massachusetts landmark decision in Goodridge vs. Department of Public Health continues to be a popular reading at same sex marriages all over the US.
After reading the article in the Boston Globe I can see why it has remained so popular with civil marriages for same sex partners. I’ve taken the text from the image above and added it below to make it easier for you to read.
“Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family… Because it fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life’s momentous acts of self-definition.”
– Chief Justice Marshall, November 2003Gay for Good
With the start of a new year, many make resolutions to “give-back” or to volunteer in the community so I wanted to nudge any of you who may have contemplated this but have yet to find the right opportunity by talking about Gay for Good (G4G).
G4G originally started in Los Angeles in 2008 and now there are chapters in Boston, Chicago, Orange County, Pittsburgh, San Diego and San Francisco. Check out one of these local chapters and get involved. You’ll not only help make your community a better place, but you’ll be able to meet like minded individuals in an organized social setting.
Color Commons opening
New American Public Art (NAPA) is hosting a free event that involves a temporary art installation specifically designed for interaction with the Light Blades on The Greenway (shown above).
On Thursday, NAPA will unveil a phone number allowing park users to text message the color they want to light up the Light Blades so be sure to bring your cell phone to the opening and participate in a texting battle to see the resulting light show as the Light Blades respond to a crowd of texts.
The event will take place on The Greenway in the Wharf District Parks (between Milk and State Street).
Diego Fazio photorealism
I stumbled upon this amazing drawing (you read that correctly) on BuzzFeed. Diego Fazio is a 22 year old self-taught artist living in Italy who began his career designing tattoos. He has perfected his photorealism technique over a period of several years to make his drawings appear as photographs. I would love to see an exhibit of his work here in Boston.
There are a few more of his works here, but note the site is in Italian.
Boston No Pants Subway Ride 2013
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that Boston’s No Pants Subway Ride was fast approaching. With more than 50 cities in North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Australia hosting similar rides on Sunday, January 13th you may want to check out the details (or at least hop on your local subway on Sunday afternoon). You can see if a city near you is participating by visiting the Improv Everywhere Global Page.
Last year Sergio and I had a superhero theme which proved to be popular. If you see me this year, definitely come up and say hello. We have traded in our superhero underoos for a different eye-catching theme for 2013. For those who are not in Boston, I’ll be pulling together photographs from the event and posting them here on my blog following the ride. You can watch my video from Boston’s 2012 No Pants Subway Ride here.
Temptation Tuesday
This week’s Temptation Tuesday features a Facebook buddy (Onesio – second from the left) in Brazil posing on Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro with friends. I thought they were definitely tempting.
Eles sao gostoso, sim ou nao? Saudades do Brasil.
Cell phone chicken
This image has been making the rounds on Facebook so I thought I’d share it. Planning on going to dinner with friends later this week? Perhaps you’d like to introduce them to what I’m now calling “Cell Phone Chicken”… Just like the childhood game played on bikes – the first to make a move is the chicken. The brilliant thing about this game is it need not just be played at a restaurant.
GPS: Getting People Stupid
While I can get easily turned around and reading a map can make me go cross-eyed, I can usually get myself from point A to point B. However, many of my friends and family would struggle to find their way out of a paper bag so I can appreciate how helpful mapping applications can be for people.
While I’m thankful to have these mapping apps, I’ve noticed that many (you know who you are) have become so reliant on them that they have either lost what little sense of direction they had or they suffer moments of extreme stupidity; hence my new acronym for GPS – Getting People Stupid.
I’ve had friends intending to drive to Portland, ME end up just outside Albany, NY (FYI – Albany is 3 hours west of Boston and Portland is 1+ hour northeast). Friends have missed the exit to their home. And I’ve had friends pass by shops they wanted to visit because they were directed to the same franchise further away. Why would one use a mapping app for well traveled / familiar journeys or get into their automobile for a road trip without even the faintest understanding of where they are driving or how long the trip might take?
I will admit these do make for good stories, but is asking someone to have self-awareness when driving too much to ask? Next time you feel the need to use your mapping app ask yourself this question: Do you know where you are going? If not, look at the mapping route before you get in the car or better yet, simply turn off the device and follow the road signs. I’m sure you’ll find your way – after all that is why we spend so much money putting those big signs up over the highway… think of them as pre-GPS mapping technology.
Abdominal work out from the 80s
Blogger, Ajax in the City posted this abdominal work out video from the 80’s on his blog. I keep expecting Olivia Newton John to come walking out singing “Physical”. The entire clip is totally ridiculous, but I couldn’t help but watch it all the way through. I should ask my personal trainer for his thoughts. 😉
Southie Rules
The A&E network will roll-out a new reality show later this month that supposedly shows viewers “real life” in Southie; one of Boston’s working class, Irish enclaves that in recent years has seen an influx of young professionals.
I have no doubt many in the area will beam with pride because a cable network channel will broadcast what I assume will be stereotypical “characters” to scripted dramas manufactured more for ratings than any concern for reality. Funny, I thought shows like Real Housewives and Jersey Shore were waning in popularity – perhaps not.
My lack of interest in this latest un-reality program turned to disdain when I saw The Boston Globe had listed a series of promo ads from A&E. One of the promos meant to be a put-down to NYC “Nobody tells us how big our soda should be” sounds as if it came directly from a NYC advertising agency. Anyone who has lived their life in Southie will tell you Soda, Pop, Coke… is all called one thing in Boston — Tonic. Get your colloquialisms correct or “Póg Mo Thón”.
