The Welcoming Committee’s Sunday River weekend

TWC, The Welcoming CommitteeEven though I can’t bear the thought of winter, it is time to recognize that summer is over and the Autumn is quickly passing. As if that wasn’t obvious enough, The Welcoming Committee has opened early registration for their annual White Out Weekend (WOW) that will take place at Sunday River.

The weekend package includes 2-nights at the Sunday River Grand Summit Hotel as well as transportation between Boston and Sunday River. Early registration prices start at $299. More details are available are available, here.

Why I think America is getting better with age

rural-americaOne of the virtues of Donald Trump’s campaign is that it has brought the spotlight to a group of Americans who have been ignored by politicians.

This group of disenfranchised, who mostly live in rural America feel that the country is not as great as it once was, but the reason I’m writing this post is to point out that equally large parts of the United States have flourished over the past eight years.  For example, my partner, Sergio, went from being unemployed to starting his own business; this last quarter proved to be his busiest ever. I too have seen my salary rise and our future seems more sure footed and stable than it did eight years ago.  More impressively, the United States emerged from a global economic slowdown faster than most of the world. Those points don’t diminish the needs or the worries of those left disaffected, but it is worth noting.

Supreme court ruling on birth controlIn addition to the economic news, something else has happened over the past eight years that transcends economics. We had the first sitting President who said gay and lesbians deserved to be treated equally; essentially expanding the civil rights movement beyond race and gender. At the same time a light was shed on racial inequalities in a way that it had not previously. Do you think that the Black Lives Matter movement would have the same impact if we didn’t have a sitting Black President? I don’t take this to be a coincidence and should Hillary Clinton be elected, one should expect (and hope) that issues surrounding women’s rights will enjoy similar prominence.

Perhaps it is for these reasons that I think America is already pretty great and more importantly getting better with each passing year.

Sunday is the last South End / SOWA market of the season

South End and SOWA Open Market Map 2It seems like it was just a few weeks ago that I was writing that the South End and SoWa Open Markets were opening for the season, but the reality is it has been six months and tomorrow, Sunday, October 30th marks the last market of the season. Both markets have continued to thrive and had a stellar year.

South End Open Market and the SOWA Market are separated by 3 blocks and are open from 10 AM – 4PM. Come over to the neighborhood and check them out before they close up for the season.

Mazon Lighting Design

mazon-lighting-designEarlier this week I took a day off from my day job to join Sergio as an honorary employee of his company, Mazon Lighting Design, while a lighting manufacturing conference came to Boston. The show, Boston Lights, has sentimental meaning for Sergio because he conceived and created it back in 2010 (BTW, Sergio is the most amazing lighting geek you’ll ever meet).

For those who don’t know, Sergio is a lighting designer who teaches lighting design at several universities in Boston and started a design company several years ago. Truth be told, I’m quite proud of him. He follows in the footsteps of my mother and several of her siblings as well as my grandfather who all started successful small businesses. What can I say? I’m attracted to self-starters.

Anyway, the day spent as an employee of Mazon Lighting Design was a lot of fun and I learned a little bit about lighting along the way. On the off chance you may be remodeling, building a new home or have some questions about lighting, give Sergio a call. Not only is he handsome, but he also knows more about lighting than you could ever possibly imagine.

The twelve hours of murder, mayhem, and masks on 35mm film starts at the witching hour on Saturday, October 29th with a double feature of the late Wes Craven’s meta-slashers Scream and Scream 2!

Tonight is opening night for Boston Ballet’s, Le Corsaire

The 2016/2017 Boston Ballet season opens tonight with “Le Corsaire”, which is loosely based on Byron’s poem “The Corsair“, a love story that revolves around a slave girl and the two men who love her, a Turkish pasha and a pirate. You can read the full synopsis of the three act ballet here.

The Boston Ballet first performed this ballet in 1997 as “The Pirate”, but  artistic director, Mikko Nissinen, opted for a different version this time. Inspired by the Czech choreographer Liska production for the Bavarian State Opera Ballet and the stunning sets and costumes, “Le Corsaire” promises to be a dramatic and beautiful ballet. I look forward to enjoying tonight’s performance and suggest you purchase tickets now before the Boston Ballet production sells out.
