Boston Gay Men’s book club meets Monday, July 18th

Boston Gay Men's Book ClubBefore you head out for the long holiday weekend to celebrate July 4th, I wanted to let you know that Boston’s Gay Men’s Book Club will be meeting in a few weeks on Monday, July 18th at the Trident Booksellers and Cafe to discuss The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle.  If you are looking for some funny reading over the holiday, check out this month’s book by Federle.

About the Book: Quinn Roberts is a sixteen-year-old smart aleck and Hollywood hopeful whose only worry used to be writing convincing dialogue for the movies he made with his sister Annabeth. Of course, that was all before—before Quinn stopped going to school, before his mom started sleeping on the sofa…and before the car accident that changed everything.

Enter: Geoff, Quinn’s best friend who drags Quinn to his first college party, where instead of nursing his pain, he meets a guy— a hot guy—and falls, hard. What follows is an upside-down week in which Quinn begins imagining his future as a screenplay that might actually have a happily-ever-after ending—if, that is, he can finally step back into the starring role of his own life story.

You may purchase the book online but go out and support an independent bookseller, read the book and RSVP to join the group next month.

Why do we put stupid people on TV?

A reader shared that Rep. Bachmann never said the quote attributed to her above which on the one hand makes me feel much better and on the other makes me think – she strikes me as such an idiot that the quote seemed believable.

I try to keep my political ramblings to a minimum on this blog but this quote, if true, really bothers me. I may not like the Republican Party but there are a lot of intelligent people who I can have intelligent discourse with over policy and social issues who are Republicans, but they seem to be fewer and fewer each year.

Starting in the 2000 Republican Primary Presidential campaign, it seems like there was a move by some candidates to depict themselves as your average Joe. Since then, it seems like the Republican Party has increasingly embrace candidates who sound stupid. Why is there such an aversion to education and sounding intelligent? I can appreciate nobody likes a snob but the village idiot isn’t exactly a role model and that seems to be far more common these days.

HBO’s Looking

LGBT, GLBT, drama

Murray Bartlett, Lauren Weedman, Raúl Castillo, Jonathan Groff, and Frankie J. Alvarez in Looking: The Movie (2016)

One month from today on Saturday, July 23rd HBO will air a long anticipated finale to the short lived gay drama, Looking.

In the movie trailer, Patrick returns to San Francisco to attend a friend’s wedding after having moved away. When he sees his former boyfriends old feelings emerge and the closure he thought he had now doesn’t seem so clear. Earlier this week HBO released the trailer, and it made the rounds on many gay blogs, but if you’ve yet to see it, check it out here.

More information on the series here, www.hbo.com/looking.

Oscar Wilde with his lover Sir Alfred Douglas circa 1893 before their trial

This week’s post features one of my favorite writers of all time, Oscar Wilde, with his lover, Sir Alfred Douglas before Oscar was imprisoned for “gross indecency”. Whatever our issues are today, we have it far easier than those who came before us, and I always make it a point to remind myself how lucky I am.
