How many different ways can they spin butter, eggs, and refined sugar? The possibilities are endless and calories limitless, unless you take the initiative to control your appetite and be aware of your body and it’s realistic needs. Now the goal here is to not get swept away in nostalgic emotional eating – it is to realize what your body’s nutritional needs are. Odds are you won’t find a cupcake with 50 grams of processed sugar just sitting in the middle of nature, and we wonder why diabetes is a growing problem in America.
“Sweet is the first taste humans prefer from birth” according to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a dietitian and American Dietetic Association spokeswoman. Carbohydrates also make us feel good, releasing serotonin and rewarding us for the choice; the taste of sugar alone releases endorphins and relaxes us, somewhat of a natural high. With so many immediate onset incentives to eating these sweet treats no wonder we get carried away. Let’s go over some good ways to control these cravings, instead of letting the cravings control us.
Eat regularly: Having a balanced and healthy diet with proper intervals of eating will keep your blood sugar more level and reduce the risk of craving sweets, and over indulging.
Drink water, stay hydrated: If 80% of Americans are dehydrated daily, then odds are you are dehydrated. Which can be mistaken for hunger, even if your needs are fulfilled. So next time you crave a cupcake or cookie, drink some good old calorie free tap water.
Go natural, eat fruit: If you crave sweets indulge in some chocolate covered strawberries, or have an apple. This will be a lot easier and efficient for your body to break down and will also have some nutrients to go with the calories.
Take a walk: Stop obsessing and get your mind off by getting outside. Change the subject of your mental conversation and often your cravings will subside.
Work brought me to New York City this week and unlike most business trips, I actually had a few hours on Tuesday evening to enjoy by myself. The City looked very festive and no matter where I went, there were plenty of lights, wreaths and all the other decorations you would associate with this time of year.
Shown above is Grand Central Station on 42nd Street. This and the neighboring Chrysler Building are two of my favorite in NYC. The first time I came to NYC, I emerged from Grand Central, walked out to the streets of Midtown, looked up and saw the Chrysler Building. I’ve been in love with New York City ever since.
The skating rink at Bryant Park (shown above) might be less famous than Rockefeller Center’s, but it is larger and far more fun. Earlier this year I tweeted a photo of hundreds on the park doing yoga after work. No matter the time of year I always enjoy stopping by Bryant Park.
Excluding Times Square, I cannot think of a more crowded destination for tourists than NYC’s than Rockefeller Center. The ice rink and Christmas tree below always looks pitifully small under the soaring art deco sky scraper, but that doesn’t deter the crowds who come to get their photograph taken.
Here is today’s installment of my gratuitous handsome Christmas-themed posts. I don’t really care what he’s selling, because if Santa’s elves look like this I’ll move to the North Pole.
Just to be clear, I think US Supreme Court Justice, Antonin Scalia is always a dick, but I was reminded how much of a dick he really is this past week when he was at Princeton University. While there he defended his past homophobic writings and remarks; in particular commenting on what he refers to as the “Reduction of the Absurd” where he compares laws that decriminalize homosexuality to laws that ban bestiality and murder.
Keep in mind Scalia maintains he is not biased and is perfectly able to keep an open mind when he listens to the arguments regarding DOMA and Prop 8 later next year, although I’m not sure anyone but Justice Scalia believes that bunch of malarkey.
What a dick.

I suppose there are never enough gag gifts, but I’ll pass thank you.
Remember Jeff? Long time readers will recall he was a Men of Twitter – a regular post I use to share on this blog. Actually last year at this time he was featured in my “Holiday Themed Men of Twitter” so it seems appropriate to bring him back again as part of my daily man candy post to celebrate Christmas. I still find him very handsome.

I’ve read several blog posts from guys saying they just aren’t feeling the holiday spirit this year. I get that life isn’t comprised of sugar plum dreams and some years we just don’t feel it. However, this makes me feel badly because the season will be over in just a few weeks.
Since we cannot rewind the clock and get back this time, I’d encourage you to make the most of the season by focusing on the things you are most grateful for and those you love most. I can’t help but think that if we focused more on these things then the pressures associated with the holiday and the annoyances forced upon us by retailers might just fade away.
Because I really do want to wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
Last week I published my annual Santa Speedo Run video and I’m not sure why it didn’t occur to me to have a similar themed Temptation Tuesday, but with my decision to post Christmas-themed guy-candy photos each day this week, I’ve rectified the oversight. This is a photo of a handsome participant from the 2010 run captured by Edge Boston.
One day before the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting the NRA tweeted that their facebook page had reached 1.7 million “likes”. To anyone living in the United States, this would not be a surprise. My personal views of outlawing all semi-automatic and automatic weapons, restricting the production of ammunition and insisting upon oversight and regulations that are as strict as other industrialized nations makes me seem like a left-wing freak by comparison to my fellow Americans.
Nearly 30,000 Americans are killed by guns each year
Last week when I Tweeted about the tragedy and wrote a post about the shooting many were quick to point out that if someone wants to commit these crimes gun control would not prevent them. However, I can’t think of a more naive defense. Of course I don’t presume that if we had strict gun control laws we would never have shootings, but there is big difference between “never” and a significant drop in deaths caused by guns. Don’t believe me; look at other democratic, industrialized nations.

Gun control works and it would work here too. If we didn’t believe armament restrictions and regulation was effective, we wouldn’t make it illegal to sell grenades, grenade launchers and bazookas. Its not that far of a stretch in the aftermath of this tragedy to imagine how many more might have been killed if these items were not banned so if it makes sense to restrict these armaments where is the defense for allowing Americans to legally purchase semi-automatic and automatic guns and ammunition with less paperwork than renting a car?

Maybe if we had gun control the tragedy in Sandy Hook would have still happened, but at least as a nation we could say that we’re working to try to prevent it rather than shrugging our shoulders and shaking our heads at the senseless nature of it all.
I recognize that there is a lot of discussion about if the shooter from this tragedy was mentally ill (and my guess is he must have been). While there is much work to be done to help those suffering from mental illness I see these as two separate issues. Without easy access to guns who could say what might have been or if this tragedy would’ve been avoided. I can’t wrap my head around the fact that so many Americans naively assume gun control won’t work; all the data on this suggests otherwise. I find it sickening that a nation with such incredible vision could be so blind on this topic.
Last week Huffington Post asked readers to vote if new ManHunt billboards in Times Square are offensive in their post, Manhunt Ad Appears in New York’s Time Square.
What is the basis of the question? There are never questions about saucy billboards featuring bone-thin supermodels flaunting bare skin nor does there seem to be any aversion to violent movies being plastered through out Times Square.
While one too many Walt Disney musicals might be playing on Broadway in my opinion, last time I checked this was New York City not Orlando. People need to grow up and recognize a billboard featuring two men embracing or a bare chested male model is not risque; not even for my conservative hometown, Boston, where ManHunt calls home.
If open displays of sexuality are really disturbing, perhaps we can direct the NYPD to ask all those overexcited tourists in Times Square to stop slipping each other the tongue and openly groping each other first.
Work has brought me into NYC today and I’ll be staying in Gotham for the next few days. You better believe that I’m keeping an eye out for this guy so I can personally thank him for his civil service. I’m very thoughtful like that.
