This map makes me mad

Affordable Care Act

The map above makes me angry. I feel like it smacks of racism. Not the in-your-face brand of racism that we may see in movies or from the Civil Rights era, but a more insidious type of racism.

How else would one explain how those states with some of the highest minority rates and most in need for access to healthcare – being blocked at every turn by their predominantly white, Republican Governors? While I have no doubt there are many who oppose the expansion of Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act on principle, I also think that many more don’t see supporting the poorest among us (many of whom belong to minority communities of color) as a priority and are intentionally doing their best to block access to this sort of care.

The NYT articulates my assertions far better in their article from earlier this month Millions of Poor are Left Uncovered by Health Law.

Fake Time Magazine cover

Fake Time Magazine coverThis is a brilliant spoof of Time Magazine’s notorious May 2012 breastfeeding cover.  Somehow the Photoshopped heads of Tea Party wingnut Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and our sycophant Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH) is both upsetting and spot on.

I thought after the Republican Party’s expectations were dashed in the 2012 elections they would move away from their racist tinged Tea Party extremes.  After all it wasn’t their moderation that led them to lose their bid for President, control of the US Senate, and 8 seats (cutting into their majority control) in the US House of Representatives.

American politics: Learning from history

American PoliticsTo say I’m disappointed in our government in DC would be an understatement. Once upon a time, our politicians were articulate, thoughtful and offered hope. Calling each other names and seething with contempt for each other seems more like behavior exhibited on an elementary school yard playground than from adults expected to help solve real-world, complicated problems.

Believe 2016

cruz and palin 2016The most often heard critique regarding politics in America is that Democrats and Republicans cannot find common ground on anything anymore. Here is a humorous if not frightening idea that I first saw posted on Joe.My.God.

I suppose this is one idea that would appeal to many Tea Party / Conservative Republicans and Democrats alike. Leaving only moderate Republicans and self-identified Independents shuddering at the thought. It would be interesting to see just how many red states this just might turn purple and how many purple states might turn blue if such a ticket ever manifest.

US Sen Cruz recites Green Eggs and Ham

green-eggs-and-hamLast night right wing whack job, US Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) , was pretending to filibuster in protest of President Obama’s healthcare legislation “Obamacare”. He went on to quote passages from the Bible and to compare President Obama’s legislation similar to the policies of the German Nazis in WWII.

His chicanery has created a huge divide between ‘establishment’ Republicans who continue to shun this man and Tea Party supporters like Sarah Palin who are cheering him on, which makes me wonder – what is the end game?  When can the US Congress, and in particular the Republican Party grow up and start to work with their counterparts to negotiate in good faith and get back to work. I’m tired of these photo ops, because that is all this is.

Renegade states banning processing of military benefits for same-sex couples

gay rightsOklahoma has become the fourth state to deny processing benefits for same-sex military couples; the state joins those other bastions of progress and intellect (I jest):  Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.

Military couples in those states can still apply for such rights on federal military bases but that is not necessarily feasible in some of these states that are quite large .  This begs the question since when do Governors of certain states get to ignore Federal law? The answer is apparently when you are a bigot and find it convenient to appeal to your homophobic base.  I suppose it goes without saying that the Governors of these four states are all Republicans.

Why I’m voting for Carl Sciortino

Carl Sciortino is an openly gay progressive candidate who champions social equality and justice causes. So when Carl announced that he would run to fill Ed Markey’s (D-MA) seat in the US House of Representatives, I immediately knew I’d be voting for him.

However, some of you may not know who Carl is and after I saw his campaign video featuring his Dad, I thought this was the perfect opportunity / excuse to give Carl a plug on my blog.

Bill Clinton on assault weapons

Assault Weapons BanIn light of yet another shooting in the United States, I thought sharing President Clinton’s quote is worth revisiting.

Only in America: Iowa issues gun permits to the blind

Iowa legalizes guns for the blindAmerica’s perverse notion that public safety can only be enhanced by putting more guns on the street never ceases to amaze me. This latest news that Iowa is now issuing gun permits to the legally blind seems insane, but fortunately Michael Barber, a blind man who was interviewed was able to clear up this baffling mystery.  Barber explains, “When you shoot a gun, you take it out and point and shoot, and I don’t think eyesight is necessary.

If I didn’t know any better, I would think this is a Saturday Night Live spoof, but sadly this is just another example of how insane my country’s pro-gun laws have now become.  You can read more about this here.

Dick of the week: Liz Cheney

Liz Cheney Dick of the WeekDarth Vader’s daughter, Liz Cheney, is making a run against conservative Republican incumbent, Sen. Mike Enzi. Last week Liz threw her lesbian sister, Mary Cheney, under the proverbial campaign bus when she went out of her way to say, I’m not pro-gay marriage.

I have to admit I enjoyed reading Mary Cheney’s response to her sister, For the record, I love my sister, but she is dead wrong on the issue of marriage…It’s not something to be decided by a show of hands.

Kristof Buntinx designs underwear protesting Russian LGBT laws

Kristof BuntinxRussian designer, Kristoff Buntinx, is launching a new line of boxer underwear to protest Russia’s homophobic laws that essentially make being gay illegal. His designs blend the LGBT rainbow with Russian symbols as a way to poke fun at the laws and allow Russians a private way to protest laws without risking jail sentences.

Called “From Russia With Love”, Buntix is now working with photographer Herman Van Gestel to create a gay themed calendar of men in the boxers that they hope to release in late September.

Want to read more? Check out Kristoff Buntix website, www.kristofbuntix.com you can also check out the making of the calendar in this report from TV Brussel – note this isn’t in English, but somehow I think most of you will not mind.

Russia’s shameful present: LGBT persecution continues

welcome sochi 2014 - olympicsDid you know that Russia’s new laws could send you to jail if you are “pro-gay”.  Although nobody is really certain what that means, the growing number of hate-infused bills becoming law just as Russia is preparing to host the world in the next Winter Olympics is troublesome in the least.

CNN has an interesting opinion piece entitled Make Olympics in Russia the Gayest Ever.  The editorial offers suggestions on how to support greater acceptance if not equality for the LGBT community at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.  In case you think this is all an overreaction – check out some of the recent legislation passed by Putin.

Did you know there is a law that allows police to arrest “pro-gay” tourists?  There is another law that labels any writing or statement calling for tolerance or equality (like this blog post) as pornography and is punishable by fine and jail time. Putin also banned adoptions of Russian children to any country where LGBT marriage is legal. Rumors now suggest the Russian government may start to remove children from same-sex couples.

What do you make of the vigilante laws in Russia that encourage violence against the LGBT community?  I can’t even wrap my head around this.

RNC throws another tantrum

Hillary ClintonYesterday The Republican National Committee (RNC) wrote letters to NBC and CNN threatening to pull broadcasting rights to to their primary debates if a documentary on Hillary Clinton was produced or shown by the networks.

I couldn’t care less

However, both networks either think the RNC is bluffing or simply don’t care because later in the afternoon CNN and NBC, in separate statements, said they would move forward with the Clinton projects.

To be perfectly fair, I can understand the concern the RNC has about a potential Presidential candidate receiving favorable air time but as is so often the case with the Republican Party it is their method and delivery that leaves me cold. Tantrums and ultimatums work when you are a child – or perhaps when you work in Congress but the real world operates a tad differently.

My response to the RNC would have been exactly the same. I’m sure the ratings for a Hillary Clinton documentary will dwarf the RNC primary debates and that more than anything should cause the Republican Party to rethink what that means for their ability to recapture the White House. It’s time to evolve.
