One week til Brazil

Brasilian GuySource: BoyMagiaBr

One week from today I will board a plane and fly down to Brazil. While I’ve been to Brazil many times, I have not visited in a few years.  This trip will bring me to Belo Horizonte, Floripa and Sao Paulo. Until then, I thought I’d tempt you with this photo from Rio de Janeiro.

Straight people are so weird

The video is entitled “Best Calf Workout Ever!” but I disagree.  Having a 90-lbs woman ride you like a Shetland pony at a public gym is odd.

Furry Friday

Time to pull on the long johns to stay warm.

BosGuy brain teaser

BosGuy riddleEach Friday morning I post a riddle or brain teaser.  The idea is to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. Share with friends or coworkers if you cannot figure out the answer and together perhaps you can determine the answer.

Post your answers in the comments section, and I’ll confirm the correct responses after lunch to give everyone a fair chance.

This week’s riddle:  A ladder hangs over the side of a ship anchored in a port. The bottom rung touches the water. The distance between rungs is 20 cm and the length of the ladder is 180 cm. The tide is rising at the rate of 15 cm each hour.

When will the water reach the seventh rung from the top?

Suddenly it makes sense

Suddenly it makes senseIt is several weeks into the football season, and I continue to require these reminders why this sport has the potential to hold my attention.  Someone needs to let them know the under-eye goth make up is sloppily applied and overdone. I’d also suggest happier colors (think Keisha).

Kranzky’s Korner

What if you had a game plan to set yourself up for success that goes beyond just the first 1 to 2 weeks of the New Year?

Instead of turning your world upside down come January 1st, let’s try a more sane approach by identifying unhealthy habits, and establishing healthier ones starting today.  Together we can weather the holiday season and give you a leg up on the New Year, which is now just 8 weeks away. I’m going to regularly post ideas here so you can hit the ground running come 2013.

We’ve compiled 5 tips to help you implement healthy habits.

1) Start early this year and make a commitment to yourself Believe that you are making an important change and start today. If it helps, write down your personal fitness and health goals (e.g. I don’t want to gain any weight during the holiday season or I want to look fantastic in my new bathing suit for the winter party in Miami this year).

2) Start simple Set realistic and attainable goals to build your confidence – for example, if you are not currently going to the gym – commit to go 2x a week and gradually increase the frequency of your visits.

3) Remove temptation Start today by reducing the sugary and salty drinks, snacks and meals and replace them with healthier options.  If you are smoking or drinking start a plan to curb these.

4) Get a buddy We are social people and together you can keep each other motivated and honest.  Together you can set a schedule and ensure you stick to it.  If you can’t find a buddy near you – reach out to BosGuy and let him know what you are doing and your progress.

5) Remember why you are doing this A healthier you = A happier you.  There are physical benefits like boosting your immune system, sleeping better and obviously looking better, but there are also psychological benefits such as less likely to suffer from depression and less stressed.

By starting today, together we can weather the holiday season and you will be that much further ahead of the game come the New Year.  Living healthier means a happier 2013; BosGuy will be joining you on this journey so won’t you join us?

Boston Santa Speedo Run

Santa Speedo RunOne month from today Boston will host the 13th annual Santa Speedo Run.  This year the local beneficiary will be Play Ball Foundation.

Over the years, this hilarious and fun tradition has spread to other cities so check and see if a similar event will be taking place in your hometown.

The run starts at 1pm on Boylston Street near the Prudential Mall so arrive early to cheer runners who will be in speedos running to raise money for the Play Ball Foundation.  Never been or won’t be able to attend? Here is a video from last year.

Will the Republican Party become more socially progressive

Meghan supports legalization of marijuana and same sex marriage

Shortly after I published my previous post Lessons for the Republican Party I stumbled upon this video clip of Meghan McCain on Anderson Live.  Meghan McCain has been ridiculed by the Republican Party calling her a RINO (Republican In Name Only) because of her more socially progressive stands (e.g. unflinching support for same sex marriage).  It is this more socially progressive wing in their party, that I would like to see start flexing its muscle.

Lessons for the Republican Party

With the national elections now behind us and the results tallied we can go back to a life not consumed by politics.  However, I can’t help but wonder what lessons the Republican Party might learn.

Will Tea Party or Christian Conservative elements of the Republican Party emerge or will a more socially progressive wing flex its muscle? One need not be a political scientist to understand the Republican Party is losing ground with increasingly important voting demographics like  Women (who made up more than 54% of the electorate) and Latino voters, which is one of the fastest growing demographics in the U.S. (now 10% of the electorate).

Perhaps the best evidence of the Republican Party’s waning influence was seen in the US Senate races.  With Democrats defending 23 seats and Republicans defending only 10 seats (and needing to pick up just 4 seats to gain a majority)  it was widely believed Democrats would lose control of the Senate. However, across the country Republicans lost in states like MA and CT in the Northeast, WI and IN in the MidWest and even in the South in VA. The lesson from the 2012 election is that you can no longer support programs that marginalize women or minority groups and expect to win (with the possible exception of the South).

My message to Republicans Drop the faith-laced language, the xenophobic hyperbole, your homophobic stereotypes and you will find a receptive audience to your smaller government message.  If you cannot, your days as a national party are numbered.

Flying dinosaur in Boston

I stumbled upon this crazy photograph by Arthur Pollock of a dinosaur being delivered to the Boston Museum of Science back in 1984 on Boing Boing, but the source of the photo is Retronaut.com.  I wonder what people in Boston must have thought as they looked up and saw a life sized dinosaur attached to a helicopter.

Husbands: Redefining the newlywed sitcom

Are you watching the online series, Husbands?

Husbands tells the story of two young men, athlete Brady Kelly and tabloid darling Cheeks who spark a media firestorm when they wake up legally married after a drunken weekend in Vegas.  Each episode runs less than 10 minutes.  I’ve not yet had a chance to view this series and was curious what people have thought of it.

Paperless office

My firm has made a concerted effort to go paperless both to be more environmentally friendly as well as to save costs.  Many wholeheartedly embrace this but clearly this colleague finds the policy disconcerting. I wonder if the A&E show Hoarders would consider coming to this office. One can only imagine what their home looks like.

Election night results

The 2012 election last night delivered in spades for social progressives.  I was pleased to see marriage equality initiatives pass for the first time at the ballot box, and I hope the success emboldens others.

Health benefits of a vegetarian / vegan diet

vegetarian dietThe Huffington Post recently wrote an article Why do vegetarians live longerin response to a recent study that showed  on average veggie lovers lived approximately 8 years longer. It points out that vegetarians are less likely to die from heart disease or have high cholesterol. Additionally the incidence of all cancers combined is lower and vegetarians are less susceptible to other killers like strokes, Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

I love vegetables and at times have suspended eating meat for a few weeks to quickly drop 5-10 pounds.  When I tell people this I feel like many think I’m exaggerating but according to this article on average, vegans are 30 pounds lighter and 5 units lighter on the BMI scale.

Would you consider eliminating meat from your diet or going vegan if it meant you’d drop a waist size or two?
