BosGuy’s credo

“I do” support marriage equality

I do 74When I read that the Seattle Times had taken the unprecedented step of launching a social media campaign to support same-sex marriage, I knew something fundamental had changed in America.

I rashly decided to post a photo of myself holding the I do 74 sign to express my support for those in Washington State and since then, each day have posted photos of others doing the same.  Photos have been sent to me by fellow bloggers, family, friends and blog readers.

Nearly 90 posed and sent in photos over the last 45 days

Today is election day and several states (Washington included) have voters going to the polls to determine if same sex marriage should be legal, and I feel more confident than ever that they just might succeed.

Special thanks to my sister, Elizabeth, for regularly sending in photos from her town of Amesbury, MA and to my partner, Sergio, for snapping more than a few photos of friends as well.

Check out the nearly 90 people who  posed by linking here.

Thank you

twitter profileLast week @BostonLesbian started following me on Twitter.  This individual is a Twitter newbie, but I hope she sticks with it.  If her profile is an example of her sense of humor, I think she’ll be fun to follow.

Her Tweets direct you back to a hilarious Tumblr page – this is my favorite, When Someone Tells Me They are Voting for Mittens.

Gingerbread Oreos now at Walmart

In September Nabisco introduced Candy Corn Oreos in time for Halloween, and now the cookie company is selling for a limited time at Walmart, Gingerbread Oreos. Have you tried them? What do you think?

As with my original post about Candy Corn Oreos, I thought I should share this YouTube video for “The Dipr” – a cookie dipping spoon.

Four eagerly anticipated South End restaurants

A few restaurants in Boston’s South End neighborhood have closed over the past few years, creating vacancies in some prime locations.  These spaces did not remain unclaimed for long and some of these restaurants have recently opened; most recently BoMA Restaurant. However, there remain four locations of particular interest that will open soon.

CINQUECENTO started training new staff last Friday in preparation for their opening later this month. This is the Aquitaine Group’s eighth property and first Italian restaurant.  Located at 500 Harrison Avenue, this is likely to be one of the largest restaurants in the neighborhood too with 300+ seats as well as private dining space and a beautiful patio.

Location: 500 Harrison Avenue / Phone: 617-247-1102

Menu: Italian

Anticipated opening to public: mid November

Estelles South EndESTELLE’S will likely open just weeks after Cinquecento.  Owned by chef Brian Poe (Poe’s Kitchen and The Rattlensake in Back Bay), Estelle will serve southern cuisine.  Poe has opened up the space which was previously a pizzeria and has a nice looking bar that neighbors will undoubtably appreciate.

Location: 782 Tremont Street (Mass Ave & Tremont Street)

Menu: Southern cuisine

Anticipated opening to public: December

FIVE HORSES TAVERN was first reported by Eater Boston to open a second location in space formerly occupied by Columbus Cafe. Five Horses Tavern in Somerville serves food with a similar, affordable price point to Columbus Cafe. If they can pull this off, this could become the neighborhood’s best cheap eats and bar.

Location: 535 Columbus Avenue (Columbus & Claremont Park)

Menu: American comfort food with entrees from $9 – $18

Anticipated opening to public: Unknown

BOSTON CHOPS is opening in the space formerly occupied by Ginger Park and before that, banq. Speculation about what Chef Coombs has in mind when he refers to it as an “urban steakhouse” keeps me guessing. In an interview with Grub Street Boston he said, “The only thing we have in common with a typical steakhouse is that we’ll serve cow.

Location: 1375 Washington Street (Washington & Union Park)

Menu: New concept steakhouse

Anticipated opening to public: Unknown

BosGuy’s election predictions

While nobody knows for certain, my gut says Obama will pick up the necessary 270 electoral votes tomorrow. Moreover, I believe Democrats will retain their slim majority in the US Senate.  I base these “predictions” on the following:

– I believe the only true “swing” states are OH, VA, FL, CO, IA and NH.   States like WI, MI, PA, NM and NV have been called “swing states”,  but I disagree and think Obama will win all these states.

– If Obama wins WI, MI, PA, and NM as I suggest, he only needs to carry OH to win.  I do happen to believe Obama may also win VA and IA; making outcomes in CO, NH and FL irrelevant.

– There are more Senate Democrats running for reelection, but I believe the party is likely to only lose 3 seats:  MT, ND and NE.   Conversely I believe Democrats will likely pick up seats in CT and MA. The race in ME will likely be won by an Independent who will caucus with Democrats; offsetting the loss of 3 Senate seats.

– Should Romney carry VA, I’d assume Democrats would lose the Senate race netting them a loss of one seat, but I’m not ready to concede VA.  It also looks like Tommy Thompson might beat Tammy Baldwin in WI but Democrats would still retain a slim majority in the Senate.

For the benefit of all let me state the obvious 1) These are my own opinions based on what I’ve read and seen; 2) You are also entitled to your own opinion, but I don’t have to necessarily agree with you.

Best Halloween costume of 2012

I know that Halloween has come and gone, but I just stumbled upon this image from Seduced By The New blog and had to share this costume of “Binders full of Women”.

BosGuy home furnishing

BoConcept FurnitureLast week we finally made time to hang the wall unit we purchased from BoConcept earlier this fall.  The Volani wall unit provides me with some much needed storage (something always an issue in a city apartment).  I could not be happier with how it complements the sideboard.

Media whoring

Over the past couple of weeks there have been a few stories broadcast far and wide that have left me scratching my head in bewilderment.

First came the notorious Tweet from Ann Coulter when she referred to President Obama as a “retard”. Was the Tweet offensive? Sure, but can anyone think of a single thing this woman has ever said that wan’t offensive so I was floored when national media outlets started to report it. My jaw dropped to the floor when CNN’s show Piers Morgan invited her as a guest to discuss the controversy; one word CNN – shameful.

Next came chaplain John McTernan (who the heck is he anyway?) who made news because he blamed Hurricane Sandy on President Obama’s support for same sex marriage. News outlets  reported this story and even used it as fodder (probably to fill air time and posts).

I would expect conservative-leaning media outlets and blogs to eat this stuff up, but I don’t understand why more respectable news agencies and liberal-leaning media outlets also feel the need to pick up these stories.  Can you imagine where Ann Coulter’s career would be if her hateful comments were not reported?  Additionally, do you think this chaplain or for that matter any other crazy pastor would make these outrageous statements if their reach ended where their voice trailed off?

I think we all deserve better.  Shame on the US media outlets for being such willing accomplices to these harlots.
