Does Romney’s selection of Ryan signal a change

My dislike for Governor Mitt Romney is more than obvious to anyone who visits my blog. Having said that, Romney’s selection for his Vice Presidential candidate, Paul Ryan, is a logical choice and a decision he made which I can respect; unlike McCain’s selection four years ago.

I fundamentally disagree with Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan for reasons pertaining to economics and social issues, and I will be using my blog as a platform to express my disagreements in the months to come.

However, when I was younger my mother made us point out positives in any situation and while I loathed this as a kid, I appreciate the lessons it taught me. In honor of Mom, here are a few positives I have gleaned.

– For the first time in a very long time neither of the two candidates appear to be either from the South nor do they appear to be loved by Christian Conservatives. Could this be a sign that the conservative South and right wing religious wackos are losing their influence in the party – I hope so.

– Both are articulate and intelligent men well educated and not prone to saying things like nucular (or however that was suppose to be spelled).

– Romney and Ryan will (hopefully) give voice to the ever quiet conservatives who see politics outside the lens of religion; meaning issues like birth control need not be a leading topic in the campaign.

I would like to see more political choice in this country – not less. To do that the Republican Party needs to build a bigger tent (to borrow a common political metaphor here in the US). The Republican Party needs to have a strong wing that is socially progressive; similar to many of the former Republicans from the Northeast like Chafee & Snowe. It makes no sense to me that the Republican Party is so beholden to religion and legislating “their” morality.

As a gay adult I am infuriated by the way the Republican party speaks to me or in the case of my current US Senator (Scott Brown) — won’t speak to me. I have no interest in seeing the current Republican Party succeed, but I do hope that this frightening party can untie itself from the religious zealots and conspiracy quacks who currently rule the roost.

Is this the ticket that will signify a change so one need not be a Baptist from the South who questions evolution to get atop the ticket? I hope so.

REI CEO endorses marriage equality in letter to employees

2012 appears to be the year US businesses decided to weigh in on the issue of same sex marriage.  There have been a few organizations (notably Chick-Fil-A) that have indicated their opposition to same-sex marriage, but most that have spoken on this issue have come out in favor of same-sex marriage.

The ever growing list of marquee companies putting their reputation on the line and risking the ire of those who disagree with supporting LGBT rights is a testament to how far this conversation has come and how accepting the American public is becoming.

Earlier this week Towleroad reported that REI has joined the list of companies publicly backing same sex marriage.  Washington United for Marriage said CEO and President Sally Jewell strongly endorsed marriage equality in a letter to employees earlier this month. Read Jewell’s heartfelt blog post to REI employees here.

Thank you Sally Jewell for your support

BosGuy brain teaser

cherubsEach Friday morning I post a riddle or brain teaser.  The idea is to get you to think outside the box and test your knowledge.  If you cannot figure this out, share it with friends or co-workers and collectively you may get the right answer.

I do not publish correct answers in the comments section until lunch time here on the East coast to give people a chance to guess and write their answers.

This week’s riddle / brainteaser:  The man whose academy survived for 900 years appears in what painting by Raphael?  To be clear, to give the correct answer I need the name of the individual and the painting.

Hint: This giant fresco is on display in the Vatican museum.

Miss Piggy: Snackcercise

No wonder I’m struggling to get the body I want. I’ve been going about this the wrong way. I should’ve been listening to Miss Piggy all along. After all she looks fabulous.

Follow her advice “remove the wrapper, raise the candy and munch and crunch and chomp and chew…”

First kiss

gay kissI can ask any of my girlfriends and they will be able to recite when and where they had their first kiss.  For some it was all they hoped (or perhaps their memory is just kind) and for some it was terrible and results in groans or giggles thinking back to that moment.

First Gay Kiss

However, for most gay men and women, there are two first kisses.  That first kiss with the member of the opposite sex and then your first kiss with a person of the same sex. While I was perusing YouTube earlier this week, I saw a lot of videos of guys talking about their “first gay kiss” and it got me to thinking…

Do you remember your first kiss with a person of the same sex? Was it all you hoped for? Was it a complete disaster? Do tell.

2012 Carnival in Provincetown

Carnival Week in Provincetown started this past Saturday. Today, the week-long celebration, comes together on Commercial Street for the big parade. This year’s theme is A Space Odessey.

I’ll be taking many photos so I can share the experience for anyone interested who was not able to attend.  I’ve included a quick video I created last year after the 2011 Carnival parade. Enjoy this clip.

The London Olympics games have introduced me to so many new sports.  With all the attention on sports like handball — doesn’t that sound naughty? I can hardly say it without laughing — I’d nearly forgotten the appeal of wrestling.  These images photographed by Brent Martin have me wishing I watched more wrestling matches.

Boston rent continues to rise

Rents and housing prices will never compete with those in New York City or even San Francisco, but sadly Boston does have a well deserved reputation for being a very expensive place to live.

An article that appeared in The Boston Globe on Tuesday about the unusually tight rental market in Boston points to a large influx of empty-nesters who are buying and renting properties as fast as they become available.

The Boston Globe story found that rent for a two-bedroom apartment ranges between an average of $1,237 per month in Dorchester to $2,857 per month in Back Bay.   Let’s hope that more properties will be built and quickly so the market doesn’t add any more stress on young professional, couples and families who want to remain in Boston but are priced out of the market.

Pressure on Chick-Fil-A ain’t going away

berenstain-bears-chick-fil-aThe Public Relations department for Chick-Fil-A may hope the controversy stirred up by their president, Dan Cathy, will now go away, but I have no intention of letting this issue drop.

And thanks to 80,000 petition signatures urging the publisher of the Berenstains Bears, HarperCollins, to stop providing books in Chick-fil-A Kids’ meals, I’m not alone either.

Last week representatives from CREDO Action, SumofUs.org and Faithful America delivered the signed petition to HarperCollins.  The SumofUs.org founder had this to say why they collected signatures.

By partnering with Chick-fil-A, a company that actively bankrolls hatred and discrimination against the LGBT community, HarperCollins is undermining the lessons of the beloved Bear family. The Berenstains should follow the Muppets’ lead, and cut ties with Chick-fil-A. HarperCollins has a chance here to make a stand for equality and strike a blow against bigotry.

Dave Andelman should be muzzled

david andelmanThere has been a bit of controversy raging among the world of foodies in Boston due to comments made by Dave Andelman from the Phantom Gourmet.  Last week Andelman told BostonInno all food trucks should be 1,000′ from brick and mortar restaurants. He has since said 500′ would be sufficient, but I find his entire argument inane.

The basis of Andelman’s argument (as I understand it) is that the less costly business model for food trucks puts traditional restaurants at a disadvantage so food trucks may charge a lower price.  While this is true, I wonder if Andelman has lost his mind entirely since he is essentially saying dining from a food truck is the equivalent of dining at a restaurant, which last time I checked came with perks like: tables, chairs, climate control, wait staff, bathrooms, etc… Never mind the fact that when the mercury has risen (or more likely in the months to come plummets) food trucks in Boston are at a distinct disadvantage.

Whoever handles The Phantom Gourmet’s PR should be fired for allowing this discussion to take place and Andelman should be muzzled.

Happy Hump Day

Carnival in Provincetown

I leave for Provincetown later today on the afternoon high speed ferry and with any luck I’ll be sipping a cocktail at the Boatslip Tea Dance this afternoon.  I will be posting photos from Ptown’s Carnival Week celebration which actually started this past Saturday.

In the interim, I thought I’d share some pictures from Carnival 2011.
