Revisiting Sky Mall

Delta Sky MallReaders may recall some of my previous Sky Mall inspired posts like April’s Delta Airlines Sky Mall, January’s Strolling down the Delta Sky Mall aisle and last year’s What not to buy.  The Sky Mall catalog is a bizarre shopping catalog of randomly selected items that often appear to me as rejects from the Home Shopping Television Network.  While sitting on the tarmac waiting to take off I have found browsing this catalog to be an excellent distraction.

The Summer 2012 catalog did not disappoint with a series of odd items that left me wondering “who buys this stuff?”  By the way, if you are wondering the life sized Bigfoot statue which is just perfect for your garden is only a paltry $2,250.

Restaurant Week Boston starts August 19th

restaurant-week-bostonRestaurant Week Boston is set to begin later this month, but to ensure you will be able to dine at a restaurant of your choosing it is wise to make reservations now.  Many of the city’s premiere dining establishments will fill to capacity far in advance of Restaurant Week. The South End, has nearly 20 participating restaurants, you may see a complete list of places to dine in Boston, here.

If this is your first time making reservations during Restaurant Week, consider the following tips or guidelines to maximize your dining experience.

– Not all participating establishments are worth visiting. Restaurants serve 3 courses from a Prix Fixe menu for $33.12.  If most of the restaurant’s main plates are less than $20.00 you are not likely saving much money. Look for restaurants with a higher price point.

– Restaurant Week is designed to bring crowds into restaurants during a time that is normally quiet.  To avoid the crush and not compromise on the service, make reservations for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

– Select a restaurant you have never had a chance to visit. Use the opportunity to explore new places.  You may be pleasantly surprised and discover a new favorite.

Obama Administration responds to Stop the Deportations

the doma projectThe DOMA Project blog, StopTheDeportations.com, announced late last week that the Obama Administration was expanding its deportation policy to LGBT families.

The DOMA Project was responding to the Deputy Press Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security which in a surprising shift in policy with respect to married same-sex couples facing deportation said on August 1st, “When exercising prosecutorial discretion in enforcement matters, DHS looks at the totality of the circumstances presented in individual cases, including whether an individual has close family ties to the United States as demonstrated by his or her same-sex marriage or other longstanding relationship to a United States citizen.”

Restaurant review: Meli

Just a block or two from the Empire State Building is a new Greek restaurant called Meli.  The evening I dined there it was nearly empty, but I’m sure as word gets out that will change.  I would describe Meli as upscale Greek with a twist and that extends to both the decor as well as the menu. The main dining room is bright with high ceilings, an impressive chandelier and large dramatic images of Greece. meli-midtown

The plates include all the ingredients you expect in Greek food but the menu has a very modern take on the cuisine.  A good example would be the starter, Grilled Eggplant Gazpacho.  Although the gazpacho and much of the menu was appealing, I stuck with some traditional choices and walked away very satisfied.

I started my dinner with the beet salad.  The roasted beets encircled a cool creamy feta and garlic spread with crushed almonds.  It was a delicious and filling way to start dinner, and something I could order over and over again.  As I was finishing my salad, I was brought an incredibly hot mousaka.  Meli does not use eggplant and zucchini in their recipe rather they include artichoke hearts, which gives a subtle flavoring that is very agreeable with the ground beef and potatoes.

Main plates at Meli range from $18 (my mousaka) to $32 and starters and salads range from $9 to $15.   The food, service and setting all make the price point a good deal and a place worth trying.

Meli is located at 1 East 35th Street between 5th and Madison Avenue.   The restaurant appears to be having issues with their website so I would recommend calling if you have any questions.

Teen bride Courtney Stodden gets “couples therapy”

Last summer I posted a video clip from AC 360 when Anderson Cooper featured the 16 year old bride, Courtney Stodden, who was marrying 51 year old actor, Doug Hutchison, in my post Must be love.

TMZ reports, … Stodden — who married Hutchison when she was 16 — has signed on to the upcoming season of VH1′s Couples Therapy. Sources connected to production tell us .. the couple has acknowledged there are “obvious problems in their relationship because of their age difference and the notoriety they’ve gotten because of their relationship.” Courtney and Doug — along with 4 other couples — will receive “intense counseling” throughout the course of the show … which began taping a few days ago.

This is just another example of how manufactured the veiled homophobic arguments are from Conservatives and religious elements in the US who oppose same sex marriage.  There isn’t even a peep from these supposedly “pro-marriage” groups about Stodden’s marriage and the thousands of others that take place each year merely to gain notoriety and make a mockery of the institution they supposedly cherish.

The weekend

drunk girlAre you upset it’s Monday morning? If you are like me, I’m sure you could use another day out of the office to relax.  However, I think this lady might need to take the week off to recover from her weekend.

On an unrelated note: Is this what straight clubs look like? Yikes!

About a year ago someone told me about Klout, which claims to measure your influence and compare it with others you may interact with on sites like facebook and twitter.

I don’t really take Klout that seriously but I do find it interesting.  According to Klout my areas of “influence” include the following topics: Boston, LGBT, Gay/Lesbian/BiSexual, Restaurants and Politics.

If you find this sort of thing interesting you can check out Klout online at Klout.com.  If you are on Klout you can find me at, http://klout.com/#/BosGuy

Airfare prices expected to drop August 21

Anyone who has flown recently will tell you how expensive flights in the US have become. Prices have continued to rise and according to an article in the LA Times, prices for domestic airfare rose almost 5% in the first 3 months of the year.   This comes after airfares rose more than 8% in both 2011 and 2010.

However, it looks like domestic airfares are expected to drop between 10% – 20% starting August 21st.  If you are planning a trip and can hold off until the price break you could end up saving yourself a bit of money. You can read the full article here in the LA Times.

Hotel review: The Setai Fifth Avenue

The Setai Fifth Avenue (no relation to The Setai South Beach) is one of ten properties worldwide managed by Capella Hotels. The boutique hotel opened in late 2010 and is located in Midtown just steps from The Empire State Building and Bryant Park.

The Setai places a strong emphasis on service and style. Staff are universally attentive and guests receive a welcome call after arriving to ensure everything is to their satisfaction, rooms all come with free wi-fi and a turn down service which leaves nightly treats.  The Setai’s focus on style is equal to that of service.  I found the room appealed to both the body and the eye. Click on the images to enlarge photo.setai-fifth-avenueThe stylish amenities continue in the large bathroom which includes an oversized tub that even I could fit in comfortably, ample vanity space, and a soothing shower all within easy eye shot of a small flat screen T.V.setai-fifth-avenue

HINT: Business travelers will like the complimentary shoe shine service offered to all guests each night.
