Head of the Charles Regatta is this Saturday and Sunday

Head of Charles Regatta

Head of the Charles regatta is Saturday & Sunday, October 21-22

Every city has their own traditions and events that are distinctly their own. I like to write about these events here in Boston because it is easy to take them for granted or overlook how they contribute to and enrich the city. One such unique tradition which I associate with the autumn is the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The annual event typically occurs while foliage is nearing its peak each year in Boston and it can make for a beautiful backdrop for the 11,000+ athletes who are expected come to compete in the world’s largest regatta this weekend.

The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into the world’s largest rowing competition that spans two days, drawing more than 400,000 spectators who line the banks of the Charles River on both the Cambridge and Boston sides. Be sure to check it out. I prefer to watch from the Cambridge side between the Harvard footbridge and the JFK bridge but there really isn’t a bad place to watch

For more information about this world class event visit hocr.org or check out this really interesting infographic Boston Magazine published last year (2016) about this historic and truly world class event.

Vintage gay

This week’s photograph is of a young couple at the Montagne Sainte-Genevieve Dance, in Paris in 1931 and was photographed by Brassai.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Time Out Market Boston to open in Fenway

Last year when Sergio and I were visiting Lisbon, we stumbled upon a beautiful food hall called (appropriately enough) Time Out Lisbon. It turns out that the Lisbon Market is the original Time Out (opening in 2014) but at the time we’d never heard of this international food hall that now operates in more than 100 cities and nearly 40 countries.

Earlier this month The Boston Globe wrote that Time Out Market Boston will open in the Landmark Center building in the Fenway in 2019 and will feature 16 culinary offerings, outdoor patios, two bars, a cooking academy, and a retail shop. The market will operate in a newly revitalized Fenway / Kenmore neighborhood which in recent years has seen a lot of residential development.  More news about the vendors that will participate and the opening for Boston’s TimeOut Market is sure to come in 2018.

Below are a couple of photos that I snapped when visiting Time Out Market Lisbon in September 2016.

Argenis Pinal lives in Southern California (presumably L.A.) and is a cosmetologist and body painter who makes comic book heroes and others from his imagination come alive with some truly spectacular photos that will certainly inspire you as you create your costume.

His love for comics is obvious and if you too like these characters then you definitely should add this account to your IG feed through out the year.

Nonstop flights from Boston to Sao Paulo start in 2018

gay travelStarting sometime next summer Bostonians will finally be able to fly nonstop to Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo, according to this article posted today.

Chile-based LATAM Airlines Group is smart to cash in on the more than 60,000 Brazilian residents who now call Massachusetts home (making the Bay State the second most populous Brazilian born population in the United States).

The announcement by LATAM continues a trend with Logan Airport, which is neither home nor hub for any single US carrier making it a potentially lucrative market for airlines that can come in and dominate a particular route. Traditional US carriers currently require Bostonians to travel to hub cities like Atlanta for Delta, Miami for AA  and Chicago for United, before boarding night fliights. The new nonstop route will likely be very popular.

LATAM said it plans to offer flights from Boston Logan International Airport by next summer, subject to regulatory approval.

South End

Rendering of 112 Shawmut Avenue in the South End

A significant amount of new development in recent years has taken place in the northeast corner of the South End along Harrison Avenue and Albany Street, but a new development under review just a few blocks away along Herald Street and Shawmut Avenue show developers are now eyeing properties overlooking the sunken interstate, I-90 / Mass Pike, with interest.

Last month I wrote about new office space being proposed that would redesign and build on top of a 3-story parking garage at 321 Harrison Avenue. Last Wednesday a building one block further west at 112 Shawmut Avenue held a public meeting to discuss plans to dramatically change an existing six-story building and demolish a neighboring 3-story building to create a 13-story building that would include more than 150 residential units. Below is a photo of what the building currently looks like. Boston, South End real estate

More details about the project as well as an opportunity to submit comments is available online here, 112 Shawmut Avenue Project Description.

Check out the Living Gay Brisbane blog

gay blogRecently I stumbled upon the Living Gay Brisbane blog. I can’t tell you too much about the writer who as near as I can tell has remained anonymous but describes himself as a 20-something millennial who insists he is not a cliche. From reading a few of his posts, I can tell you this 20-something, who calls Brisbane, Australia home, is quite funny.

living gay brisbaneHis posts tend to be fairly brief and easy to read, injected with humorous observations like this fairly recent post, My first time… Getting waxed.

If you like what you read, perhaps you’ll consider subscribing to his blog or you can check it out as you like from my blogroll where I’ve recently added this blog to make it easier for me to stay up to date and follow.
