Check out Tony’s Gaysian Dating blog

gay dating, gay asian datingThis past weekend I met a nice guy named Tony who lives in Boston. After being introduced by a mutual friend, we learned that we both have a blog. His blog chronicles his dating life and is called gaysiandating.

Recent posts from Tony include a fun night out at a gay bar in Iceland with a few straight guys; a sexually frustrating meeting this summer in Provincetown that may or may not (I wasn’t quite sure) turn into a friendship; and a Tinder date that really clicked until it didn’t. Sound interesting? Check out Tony’s blog and leave him a comment or two (us bloggers love that sort of thing).

Vintage gay

This week’s photo was sent to me from my friend Steve Ali. I’m unsure of the place or date but from the attire I would guess the 1940s or 1950s. Regardless of the date or location, it is clear the two men are happy to see each other.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Gay Bowl XVII comes to Boston this weekend

gay boston, gay sportsThe Gay Bowl is the national LGBT flag football tournament, put on every Columbus Day weekend by the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL). Started in 2002 as an annual national championship tournament for LGBT flag football teams, about 40 teams will compete in multiple divisions (including a women’s division) from across North America in Boston this weekend.

I first wrote about the Gay Bowl in May when it was announced that the New England Patriots would sponsor the Gay Bowl, making them first NFL team to sponsor one of the annual Gay Bowl tournaments (and let’s hope not the last).

In addition to a lot of football that will be played through the weekend, a host of social events including a “Pep Rally” party tonight at the Emerald Lounge (how appropriate is that), Bracket Reveal Party later in the evening at ICON as well as parties each night, concluding on Sunday at Royale with a closing ceremony that will take place just prior to the large dance party from Chris Harris Presents in the same venue. For more information visit the website Gay Bowl XVII.

And just to give you a flavor of how fun Boston’s league is, I wanted to share this video from Boston’s F.L.A.G. flag football league – enjoy. This week on Instagram: manexpeditions

ManExpeditions on Instagram has been around for a while but only recently have they been posting with any consistency so you may not be aware of this account which captures photos from their eco-adventure trips around the world.

Perhaps you’d like to check them out or live vicariously through their photos, which are always filled with men smiling and obviously enjoying themselves, typically somewhere in nature.  Like the photo above, which was taken this past August in Seward, Alaska.

Why sexual orientation needs to be a protected class

David Mullins, Charlie Craig, Masterpiece Cakeshop, Jack Phillips, MASTERPIECE CAKESHOP v. COLORADO CIVIL RIGHTS COMMISSIONThe Satanic Temple, which blogger Joe My God pointed out doesn’t really believe in Satan but is an atheist organization with the mission to “encourage benevolence and empathy among all people” made news last week on a topic that might at first seem frivolous but has real-life implications if you are gay.

Lucien Greaves, co-founder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, has said if the U.S. Supreme Court decides (as it is expected to) that “religious freedom” is more important than civil rights, when they hear the case Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission No. 16-111 his organization has a devilishly clever plan to troll Masterpiece Cakeshop and others like them – but more on that later. First hear me out on why this is important to you.

What if the best surgeon in your city refused to treat you, citing religious freedom?

While I would normally suggest the couple find another  business (one who supports the LGBTQ community), let me point out that by allowing this discrimination, it poses a problem that goes far beyond its hypocrisy. Nobody believes for a minute that this argument would be tolerated if the cakemaker suggested he couldn’t make cakes for Jews, who for example, could easily be classified as opposing this owner’s religious views. However, I digress. The real issue here is by allowing one business to discriminate and not provide service to a gay couple based on their selective religious teachings means that other services could also make similar claims. Although it seems far fetched, what if the best surgeon in your city refused to  treat you to you based on his / her religious freedom beliefs? Don’t think it could happen? Don’t be so sure.

making sexual orientation a protected class is both important and relevant.

Although this court case has been described as  a matter of Free Speech vs. Civil Rights, I don’t see it that way. The fact that sexual orientation is not a protected class under the Civil Rights Act of 1964, (unlike race and religion) means there is a good chance (considering the makeup of the court) that refusing to serve anyone who is LGBTQ could be affirmed as a constitutional liberty.

For this reason, The Satanic Temple (TST) announced a plan for those who feel alienated by the privileged status religion holds over sexual orientation: Request your homophobic baker make a cake for Satan. While this hardly resolves the problem, perhaps it can drive home the point that discriminating based on what a person looks like, what they believe or who they are is always wrong and providing religious protections that infringe on the rights of minority groups is inherently a bad idea for everyone involved.

Final week to see Men on Boats

Boston theater, bosartsIt is the final week to see The SpeakEasy Stage Company’s production of Men on Boats, currently being performed at the Calderwood Pavilion in the South End.

If you are looking to make plans for later this week consider picking up tickets to see this gender-bending cast of performers who use carefully exaggerated theatrics to tell the story of an actual 1869 expedition led by John Wesley Powell to chart the Colorado River.

BosGuy reviews étant in South End

étant is a neighborhood spa that has been in the South End since 1998. Over the years I have been there to get a massage and always enjoyed the professionalism and quality of their service. However, I do prefer to be able to shower after getting a full body massage and because they don’t have facilities to wash, I have in the past opted to go to other spas outside of my neighborhood.

The final week of September I took time off from work to spend part of the day with my father. My father has some circulation issues with his feet so I scheduled a thirty-minute aromatherapy hand & foot massage for the two of us; and asked the masseurs to focus on our feet. I’m not certain if my father has ever had a massage of any kind – let alone one that focuses on just the feet. He may have been a little nervous before starting but Keith Maddy (who worked on my father) was a pro because when my father emerged from his room he looked very relaxed and maybe even a little surprised by how much he enjoyed himself.

My masseur, Keelon Andrews, did an exceptional job, finding pressure points on the top, bottom and sides of my feet and even massaging my shins, which were surprisingly sore. The combination of the scented face mask, relaxing music and Keelon’s strong hands was magical and after it was done I was doubly grateful for the unseasonably warm weather that allowed us to walk out of étant wearing sandals. While the 30-minute massage isn’t cheap, it is a more affordable option than a full body massage, making it a great treat if you’re on a budget.

étant is a neighborhood spa with great staff. If they could increase their space and possibly expand to offer more facilities (e.g. saunas, showers, etc), they could be a destination spa in the city.

étant is located at 524 Tremont Street in the South End and can be found online at etant.com.

étant Aromatherapy Hand & Foot Massage 30-minutes, $65
with paraffin treatment forty-five minutes, $80
