Ab Soto: Cha Cha Bitch

Ab Soto is a queer artist who first came to my attention earlier this week in an article I read on HuffPost Gay and since watching this video I can’t get it out of my head.  He clearly has a flair for eye-catching fashion and has more wardrobe changes than a Taylor Swift video.  Check this out and get your cha cha on.

Crazy Jewish Mom on Instagram

crazyjewishmom instagramI have to confess that for the past two years I’ve been cheating on Twitter with Instagram. Part of the appeal of  Instagram are accounts like Crazy Jewish Mom.

Handsome hunk

chest, shirtless, hairy, pecs What can I say? I’m really shallow and I need a pick me up to deal with the fact that tomorrow is Monday.

Whoops… this is what happens when you move your blog posts around and don’t read what you wrote back when you first loaded the post. Tomorrow is Sunday.

Ireland votes to legalize gay marriage

marriage equalityCongratulations to Ireland.  While official results have not been formally tabulated it appears the general referendum on granting full marriage equality rights for gay couples has been overwhelmingly voted by the Irish people (some estimates are saying by 70%).

“It is about removing discrimination. It is about removing inequality. It’s historic, and that’s why I’ll be voting yes,” Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny

While I’m still not an advocate for voting on minority rights, this is an historic milestone for a devoutly Catholic country, which only 20 years ago in 1995 legalized divorce.  Issues of social justice matter to Catholics and not all Catholics see homosexuality as a sin.  Gone are the days that we need to accept the phrase “Love the sinner; hate the sin.”  While the US is a completely different society, I hope the results in Ireland send a chill down Conservatives backs here and we can put this issue to rest in our own country next month when our US Supreme Court (hopefully) rules in favor of marriage equality.

Gay themed summer movies

Gay KissWith summer movie blockbuster commercials now in heavy rotation during every television ad break, I thought I’d give a shout out to some gay themed movies that you may want to check out this summer.  If any of these films catch your attention, contact your local indie theater to see if they plan on showing the film this summer.

Wild Horses opens June 5.  Written and directed by Robert Duvall the film also stars James Franco and Josh Hartnett, and is about a 15-year-old missing-persons case with clues that point to a powerful rancher (played by Robert Duvall), who is grappling with the sudden return of his estranged son (played by James Franco), whom he threw out 15 years ago because he was gay.

Do I Sound Gay? is a documentary David Thorpe created that opens July 10th, which addresses how many gay men grapple with how they sound. Commenters include David Sedaris, George Takei, Margaret Cho and Tim Gunn.

Tom at the Farm (“Tom à la Ferme”) is a psychological thriller from Canada that comes to theaters in the US August 7th.

More affordable homes being built in Boston

Bartlett Place in Dudley Square

Bartlett Place in Dudley Square

Could this be the sign of a new trend in real estate development in Boston?

The Boston Herald is reporting that nearly half (46%) of all new housing that started construction in Boston (January – March) is designated as affordable housing.

According to a housing report released from the city earlier this week these properties are designed for people who make between $50,000 and $95,000; that is an increase of 26% over the same time last year.

That translates into 745 units designated as affordable housing or middle-class housing as compared to 442 high-end or “luxury” units that began during the same time period.  An example of the housing under construction is Bartlett Place in Dudley Square which is a mixed use property that will have 32 of the 60 units designated as affordable.  For more information about projects like Bartlett Place visit courbanize.com.

I hope that this is a trend that continues to help make Boston a more affordable and diverse city welcome to everyone; teachers, social works, artists, etc… as well as engineers, lawyers and doctors. You can read the full article here.

American excellence?

American excellenceI love the United States and think it is a great place to live, but sometimes American hubris gets in the way of what the rest of the world sees / knows. This picture makes the US look like it is still stuck in the 1970s.
