Restaurant review: Brunch at Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar

Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar South BostonMichael Conlon and Eric Aulenback who opened Lincoln to much fanfare in 2012 opened Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar on Broadway in Southie in January 2015, and this past weekend Sergio and I joined a group of friends to try their Sunday brunch. While Loco’s dinner menu serves a variety of tacos, ceviche, grilled fish, and fresh guacamole, the brunch menu adds some really delicious breakfast options worth trying and certainly unique to the neighborhood it calls home.

The brunch menu is divided into Desayuno – breakfast items; Tortas – sandwiches; and Tacos ranging from $9-$15.  We indulged in a couple of different homemade guacamole orders including one with pineapple ($12) and whipped ($12), while both were fresh, I preferred the chunkier texture of the pineapple guacamole.

Omelet Con Tasso $12

Sergio opted for Loco’s Omelet Con Tasso which had cajun ham, oyster mushrooms, onions, goat cheese and was topped with pico de gallo and a side of warm tortillas. His breakfast was delicious and full of flavor, providing a nice spin on a traditional American breakfast.

Burrito de Chorizo $12

Burrito de Chorizo $12

I opted for the Burrito de Chorizo, which had two eggs over easy, potatoes, chorizo, cheese and hot sauce.  As with Sergio’s choice, my breakfast was incredibly flavorful. The runny egg and cheese combined nicely with the heartier ingredients in the burrito and paired well with the spicy Bloody Mary I ordered.

Budin de Pan $13

Budin de Pan $13

Lastly we indulged by ordering the Budin de Pan (Locos take on French Toast). This plate rocked my world and is something I will order when we next visit (because we will be back).  Two pieces of soft white bread are served crispy on the outside with cinnamon and vanilla custard, creamy cheese, fresh berries and dulce de leche, which is what you see atop this pile of decadence.

Loco Taqueria and Oyster Bar serves brunch starting at 10AM on Saturday and Sunday.  Reservations are strongly recommended.

Swoon: Jimmy Garoppolo of New England Patriots

Sharp Dressed ManFriends know that I don’t care for football and in the I fall arrange my grocery shopping each Sunday to coincide when the New England Patriots play so I can avoid the normal weekend crowds.

However, living in Boston, it is hard for even someone like me to completely avoid the endless discussions about Tom Brady’s recent fine and suspension.  I could not care less about the decision, but it has thrust the Patriot’s back up QB, Jim Garoppolo into the spotlight. I have to admit I had no idea who this guy was but I am developing a deep and abiding crush on this hunk.  Does Mr. Kraft have a casting couch for signing quarterbacks? Is it possible the New England Patriots have two of the best looking men in the NFL?  I think I’m in love.

The price of marijuana in all 50 states

You know that a drug needs to be decriminalized when Forbes Magazine writes an article detailing the price of marijuana in every state.

Forbes Magazine compiled data from an online survey and created this humdinger of a map of the fifty states, which they published last week.  My home state, Massachusetts is about $20 more than the national average of $324.  The cost of buying an ounce of high quality cannabis remains the most affordable in Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Alaska (all cost less than $300 per ounce).

American Burger Revival at Boston Chops

Samuel Monsour, Richard Chudy, Boston ChopsLast night Sergio and I joined the throngs of burger fans who came to Boston Chops American Burger Revival, which featured three chefs burgers; Samuel Monsour, Richard Chudy and of course resident chef, Chris Coombs.

On the menu were two burgers featured in the book, LTO Intermezzo which includes raw kale sofrito, smoked heirloom tomatoes, pickled red onions, parmigiano reggiano and Dan’s rib rub. And #Grimetime which included Pop’s Dirty Slaw, frito pie crumble, and what was described on the menu as “way too much KFC buffalo blue cheese dip”.

Sergio and I had the classic a.k.a. The Coombs, a.k.a. Boston Chops Late Night Burger. which is served 7-nights a week after 10PM at the bar only for just $6; tack on just a few bucks more for fries and a cold beverage.

Last night the featured burgers were $9 each and came with Chops addictive, crispy fries.  If you are a burger fan or know someone who is, you may want to consider buying a copy of this book.

Jeb Bush says Christian businesses can refuse to serve gay couples

Jeb BushWow, it didn’t take the Jeb Bush a Republican Presidential candidate and supposed “moderate” to dodge to the right.

Last week Jeb Bush said on CBN News that Christian business owners should not have to provide services for gay weddings if it goes against their religious beliefs.  By that line of thinking those same business owners should not be serving anyone who has been divorced; divorce is mentioned twice as often as homosexuality in the Bible. I’m not stupid and neither are you.  We all know that one’s religious convictions have nothing to do with denying service to gay couples because the list of those who could not / should not be served by this logic would extend to so many groups (Jews, agnostics, etc…) that it would never be allowed – let alone supported by a Presidential primary candidate.

What do you think people’s reactions would be if Jeb Bush said, “Christian business owners should not have to provide services for Jewish weddings.”

I’m not surprised – just disappointed. Many in my family see Gov. Bush as a moderate and reasonable candidate inspite of the fact that he supports issues like this which I personally find offensive, discriminatory and illegal.

Some beards found to have bacteria found in feces

Beard Facial HairI don’t know if this will change people’s perceptions of beards. It certainly makes me think that all the bearded guys I know who are manic about using hand sanitizers may have a bit of a melt down if they read this news report:

A shocking new study has warned that facial hair could be dirtier than a toilet bowl.  According to a group of microbiologists in New Mexico, the rancid bacteria that beards collect could be putting owners’ health at risk. Microbiologist John Golobic, of Quest Diagnostics, swabbed a number of beards searching for bacteria for the study and found that some of the bacteria “are the kind of things that you find in feces.”

“I’m usually not surprised, and I was surprised by this,” he said. “There would be a degree of uncleanliness that would be somewhat disturbing.” Apparently the key to a poo-free beard is to make sure you wash your hands regularly and avoid playing with and twirling the hair.

“Try to keep your hands away from your face, as much as possible,” Golobic added.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

fitness, kyle, healthACTIVE REST DAYS: MOVE IT OR LOSE IT! If you catch yourself trapped in a series of chairs on your day off then you need to get up! Although your body needs rest, staying sedentary for too long will make your muscles feel stiff and immobile – which means when you get back into the gym not only are you likely to feel sore, you’ll be more apt to get injured. Try any of these intense to mild active rest options and keep moving.

2015 Gay Pride season is around the corner

Boston Pride Back Bay block partyWhile Gay Pride celebrations now happen virtually year round, June remains the month when most cities host their traditional LGBT festivals.  What started as a political movement born out of a need to advocate for change has grown to also become a celebration of our lives, families, contributions to society and hopes for a better tomorrow for everyone in our community.

Pride celebrations are a fantastic way to bring our diverse community together and celebrate. Below are dates for some of the many US Pride celebrations this June.

June 5 – 7  Detroit and Milwaukee
June 12-14  Boston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.
June 19 – 21  DenverNew Orleans and Providence
June 26 – 28  Chicago, Houston, NYC, San Francisco, and Seattle

I’m happy to write that I couldn’t list all of the Pride celebrations in the US because there are now so many.  Feel free to give your local Pride celebration a shout out in my comments section no matter where you may be celebrating.

Do you have a Dad bod

Dad BodRecently I’ve noticed a number of articles talking about “dad bods”.  Apparently it started when a Clemson sophomore wrote about the appeal of men with a “Dad Bod”; how freaking Freudian is that?

Dad Bod in the making

Dad Bod in the making

While I think that no matter what your body type, there is someone out there who will find you attractive. All the chatter on the web and personal blogs got me to thinking about the reality that I now have a Dad Bod too.  And while there may be many women (and men) who are attracted to guys who are starting to get soft in the mid-section, I still aspire to a more youthful and fit image of myself; chalk it up to vanity, personal insecurities – whatever.

I have to say that I think this whole Dad Bod thing is very Freudian and probably something more often embraced by heterosexual women.  I think gay men are more likely to have different expectations.  How else can you explain the gay communities obsession with iconic “Daddies” like Tom Ford, Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, etc… and the inevitable “Daddy” dating sites like Daddyhunt.

Regardless, if you too are intrigued by the whole Dad Bod thing you can check out an article on Vox from last week called Dad Bod: What is it and why is everyone suddenly talking about itYou can also see if you have a Dad Bod I suppose by checking out this official Dad Bod chart.Dad Bod
