Dewey Square’s latest mural inspires and gives me hope

Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Rose Kennedy Greenway art, Boston Public Art, Dewey SquareLast month I wrote about the Iranian artist, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, who was asked to paint a mural in Boston’s Dewey Square. The artist has made a name for himself painting large trompe-l’oeils in his homeland and the mural that the public was able to watch him create which spans an impressive 76′ x 70′ is a beautiful addition to the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Called, Spaces of Hope, the mural does not disappoint and is a welcome addition following what I thought was an uninspiring mural it replaced. You can read more about the artist and his first piece of public art here in the US by visiting the Rose Kennedy Greenway website here.

Below I’ve posted the murals in chronological order that have previously graced this facade in Dewey Square.BosArts, boston public art, Mehdi GhadyanlooI’m proud that this Iranian artist was commissioned and given this space to share his work. Good art like Ghadyanloo can help foster dialog and breakdown stereotypes; something I think our country needs to do more of if we are going to come together as one nation.

Rally at State House from 11AM-12PM to speak out against hate

Boston, MassAs a response to a disturbing number of hate crimes that have been reported around the country since the results of the Presidential election, our community is coming together today from 11AM – 12PM to speak out against hate. The event will feature Attorney General Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim

The purpose of the event is to send a message that irrespective of politics or who you supported in the election this kind of behavior is not acceptable and does not represent who we are as a city, state, or country.  massachusetts-rallyI realize this may be difficult for you to attend, but for more information you can contact Norman Abbott at nabbott@adl.org or (617) 406-6382.

11th annual Northeastern underwear run is tonight

As tradition has it, Northeastern’s annual underwear run always falls on the Friday night of parent’s weekend so if you are out and about tonight in the Back Bay don’t be shocked if you see a crowd of several hundred (last year it was about a thousand) students running down Huntington Avenue and Boylston Street in their underwear tonight.

Boston pays tribute to John Michael Gray (one half of the Hat Sisters)

gay bostonOn Sunday, October 16th the Arlington Street Church in Back Bay was filled to capacity as family, friends and members of the Boston LGBTQ community came together for a service in celebration of the life of John Michael Gray (one half of the Hat Sisters).

Mayor Marty Walsh addressed those gathered and a surprisingly personal and touching letter from Gov. Charlie Baker that was sent to Tim O’Connor, in the days following Gray’s death was read. Friends and former colleagues shared personal (and funny) stories about Gray. The emotionally charged celebration paid a fitting tribute to this local icon, who gave so much of himself to the LGBTQ communities of Provincetown and Boston. Following the service Club Cafe closed for a special, private reception that had photographs of the couple’s 30+ years together as the Hat Sisters.  I feel lucky to have meet these two men and wanted to write this post to say thank you to everyone who helped organize and spoke at the tribute. It was incredibly touching and well done. My love and thoughts now turn to his wonderful spouse, Tim.

GoFundMe page was set up after Gray’s death to help Tim O’Connor (Gray’s husband) defray the medical expenses incurred during his treatment. It is still up for anyone who would like to contribute.

Boston named one of the most unequal cities in the US

Boston waterfront skylineThe city of Boston earned a dubious distinction recently by Bloomberg, which ranked all American cities with more than 250,000 people to determine which were the most unequal. Using something called the Gini coefficient, an index that measures the distribution of household income based on 2015 U.S. Census Bureau data, they ranked Miami the most unequal city in the United States.

While I don’t always understand ranking systems like this, I do lend more weight to them when they are published by reputable organizations like Bloomberg. So I was disappointed (but not surprised) to see Boston ranked in the top 10. The silver lining that I take from this is that as an expensive city, it will likely always be a place where there is more inequity than we might like.

I do hold out hope that initiatives Mayor Walsh’s “Boston 2030”, which looks to build 50,000+ new middle income priced homes / units by 2030 and efforts to bring good jobs (e.g. GE relocating their global headquaters to Boston) can help to bring both more economic parity and make it more affordable so anyone (no matter what their career) can feel like they can make Boston their home.
