Election day

Boston PrideIt is election day in the United States today. While most do not have significant elections in this off year, Bostonians are heading to the polls to vote for a new mayor. Mayor Menino will retire next year after serving Boston for the past 20 years, making him the longest serving mayor of a major city in the US; he was first elected in 1993.

I can’t help but feel like this new mayor will be a one-term guy. Similar to “rebound” relationships, after 20+ years, I just don’t see how this new Mayor will be able to step out from under the legacy of Menino so in my mind he’s Boston’s “rebound mayor”.

Red Sox championship parade

Boston Red SoxCalled a “Rolling Rally” by The Boston Globe, today’s Red Sox World Series Championship parade was incredibly pleasant, thanks to unseasonably warm and sunny weather.

There was a relaxed atmosphere in the crowd that poured in from all over New England and beyond to see the parade.  This kid’s sign pretty much sums up Boston’s good fortune in recent years.

I can’t think of any other city in recent years that has dominated in all the major sports leagues, making it truly one of the best places to live if you love sports.

Below are a handful of photos from today’s parade. Boston Red Sox Championship ParadeBoston Red Sox Championship ParadeBoston Red Sox Championship ParadeBoston Red Sox Championship Parade

The sweet sound of victory

Boston Red SoxHere is a video of members of the St. Louis and Boston Symphony Orchestras talking trash.  It gets really interesting when Seiji Ozawa (former Conductor and rabid Red Sox fan makes a surprise appearance and the music begins).  I’m sure this video is making everyone in St. Louis cringe, but it is music to my ears.

P.S. St. Louis, Boston’s World Series celebratory parade has just started. 🙂

Show your Red Sox pride

MFA BostonI love this photo making the rounds on the internet today. For those unfamiliar this is the front entrance to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

The city’s celebratory parade on the Duck Boats will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. I’ve taken a screen capture of the parade route, but for more information link hereRed Sox duck boat parade

Go Sox

BostonLast week BuzzFeed had posted The 23 Most Boston Things To Ever Happen.  It is rather bizarre but a few of the photos had me smiling. Like this image.  I’m very excited about tonight’s game against St. Louis.

Thanks to @MoInMontrose for pointing out this article.

Pay it Forward

random acts of kindnessPerhaps my favorite news story from last week happened to be a local story that went viral when it was published by Huffington Post. Last Tuesday while dining at an unnamed restaurant in Boston a man noticed that two women got very emotional after getting a call from their doctor with news of a diagnosis.  The unnamed gentleman signaled to his waiter that he’d like to pay for his check and the ladies next to him without their knowing.

I never tire of these stories and wish that these nameless Samaritans were more often acknowledged.  Want to read more about the story? HuffingtonPost has a nice article here.

Fan Pier in Boston’s Seaport District

Fan Pier Seaport District BostonOnce the dust from the “Big Dig” settled construction in Boston turned to a section adjacent to Downtown and the Waterfront that had been largely left vacant.  The New York Times wrote an article about this new neighborhood called The Seaport and in particular the development on Fan Pier in their 2007 article, From Empty Lots to Bustling Waterfront.  The recession in 2008 slowed development for a couple years, but construction is in full swing and buildings are being built and approved at a rapid rate not normally seen in Boston.

Fan Pier represents 21 acres mostly of waterfront property with views of Boston Harbor and Downtown.  Restaurants, retail stores, condominiums and office space seem to be opening every month.  If you haven’t been down to this part of Boston in a while you may want to check it out.

Today, Boston’s Fan Pier resembles neither photo from above. The picture on the left shows what the pier looked like September  2012.  The photo to the right shows what the pier will look like after the construction finishes in the next couple years.

Free stuff to do this weekend

Boston MapTake advantage of the fact that there are several free events happening in Boston this weekend and use it as an excuse to get up off your couch and get outside for a bit.

The Boston Book Festival, which started yesterday and runs through Saturday in Back Bay’s Copley Square is a great event to check out.  The Boston Book Festival runs from October 17th-19th.

The world’s largest regatta – The Head of The Charles – is a two day event that draws more than 300,000 spectators and 9,000+ athletes over two days.  Hop the Red Line to come down to Harvard Square or walk / ride over to The Charles and pick a spot to spread out, watch and cheer on these athletes.  The regatta runs from October 19th – 20th.

Each Sunday the SoWa Open market draws thousands who come to peruse the artisan stalls, purchase fresh food from the farmer’s market and eat from the many food trucks that park just down the street.  The 2013 season for the market concludes at the end of this month so come down for one last visit before the season ends. SoWa Open market is open Sunday 10-4pm.

Boston Book Festival Oct 17-19th

‘Typical’ Boston Roommate (by neighborhood)

South End The Apartment List has generated a large (and funny) infographic, teasing Boston area residents by playing up stereotypes that seem strikingly on point.

Link here to see the full infographic that includes similar caricatures for: Allston, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Brighton, Brookline, Cambridge, Charlestown, East Boston, Fenway, Financial District, JP, North End, Somerville, South End, Southie, and West End.

Lighting art installation

Boston University Talking TowersStarting at dusk tonight and running through October 13th each night until 2 AM a public art installation will be visible as a bright-red beam of light will slice the Boston skyline, stretching between two Boston University towers more than a half mile apart.

The afterhours show is part of a temporary public art installation by Florian Dombois. The display is intended to serve as a “metaphorical centerpiece” for TransCultural Exchange’s 2013 conference happening at Boston UniversityEngaging Minds: International Opportunities in the Arts.

Thanks to BostonInno for the tip.

Harvard Square nightlife

Guys DrinkingI can’t recall the last time I said this but last Saturday I grabbed my passport (sorry local joke guys) and headed over to Harvard Square, and I have to admit it was a blast. The next day while I was perusing the Boston Globe online I happened to see an article raving about the nightlife in Harvard Square.

So why is Harvard Square’s nightlife rebounding? According to The Boston Globe article it is due to a concerted effort to help it flourish (Hello Boston Mayoral candidates would you please take note?)

The city of Cambridge wants a more vibrant nightlife and are encouraging more live music venues and asking restaurants to stay open later. The city is also reviewing the current cap on liquor licenses and policies governing outdoor late night dining. Don’t believe me? Read the Boston Globe article, Harvard Square Gets Its Nightlife Groove Back.

Hello Boston – would you please take note?

Boston Chocolate School a must try for chocoholics

Boston Chocolate SchoolThe third Saturday of every month The Boston Chocolate School (yes we even have a school for that here in Boston) hosts a 3 hour class that is the perfect gift for any chocoholic.

I attended September’s class with my good friend and fellow blogger, 40-Something Life, unsure of what to expect.  Our class was hosted by Chef Dorian (shown above with 40-something life blogger and yours truly). Dorian was the Season 2 winner of The Food Network show, Sweet Genius, and after taking his class, I can honestly say he’s also a comic genius.  His class is both entertaining and educational – this man is CRAZY about chocolate.

Boston Chocolate School making trufflesThe first half of the class, which takes place near Downtown Crossing in Boston, is spent learning about chocolate while sipping what might be some of the best hot chocolate in town. I learned things like the only 5 ingredients any chocolate should have:  cocoa liquor (ground cocoa beans), cocoa butter, sugar, soy lecithin and real vanilla. So simple really, but because some large recognizable brands like Hershey don’t use this and add other “stuff” they aren’t technically considered chocolate.

Boston Chocolate School box of trufflesWith the Fall in full swing and colder weather coming, this might make for the perfect Saturday activity if you have even a mild interest in chocolate. Certainly the entertainment value that Chef Dorian brings to the class cannot be stressed enough. Boston Chocolate School classes occur the 3rd Saturday of each month, with the next class on Saturday, October 19th.

More information about this can be found on their website, The Boston Chocolate School.
