Boston ranked one of the best US cities by Conde Nast readers

Boston Public Garden

Earlier this week, Boston was named among the three best large cities in America by Conde Nast Traveler readers. The publication’s 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards ranked Boston No. 3 with Washington, D.C. taking second and Chicago ranked as the best.

More than 750,000 of their readers participated in the online survey between April 1 and June 30, 2020. The publication was very complimentary about my hometown writing, “For one of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston sure has aged with style. To get a quick refresher on our nation’s history, walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile route along a string of historic sites that takes you through the country’s founding. Other activities worth adding to your itinerary include slurping up oysters at Neptune, visiting the eclectic salon-style art display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and catching a ball game at Fenway Park. Just be sure to learn the words to ‘Sweet Caroline’ before you go.

Rounding out the Top 10 list of best large cities are:

4. New Orleans, LA

5. San Antonio, TX

6. New York, NY

7. San Diego, CA

8. Nashville, TN

9. Tucson, AZ

10. St. Petersburg, FL

While I can understand how a few of these cities made the list, I’m left wondering how is New Orleans still considered a large city with a population of less than 400,000 people, and how could cities like Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Seattle be omitted?

Conde Nast Traveler readers also ranked their favorite small cities (places with populations less than 250,000), which you can check out here.

Vintage gay

Much thanks to Peter Miller for once again sharing an amazing photo for this weekly post. The caption at the top of the photo “My wife and I cutting up” was photographed by S. B. DILLEY of Lake City, Minnesota.  Miller shared that on the back of this cabinet photo the following is written:  SUBMITTED AT YOUR REGULAR RATES BY EDNA KING, 2269 FOLWELL STREET, ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like tose share? Email me at bosguymail@gmail.com.

This week on Instagram: doorsofsouthend

The Instagram account Doors of the South End is relatively new, posting images of doors and entrances to buildings and residences in the South End since April.

I can’t really tell you much more about this account other than the fact that I love the photos and wanted to share this account with others who might find this interesting to follow on Instagram.

gay humor, drop the soapHopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up a caption or two of your own. Leave a witty or funny caption as a comment for this post, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

I know I’ve shared this before but I recently stumbled upon the photo andt thought it worthy of a  repost.

“Fresh and clean as a whistle”

Proud boys

Prop 8

Over the weekend thousands of gay men launched a savvy online campaign using the the hashtag of the white supremacist group “Proud Boys”, depicting proud gay men of all ages in a variety of poses. The online activity resulted in making the hashtag #proudboys a top trend on sites like Twitter.

For those unfamiliar with Proud Boys (as I was prior to last week), the group formed during the last Presidential campaign in 2016. The group is considered a far-right, neo-fascist and male-only organization and are labelled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The group actively promotes and engages in political violence in the US and Canada. While the group officially rejects racism, their composition and the words of their members suggest otherwise.

Because of the recent attention and what this violent group propogates, some social media channels have reportedly been blocking this hash tag and mention of the group but as of today, #proudboys was still trending on Twitter so if you have a moment, share with the world how proud you are.

ISO Nutrition app suggestions

realm health and fitness tips from kyle

After months of little to no physical activity through the spring and summer Sergio had enough of my life as a couch potato and gifted me a series of workout sessions with my former trainer who has opened a private gym. I’ll write more about that in the near future. Although I thought I was going to die after my first week back in the gym, I am happy to be working out again. I’ve not seen any change in my weight or physique, but over the past two weeks I have noticed that I’m sleeping better, I have more energy and my attitude has changed.

I am looking for an easy to use nutrition app

Although I’m not about to give up my lifelong love affair with wine and other treats like french fries and ice cream, I would like to find and use an app to help me track what I eat. I’m not interested in Weight Watchers or apps that are tied to weight loss / management programs. I’d prefer something that is independent and lets me track my own progress without any pressure to sign up or join programs. I plan to use this in conjunction with the workout app my trainer uses, Train Heroic, and MapMyRun, which I use to track my cardio.

Scruffy Sunday

sex on a train, men on a train, men in bed

I’m fairly certain I’ve posted this image before but thought it worth re-posting. I’d love to travel by train with Sergio in Europe. It seems incredibly romantic.

This week on Instagram: backinthedaygay

I don’t know much about this account other than that I really enjoy following @backinthedaygay on Instagram. The Bradley Showers ad from 1965 is a good example of what you’ll find on this account which as of October had very few followers (less than 1,700) despite having more than 350 posts.

The Lucky Strike advertisement dating back to 1985 is probably the most current content you’ll find on the account which is complete with WWII era ads and more than a few covers of After Dark, an entertainment magazine that ran from the late 60s to early 80s. Everything on the feed is pg-rated but is filled with innuendo that may seem harmless by today’s standards but undoubtably caught the attention of everyone’s gaydar back in the day.

Saturday morning coffee

I don’t know much about U.K. actor / celebrity Josh Cuthbert other than he knows how to take a photo and apparently enjoys a shot of espresso before diving into a latte, but that is good enough to be featured on this week’s Saturday morning coffee post. Don’t you agree?
