Boston Gay Men’s Book Club meets Monday, April 10

boston gay book club, readingNext Monday Boston’s Gay Men’s Book Club will meet in the Back Bay at the Trident Booksellers & Cafe on Newbury Street to discuss, Pale Fire, by Russian author, Vladimir Nabokov.

Nabokov’s 1962 999-line poem / novel titled “Pale Fire” is written by the fictional poet John Shade, with a foreword written by Shade’s neighbor and academic colleague, Charles Kinbote. Together these elements form a narrative in which both fictional authors are central characters.

Matisse in the Studio opens at the MFA April 9

art, painting, sculpture, Henri Matisse, Museum of Fine Arts BostonApril 4- 8, 2017 MFA members preview
April 9 – July 9, 2017 open to the public

Later this week members of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (MFA) will be able to see the first major international exhibition (and only showing in the US) that examines the importance of Henri Matisse’ s personal collection of objects, offering unprecedented insight into the artist’s creativity. The exhibit opens to the public next Sunday, April 9th and will run through July 9, 2017.

The exhibit includes 36 paintings, 26 drawings, 11 bronzes, 9 cut-outs, 3 prints, and an illustrated book by Matisse along with approximately 39 works from his studio collection (many on loan from private collections and publicly exhibited outside of France for the first time).

Matisse in the Studio – MFA Exhibit

Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869 – November 3, 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century. His mastery and impressive body of work that spans over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

Bucket list of things to do in Boston

christian science plazaFriend and regular reader, Dan K., forward me an article from 2016 entitled, The Boston Bucket List: 33 Things to do before you die, which I had fun reading. Although I think the list should say, 29 Things to do before you die since #4, #25 #26 and #29 do not take place in Boston.

I thought the list was really well done and of the 33 items, I can say that I’ve done 20 of them.  Two of the suggestions, #15: Run the Boston Marathon and #28: Row The Head of the Charles Regatta ain’t ever going to happen, but I think I  should get partial credit for attending and cheering on runners / rowers.

How many of the 33 Things can you say you’ve done and more interestingly, what was left off their list that you would add? I came up with the following:

Attend the annual 4th of July celebration at the Hatch Shell
Attend Shakespeare on the Common
Go to the top of the Boston Custom House Tower
Go to the Beanpot Hockey tournament
Bike / run / walk the Emerald Necklace

What’cha Reading

ReadingI’m currently reading a great book that has captured my imagination called, A Discovery of Witches. It is an historical-fantasy novel by Deborah Harkness, that centers on Diana Bishop, an alchemical history professor at The University of Oxford who is compelled to embrace her magical heritage, which she has ignored and engage in a forbidden romance with a charming vampire.

If you’ve read anything lately that you enjoyed, please share it in the comments section of this blog, because at the rate I’m reading this book, I’ll be looking for suggestions very soon. I’m open to all genres.
