Original Content Required

original-content-required-poetryI really enjoy poetry even though a lot of times I don’t always appreciate or understand what I’m reading. Last year Matt from boy culture blog referenced this tumblr site which includes the work from the handsome guy shown above. Apologies, but I don’t know his name. However, a few months ago I started following him and placed his website on my blogroll in the right margin.  –>

Note that both his poetry and many of the images he has on his tumblr site are not safe for work so be careful who you share this with and where you are if you choose to visit his site.  Below is a work in progress that he shared earlier this week which I really like. I’m curious to read the finished work. poem, poetry, gay poet

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, shirtless manEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: A bus driver is going down a one way street in the wrong direction while texting on his phone. However, he is doing nothing illegal. How is that even possible?

The photograph above is one of a series from  Tom Bianchi: Fire Island Pines Polaroids 1975–1983 published by Damiani. You can read an article on Slate in 2013 when they first wrote about the series. As you might expect from Bianchi some of the photos are not safe for work, but you can read more here.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post? Bloomberg ranks Massachusetts most innovative (again)

massachusettsThe Bloomberg US Innovation Index ranked Massachusetts (again) as the most innovative state in the nation. With California (again) coming in second.

Bloomberg scores each state on a 0-100 scale across six equally weighted metrics: R&D intensity; productivity; high-tech density; concentration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) employment; science and engineering degree holders; and patent activity.  Massachusetts has enjoyed a faster recovery from the last recession than most states and now boasts 2.9% unemployment rate, leaving it tied for second-best in the country – as compared to the 4.6%  national average.

While most may look to or think of Silicon Valley when it comes to innovation because of companies like Apple and Google, Bloomberg index is measured by the number of companies rather than market capital, rewarding Massachusetts for its breadth over California’s tech giants. This point impresses me even more because when you compare the relative size of both states.

General Electric Co.’s announcement earlier this year that it would move its headquarters to Boston amid rancor over tax increases in Connecticut helps to illustrate how Massachusetts widened its lead.

Devon is someone I consider a friend. We met a few years back during his first summer working at the Boatslip in Provincetown. He is friendly, witty and a lot of fun – although you can probably surmise that just by watching his video post. Check out and follow Devon’s Instagram account, and be sure to leave a comment or two on some of your favorites posts.

Greece – A High School Musical

Ryan Landry, Boston Fringe TheaterRyan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans have already announced their Spring show in Boston will be Greece: A High School Musical.

The website promises chariot races, vengeful gods and plenty of teenage angst as well as a stellar cast of Grecian Greasers ready to dance and slay you with laughter. What happens when Zeus’ only daughter is caught obsessing on the petty goings on of mere mortals? He sends her to a public school. No sooner does she arrive on Earth when she meets a gorgeous Trojan and all Hades breaks loose. Add a tangled web of love stories that rivals A Midsummer Nights Dream and you get the picture.

While the Gold Dust Orphan’s spring production won’t open until early May, tickets are now available for sale.

And the moral of the story is…

My father loves to pass along funny stories. I think of them as updated bedtime stories since they are usually made up or untrue, and I assume my father likes them for the same reason like this one, which he forward last week.

cowFirst-year students at the Purdue School of Veterinarian Medicine were attending their first anatomy class with a real dead cow. They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a white sheet.

The professor started the class by telling them, “In Veterinary medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a doctor. The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving an animal’s body.” For an example, the professor pulled back the sheet, stuck his finger into the butt of the cow, withdrew it, and stuck his finger in his mouth. “Go ahead and do the same thing,” he told his students.

The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes, but eventually took
turns sticking a finger in the butt of the dead cow and, sucked on it… followed by assorted gagging, retching and spitting, etc.

When everyone had finished wiping their faces, the Professor looked at them and said, “The second most important quality is observation. I stuck in my middle finger and sucked on my index finger.  Now learn to pay attention. Life is tough but it’s even tougher if you’re stupid.

Boston is getting wicked expensive

Boston Back BayWhile it is no secret that Boston is an expensive city to live in as compared to most of the United States, Boston Magazine article “Boston Is Getting Really Expensive” highlights just how expensive.

Boston’s cost of living is 39.7% above the U.S. average, with groceries and healthcare running 26% above average, while median household income remains on par with the rest of the country. According to the article more than 1/3 of the city’s homeowners work 4 months or more each year just to pay for housing.

Boston’s condo costs range dramatically, depending on location. Hover over each neighborhood below to see costs per square foot in 2015.

PROPRIETARY ANALYSIS OF CLOSED MARKET RATE TRANSACTIONS. ANALYSIS EXCLUDES AFFORDABLE AND RESTRICTED HOUSING UNITS AND FORECLOSURES.

The Boston Magazine article correctly pointed out that in the long run Boston will lose if more is not done to make the city more affordable. Our political, business and community leaders need to stop thinking small and learn to act more boldly. As Boston launches its major planning effort, a.k.a. “Imagine Boston 2030”, regional planning must drive the discussion.

Men in kilts

men fashion, dirk caber, shirtless manI’m unsure what it is about the kilt but gay men have an affinity for this article of clothing so I’m creating a new weekly post showcasing men in kilts.

For this inaugural post I’m featuring a photo of a friend. For those who don’t know Dirk, he has an affinity for the kilt. His appreciation for wearing a kilt has now even spilled over to his partner, Jesse, who has now taken to wearing them with greater frequency.

Check out their photo together at Toys for Joys Boston this past December.
