Come down to the South End (450 Harrison Ave. to be exact) to meet local artists and view their work from 5-9PM tonight. The First Friday of each month more than 60 artists open their studios in the 450 Harrison building making it easy to walk around, socialize and see artists in their studios no matter what the weather is like outside.

Local galleries in the South End also support First Fridays by remaining open like, Boston Sculptor’s Gallery at 486 Harrison Avenue.  After chatting with local artists and viewing some of their work head over to one of your favorite South End restaurants to grab a cocktail and dinner. If you need any suggestions, give me a shout and I’m happy to play the role of concierge.

You can get more information about this monthly event by visiting the SoWa First Fridays Facebook Page.

The Show Me State is now the Marry Me State

Missouri Marriage EqualityMarriage Equality comes to the “Show Me State” Missouri

From the HRC website:  Today Judge Ortrie D. Smith ruled against Missouri’s state constitutional amendment banning marriage equality, making the Show Me State the latest state to see such a ban struck down in court since the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its historic marriage rulings last June.  In Lawson v. Kelly, the ACLU of Missouri sued the state on behalf of same-sex couples who argue that Missouri’s ban on marriage equality violates the U.S. Constitution.  For more information link here.

Furry Friday

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaser, rodinEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, feel free to get help – share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle:  If you were running a race, and you passed the person in 2nd place, what place would you be in now?

Heading to Cayman Islands this winter

travel, Caribbean

Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Island

Lest you think I don’t practice what I preach, earlier this week Sergio and I booked a trip so we can escape from Old Man Winter.  Earlier this year I wrote, How to survive a Boston winter.  The first post in that series suggested that you book a trip prior to the holiday season so you aren’t stretched by the Christmas credit card crunch and so you can score cheaper airfare.

Caribbean, Cuba, Jamaica, mapWe were able to get great airfare to Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean so we booked a trip. If you feel like demands at work would prevent you from getting away, keep in mind my previous post Please go away – often and book a trip to get away – even if only for a couple nights.  Great airfares out of Boston remain available to warm destinations like Florida, Puerto Rico and Caribbean.

Please go away – often

VacationOxford Economics released a report in September that found Americans are taking fewer vacation days than ever before.  In 2013, Americans took an average of 16 days of vacation, compared to 20.3 days in 2000.  Taking fewer earned vacation days translated into nearly 170 million lost paid days off. Interestingly the report found those who forfeited vacation time did not receive better raises or bonuses.  The message I take from this is:

Plan Your Vacation Today

Anyone who reads this blog, knows that I love traveling and I love spending time with friends and family.  If you haven’t the opportunity to get away, plan a stay-cation and enjoy time away from work. You might be surprised to learn that 1) Your colleagues miss you and appreciate you more; 2) You feel refreshed.

Arrest me – please!

leather, uniform, rubber, fetishI think I need to book a flight to Norway and engage in civil disobedience.  Much thanks to blogger, Stan, for sharing this on his blog. I couldn’t help but swipe it.

Boston on tumblr

Boston Public GardenThe Boston Globe now has a tumblr page that encourages the public to upload photos of Boston. Some of these pictures are really beautiful and worth checking out.  If you’ve never been to Boston, the images will provide some wonderful views of our neighborhoods, architecture and people.  If you are far from home, this tumblr page will certainly make you nostalgic and want to come back and visit. Feel free to share your photos on the Globe’s tumblr site – they make it very easy to do, just clicking a couple of buttons.  I’ve also added this to my blogroll in the right margin of my blog so you can check it as often as you like.

Harvard Art Museums

Six years and $350 million dollars later, the Harvard art museums – the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler – have now been combined under one roof.  The Harvard Art Museums as they are being called open to the public later this month, starting Sunday, November 16th.

The expansion gives the combined museums 40% more gallery space to house their 250,000-piece art collection.  Not surprising, Harvard spared no expense with this thoughtful redesign, hiring Pritzker Prize winning architect, Renzo Piano, to create an impressive new home for Harvard’s most prized artwork.  The new Calderwood Courtyard is a great example of Piano’s work, which brings plenty of natural light through the glass-and-steel roofing and upper-level glass walls.   I’m looking forward to seeing this space open to the public and encourage you to check out the Harvard Art Museums.
