Are you new to Boston or just in need of meeting some new people? The Welcoming Committee is hosting their Newbie Party tonight from 6:30 to 9 pm at The Beat Hotel (13 Brattle St., Cambridge) in Harvard Square. By the way, The Beat Hotel is a bar – not a hotel. It is The Welcoming Committee not the come and sleep with me committee 🙂
These regularly hosted gatherings give you a chance to learn more about The Welcoming Committee, the activities they organize in and around Boston as well as a chance to socialize and connect with a group of fun and friendly people. Curious but shy? Shoot me a note in the comments section, and I can tell you more about the group and tonight’s Newbie Party.
The Paramount in Beacon Hill has been serving delicious meals since 1937. In February 2012 they opened a second location in South Boston. The “new” location has a similar layout, executive chef, hours and menu. The casual dining option nicely compliments the personality of Southie, offering very good, affordable meals in a comfortable setting.
While you might want to try lunch or dinner at The Paramount, we recently indulged in breakfast, which is available 7-days a week starting at 8:00 a.m. with plates reasonably priced from $5-$9. Although the helpful staff is quick to clean, there is no table service so when you enter the restaurant walk up to the kitchen counter to place your order.
I ordered huevos rancheros $9; two fried eggs, homemade salsa, sliced avocado, with three grilled corn tortilla. The breakfast was satisfying but the salsa lacked any spice (then again I ordered this in Southie where many think mustard is spicy). Sergio ordered a breakfast sandwich for $6 which (like my plate) came with a generous scoop of breakfast potatoes that are crispy on the outside and nicely salted.
In the name of ‘research’ we also ordered a plate of blueberry pancakes $8.50. The large stack of three pancakes are served with a liberal dollop of butter and a healthy sprinkling of confectioners sugar. Two words describe these pancakes, “mmm-mmm good”.
The Paramount South Boston is located at 667 East Broadway and is open 7-days a week. They open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 10:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Last week The Walt Disney Company gave notice to the Boy Scouts of America that it will pull all funding to the group starting in 2015 because of their membership policy that bans gay leaders.
Scouts for Equality, which says it works to end discrimination within the BSA, praised Walt Disney World for ending local support for the BSA’s Central Florida Council. Disney now joins Alcoa, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Caterpillar, Major League Soccer, Merck, Intel and UPS as companies who have ended partnerships with the Scouts because of their policy banning gay leaders.

Late last week I mentioned that Liza Minnelli and Alan Cumming will perform a show at The Crown and Anchor on Monday, August 4th. Over the weekend the show sold out and a second performance (same night) at 9:30 p.m. has been added. Tickets may be purchased here, www.onlyatthecrown.com.
UPDATE: I’ve been told this show has now sold out as well. You can’t say that I didn’t give you a heads up.
For the first time in Boston’s history, organizers of South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade said they wold invite the LGBT group, MassEquality, to walk in their parade. The deal is being brokered by incoming Mayor Marty Walsh, but it includes an important caveat: MassEquality, cannot wear T-shirts or hold signs that include the word gay or refer to sexual orientation. My reaction to the deal, “Are you kidding me? Is this 1994?“
The time for keeping quiet has passed.
This would have been an interesting offer back in 1994 when then incoming Mayor Tom Menino was speaking as an advocate (for the first time) for the LGBT community, but the times have changed. Parade organizers steadfast refusal and isolation of the LGBT community casts an ugly shadow on their event and this latest ‘offer’ does little to improve their image or that of their Irish heritage.
MassEquality issued their response shortly after the Boston Globe published the story, which you can read here, but I think is summed up in this quote from their response, “LGBT people should not have to silence who they are to celebrate other parts of their identities.“
What do you think?
It is hard for me to believe, but YouTube has been around for nearly a decade. I’m contemplating creating a regular post that includes what I’ll refer to as (insert tongue in cheek) ‘vintage ‘tube’.
This video was played often at Club Cafe in Boston and at many other gay bars I would presume. I love Daft Punk, I love this song, and I love these guys. Do you remember this vintage ‘tube?
Have a great Saturday night.
