BosGuy rant: Arizona

2281Move over Alabama, it appears that Arizona would like to be the poster child for intolerance and religious zealotry in the United States.

Not quite content with their checkered past with regards to race relations; remember how Arizona lost their bid to host the 1993 Superbowl because their refusal to recognize MLK day or the xenophobic immigration legislation from 2010 that raised eyebrows and the ire of Latinos?  This past month Arizona turned its bigoted gaze on ‘the gays’ when the state legislature passed SB1062, legalizing discrimination under the guise of religious freedom.

I’m not fooled by Gov. Jan Brewer’s veto of this bill. Pressure from politicians (from her own party), the business community and the public made Gov Brewer’s veto inevitable.  Well done Arizona – you’re quickly becoming our most backward and bigoted state.

Rio de Janeiro Carnaval 2014

Rio Carnival“Carnaval” a.k.a. Carnival in Brazil starts tomorrow. While there are many parties celebrating  the start of lent, it seems to me all other parties look pitifully small when compared to Rio de Janeiro.

BosGuy style tip

trinity-eldredget-tie-knotIn cities across the US, charities will be hosting a variety of fundraisers this spring.  Some of these events will be very casual like the upcoming Taste of the South End here in Boston on Tuesday, March 4th, while others will be more formal – possibly requiring you to step up your game.

While nobody will fault you for a full Windsor knot, you can distinguish yourself and make your tie really stand out by selecting a less traditional tie knot.  While there are many to choose from, I really like the Trinity and Eldredge knots. Thanks to Alex Krasny and his YouTube videos you can watch how to tie a trinity tie knot and eldredge tie knot.

Things that make BosGuy go hmm…

things that make bosguy go hmm...Frack U Mr. Rex Tillerson.  Interesting you would put the well being of your horses over the well being of others.

Why is it that whenever I hear ExxonMobil in the news it always makes me wish the company would just go away.

BosGuy cooks shrimp scampi with linguine

Shrimp scampi is an easy and quick meal that anyone can make if you have two pans and the right ingredients – which fortunately are easy to buy and not expensive.  I served this dinner following an arugula salad with tomatoes, walnuts and cranberries that I paired with a delicious sauvignon  blanc (Petit Bourgeois that Brix sells for $12.99).

Ingredients for the shrimp scampi include:  1/2 lb of linguine, 12 shrimp, 1/2 cup of white wine (I used a sauvignon blanc), 2 tablespoons of butter, 1 teaspoon of lemon zest, 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley, 4 garlic cloves sliced thinly, a dash of salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes (for some heat – optional). Not shown is the olive oil I coated the pan with to start the cooking.

Start by boiling water for your pasta in one pan and adding oil in a frying pan and turning the heat to medium high. After a minute, add the sliced garlic and butter and stir to prevent the ingredients from burning.

Once you smell the garlic cooking and it slightly browns add seasonings: salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and red pepper flakes and the shrimp then cover the pan. Give the pan a good shake and flip the shrimp after a minute or two. Once the shrimp is pink on both sides, add the parsley, turn off stove and remove from heat but keep covered.

When the pasta is done add it to the pan; coat the pasta with the wine and butter sauce so all the flavors are absorbed and will flavor the pasta.BosGuy cooksThen plate and serve. The longest part of this dinner is waiting for the water to boil for the pasta and assembling the ingredients. My total cooking time was about 20 minutes and the cost of this dinner (which by the way serves two) was approximately $7.00.

Wine flow chart

Wine Flow ChartLast week I posted What kind of wines do you preferBased on the feedback I received, I assume many of you are like me and love wine so I wanted to share this funny ‘wine flowchart’ that my brother shared with me last week.

I suppose the only question left in this flowchart is what kind of wine will you pour yourself? Since it is winter, I’ll probably grab a bigger red to cozy up with this evening.

The Trophy Room

FritzThe Trophy Room (a.k.a. The Old Fritz) has a Facebook page that you may want to check out and like if you’re into that sort of thing.  The owners of The Chandler Inn will be reopening a newly remodeled space that will operate as a bar and restaurant in the near future.  That new space will be called The Trophy Room. Currently their Facebook page alludes to a spring opening and shares artist renderings of the design and decor you can expect to see when they open for business.
