Suddenly it makes sense

wrestlingEarlier this week Joe. My. God. blog noted that wrestling will be reinstated for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo.  Pity this won’t be at Sochi if for no other reason than I’d like to see a bunch of homphobic, sexually repressed Russians cheering on their guy as he simulates gay sex wrestles.

Sergio is off to Brazil

Cheers SergioSergio is flying down to Brazil today to help his family, and he will be gone for about a a week.  I am happy he can make this quick visit, but I’m still doing my best not to mope around the house. I always hate saying good bye to him and feel like I miss him most in the hours leading up to and following his departure, which is kind of odd because this wasn’t the case when we first met and he was a flight attendant. However, since leaving the travel industry, I’ve become accustomed to having him around and his presence will be missed.  😦

Restaurant review: Abby Lane

abby lane bostonAbby Lane is a 200-seat restaurant and bar located in the heart of Boston’s Theater District at 255 Tremont Street.  It opened in November 2012 to much fanfare with a sleek new interior that was designed by HGTV designer and Massachusetts native, Taniya Nayak. Chef Jason Santos who is still perhaps best known for his time on television’s popular cooking competition, Hell’s Kitchen, is the executive chef.

The menu at Abby Lane offers a bit of something for everyone but with only approximately a half dozen main plates, we turned our attention to the rest of the menu that is divided into small plates, soups & salads, sandwiches & burgers and pizzas. With some helpful tips from the bar staff we settled on the Shitake and Goat Cheese Pizza ($13) and the Abby Burger ($14).

Abby Lane Boston Pizza and BurgerWhile the bar was comfortable and the staff helpful and friendly, we both agreed that the food was not memorable.  Even though the pizza looked delicious when served, the crust was bland and the toppings lacked the flavors we expected. The burger also looked delicious, served with fried onion rings and toppings piled high but unfortunately the bun was a bit stale, the ground beef lacked the grilled flavor I had hoped for and tasted a bit dry.

Despite a disappointing dinner, the look and location of Abby Lane ensure that it will be quite successful, serving crowds each evening that come for a quick bite either before or after attending a show at one of the Theater District’s many play houses.  I’m just not sure that I’ll be among them in the future.

9-11 remains a sad day

911September 11th remains a somber day. More than a decade later, I’m still transported to my Back Bay apartment when I first watched a commercial airliner fly into the second World Trade Center building in New York City.  I wasn’t able to process what I saw on TV that morning.  And in the days that followed I’d continue to struggle, realizing my good friend had been on the plane I had watched crash into the World Trade Center.

As I spent the next week with Sergio and our mutual friends Becky & Lisa, cleaning out his apartment to send his belongings back to his elderly parents who lived in the north of England, and to friends both near and far –  I kept replaying in my mind both the scene from TV of the crash as well as our last time together just a few days earlier.

Time hasn’t quite erased that image of the plane’s collision – nothing ever will – but it doesn’t dominate my thoughts the way it once did. However, each year at this time I inevitably think of my friend – thankful that I’d had the chance to be his friend and sad to think how our friendship was cut short.

Gay Christian Mingle spoof

Gay Christian Mingle spoofThis Gay Christian Mingle spoof is making the rounds on the web and I couldn’t resist hopping on the bandwagon and sharing this too. I love Chad’s profile that says, “Love the three G’s – God, Glamour and Gals!”  Watch this humorous clip and don’t worry, it is totally safe for viewing while at work.

Only in America: Iowa issues gun permits to the blind

Iowa legalizes guns for the blindAmerica’s perverse notion that public safety can only be enhanced by putting more guns on the street never ceases to amaze me. This latest news that Iowa is now issuing gun permits to the legally blind seems insane, but fortunately Michael Barber, a blind man who was interviewed was able to clear up this baffling mystery.  Barber explains, “When you shoot a gun, you take it out and point and shoot, and I don’t think eyesight is necessary.

If I didn’t know any better, I would think this is a Saturday Night Live spoof, but sadly this is just another example of how insane my country’s pro-gun laws have now become.  You can read more about this here.
