Charles River jogging and bike paths

Charles River Jogging PathEver since the weather started to get pleasant here in Boston, the Charles River has been flooded with foot and bike traffic.  The 17+ miles of walking / bike paths that follow the contours of the Charles River offer runners and cyclists alike some fantastic views of Boston and Cambridge.  However, you need not commit to such a long workout and can cross back and forth between the many bridges that crisscross the Charles River.

If you live in the area and have not downloaded one of the many maps available feel free to print a copy of this map to give you incentive and to start your spring training so to speak, Marathon Sports Charles River Map.

Chef Ryan Kelly named Executive Chef at BoMA

BoMA RestaurantFollowing rumors reported earlier this year by Eater Boston, BoMA Restaurant Bar & Grill announced today that Chef Ryan Kelly (Clio, Tonic Canary Square) has been named the new Executive Chef.

Chef Kelly’s new menu is now available and features small bites and casual options, including a whole section of tacos, pizzas, burgers and fish & chips that are moderately priced between $8-$15. Entrees will continue to include familiar dishes, some with a slight Asian influence ranging between $15-$25.

BoMA Restaurant + Bar is located at 1415 Washington St in the South End

Highest paid public employee (by state)

Highest Paid Public EmployeesHere is an interesting map of the US that has been making the rounds on the internet.  It depicts the highest-paid public employee by state.  You’ll note that in 40 states it is a football, basketball or hockey coach who earns the most.   Hmm… further proof of how sports-obsessed Americans are no doubt.

SpeakEasy Stage: In The Heights

speakeasy stage bostonIn The Heights, the winner of four 2008 Tony Awards, is the current production from The SpeakEasy Stage Company that opened May 10th and runs through June 16th.  The musical will grab your attention with large dance numbers set to rap and hip hop rhapsodies all set in NYC’s Latino neighborhood, Washington Heights, in the summer of 2003.  The story centers around members of this closely knit neighborhood and how their lives are entwined with the neighborhood they all call home.

Boston TheaterIf you require a bit more incentive to purchase tickets to this show, I’ll give you three reasons: Diego Klock-Perez (Usnavi) and Jorge Barranco (Sonny) who’s lives center around their barrio bodega.  Their rap and dance scenes are among the best in the show.  However, I was distracted every time the incredibly handsome actor, Jared Dixon (Benny), stepped on stage and his shirtless scene on the balcony at the opening of the second act alone makes this show worth its money, but fortunately there is more to offer than these three men and the entire cast really does deserve credit for pulling off some intricate dance and musical numbers.  This is a great date option or night out with friends.

You may purchase tickets at The Calderwood Pavilion box office on Tremont Street in the South End or by phone, 617-933-8600 or online at SpeakEasyStage.com.

Kmart will let you ship your pants

Kmart_LogoKmart has suddenly got cheeky with their YouTube “Ship My Pants” video.

Although it is 100% safe, someone with a great sense of humor noticed how similar “ship my pants” and “shit my pants” sounds – especially when said over and over again.  Take a listen and enjoy.

Minnesota says yes to marriage equality and Michelle Bachman goes on suicide watch

Minnesota Same Sex MarriageAlthough its petty of me, I love this has happened in the state that Michele Bachmann represents in Congress.  For those not familiar with her, first let me say “lucky you”. Bachmann has spent much of her career blaming natural disasters, terrorist attacks, etc… on the “Gay Agenda”.  I’m pretty sure if a dictionary was a picture book (probably something Bachmann would endorse), if you looked up words like homophobe, racist, or xenophobe, you’d find this demented Congresswoman smiling back at you with a vacant / kind of crazy look in the eye – unsure of what I mean check out her photo below from Newsweek.

So it is with a bit of glee that I say bravo to Minnesota for joining the 21st Century and moving a step closer to legalizing same sex marriage, and with a bit of spite that I suggest putting Michele Bachmann in a padded room.  Let’s just say we are going to keep her under surveillance out of concern she may hurt herself when her tiny brain realizes what’s happened back in Minnesota.

Late night dining at Uni is a must try

uni-sashimi-barUni Sashimi Bar, an upscale Japanese restaurant owned by Ken Oringer, transforms into a late night, cheap eats noodle bar at 11pm each Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The late night dining option attracts a young, hip crowd, making it tough to get a seat if you don’t arrive early since seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Uni Ramen MenuKen Oringer’s sashimi bar, Uni, is located downstairs from Clio in the Eliot Hotel on the corner of Massachusetts & Commonwealth Ave.  The late night Ramen menu meticulously written in colored markers on cardboard combined with the flickering candlelight in this subterranean dining room, gives off a clandestine vibe and energy I don’t often see here in Boston.

Ken OringerI’m a noodle novice but even I was able to navigate the colorful menu with some helpful tips from the handsome waitstaff.  Three bowls of ramen for $10 were featured (traditional, short rib & kimichi and gou kai – vegetarian).  I opted for the short rib & kimichi (shown above) that arrived quickly in a beautiful steaming bowl with a poached egg that I poked to let the yoke mingle with the flavorful broth and tender chunks of short rib.

Ken OringerMy friend Zoe and I also tried the Pork Bun and Shishito Peppers.  The pork slider as I referred to it was out of this world delicious. The sriracha aioli, pickles and soft bun all work magic making the pork belly so good I could easily order a half dozen. If you go – you *must* try an order.  Also tasty were the plate of  fried sweet peppers, but nowhere near as addicting as the Pork Bun.

Ken OringerIn the name of “research” we opted to try Uni’s ice cream sandwich of the night, which proved equally messy to eat as the Pork Bun, but every bit as delicious. The raspberry and lemon flavors added a refreshing end to this amazing dinner.

Reservations are not available so arrive early. This tiny Back Bay restaurant barely seats 40 and fills quickly so give your name to the host and grab a drink at Clio’s bar to wait to be seated when Uni reopens at 11:00pm; its worth the wait and you’ll enjoy some excellent people watching – I promise.

Uni is located inside Clio Restaurant at the Eliot Hotel at 370 Comm. Ave.
