Furry Friday

Furry FridaySince St. Patrick’s Day is later this weekend I tried to find a photo of a ridiculously handsome guy in some sort of stereotypical Irish hat or dress like I did for this week’s Temptation Tuesday post, but I failed.

I trust you will approve this non-Irish themed Furry Friday.

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.

If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: What do the following words have in common?
IRISH  –  MASTER  –  ROUSE  –  CHAMPION  –  VIOLENT

Boston restaurant week: March 17-22 and 24-29

winter_restaurantweek_2013With more than 200 participating restaurants in the Boston area participating it is hard not to notice that Restaurant Week (or should I say weeks) is about to start, running from March 17-22 and 24-29th.  Three course dinners cost $38.13 and $20.13 for lunch.   If this is your first time making reservations during Restaurant Week, consider the following tips or guidelines.

– Not all participating establishments are worth visiting. Restaurants serve 3 courses from a Prix Fixe menu for $38.13.  If most of the restaurant’s main plates are less than $20.00 you are not likely paying more than you would normally and being forced to order from a limited menu.

– Restaurant Week is designed to bring crowds into restaurants during a time that is normally quiet.  To avoid the crush and not compromise on the service, make reservations for Monday or Tuesday; it’ll be a better experience for you.

– Select a restaurant you have never had a chance to visit. Use the opportunity to explore new places.  You may be pleasantly surprised and discover a new favorite.  There certainly are a lot of new options here in the South End.

Do you Uber

Uber BostonUber is a car / taxi service that you download as an app to your phone and now services more than 30 cities in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia.

The beauty of Uber is how easy it is to request a driver in the form of a taxi, town car or SUV but what I really appreciate is  the direct billing and the ability to track the vehicle that is coming to pick you up.  By contrast if you try to call for a taxi in Boston you are likely to spend several minutes waiting for someone to pick up who speaks to you rudely and then evades your question on when the cab might appear.  More often than not, I have to call back once or twice to find out if a cab is coming.

The irony is that our dumb taxi industry in Boston could easily undercut Uber by providing some of these same services (e.g. gps tracking of your reserved taxi).  But in lieu of innovating, Boston Cab Dispatch made news earlier this week when the BBJ reported they were suing Uber.  I hope the courts side with Uber because the taxis in Boston while far better than they use to be still leave a lot to be desired.

Squatty Potty

Squatty PottyThis image was recently tweeted and I thought I’d share the advert which was in OK Magazine in the UK. Not only is the image funny, but you have to love the promo code “get going”.

Intrigued, I felt compelled to do some basic market research and found an instructional video from Squatty Potty, which is professionally put together and not the least bit entertaining but actually kind of interesting in a very gross way. However, one can giggle all one likes by watching some of the ridiculous spin-off videos on YouTube from people eager to tell you all about the squatty potty.

The Nope

I love how Cosmopolitan has celebrated the new Pope.

The Nope

The white smoke has emerged from the chimney and a new pope was chosen in Vatican City…and at Cosmo, this was the first thing that came to our minds.

Pope Francis, this one’s for you!

Suddenly it makes sense

suddenly it makes senseKeeping with the theme of my previous post, I figured it was time to publish another “suddenly it makes sense”.  I can’t think of a better way to drive home the point that there are elements in all sporting events that are more gay than an episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

Aquitaine Boston’s new lunch menu is worth trying

Recently Aquitaine in the South End expanded their lunch menu, which they serve Monday thru Friday starting at 11:30am.  The menu has updated some of the restaurant’s best sellers like the Salade Nicoise ($13.95) and the Shrimp Salad Tartine Sandwich ($12.95).  Other popular new items include the Ploughman’s Lunch, which comes with a house pate, cheese, house pickles and a fresh baguette ($12.95), as well as the “MLT” marinated mushrooms, roasted tomatoes, lettuce and herb goat cheese on toasted sour dough bread ($9.95).

Aquitaine has retained their lunch special which includes the choice of a soup and sandwich or salad as well as a soda or coffee for $12.95.  For lunch we tried the turkey club, onion soup and a side of fries.

Both meals proved to be delicious and the service we received from our waitress, Ludgiie, was both prompt and professional making it easy to get in and out of Aquitaine with enough time to get back to the office quickly.  The newly expanded menu offers patrons a large selection  that includes breakfast items, salads, classic plates as well as delicious sandwiches.  I’d definitely recommend checking out this place for lunch the next time your contemplating where to go. Slamming the closet door in American sports

queer_scrumMany American children grow up idolizing athletes who play professional sports.  Recently, there has been a lot of conversation about homophobia in American sports so I was intrigued when I saw Conor Gaughan’s article on HuffPost Gay, Out of the closet and into the locker room: The business of coming out in the pros.

The growing acceptance of our small minority in the US means that it is not a question of “if” someone comes out but “when” and all signs seem to point to a time sooner rather than later – in spite of some senseless comments by professional athletes who are “uncomfortable” about having a homosexual in their locker room – to which my only response is “you’ve got to be kidding me.”

Would there be a financial incentive to cash out because of their status as an out professional athlete who is playing in a major sport in the US? Perhaps but earlier this month I wrote about Ben Cohen (a retired professional rugby star) who commented that a fellow competitor, Gareth Thomas, was rumored to have been dropped by Reebok because he is gay.  It is hard to say exactly what the response would be for that first athlete to come out but it seems like for the first time advertisers and media are ready and you know what, I think America is too.

Five year anniversary

fiveLast week I passed a professional milestone when I hit my five year anniversary with my current employer.

I’ve never worked at a firm for five years, always finding a graceful exit to work for another company after 3-4 years had passed.  I’ve enjoyed the first five years and have learned an awful lot.  I’ve also been able to do some amazing things like meeting President Clinton last spring in Boston, but who can say what is around the corner.

How long you have worked at your current job?  Does five years sound like a long time to you or have you been in your current role for far longer?

Gay Haiku by Joel Derfner

Joel DerfnerI had never heard of Joel Derfner’s book, Gay Haiku, until I stumbled upon it on Joe My God last week.  The book was originally published in 2005, but has recently been turned into an iPhone App that shares Derfner’s haikus with you.  The image included in this post is just one example of the humorous poetry you can expect to find.

Should you be interested in purchasing the book, I’d suggest you contact your local LGBT bookstore or you may purchase it on Amazon.com, here.

Party in aisle 15

gay humorThis isn’t exactly the reason why this popular chain is often referred to as homo depot, but then again its not exactly doing anything to discredit the nick name either. I’ll meet you in aisle 15.

Distribution of wealth in US

Wealth Inequality in USTrue to form, I feel often that I’m among the last to see viral videos.  This six and a half minute clip already had nearly 2.3 million views at the time I posted this, but I wanted to share it with people. I thought the difference between the actual and the perceived distribution of wealth in the US was startling.

I’m not suggesting we should all be paid equally or disregarding the hard work that has allowed many Americans to become more financially successful.  I suppose I’m posting this video and these images, because I’m wondering what type of society do we want to emulate; our current reality; our perceived reality; or our ideal? The charts shown in this video (and below) would make me think I’m looking at countries like Brazil and India – not the United States.Wealth Distribution in the US chartI’m not looking for anyone to find the answers to these questions. I’m not quite so naive as to think one political party in our country has the ability or will power to make the changes, but it is time to have a frank discussion.

Watch the video below and let me know if this troubles you as well.

Temptation Tuesday

St. Patrick's DaySince St. Patrick’s Day is in a few days, I thought I’d add this lucky charm to the growing list of weekly temptations.  Good thing he’s so handsome otherwise I’d be ticked about the mess he’s made in the bed.
