SpeakEasy Stage: Other Desert Cities

speakeasy stage bostonLast week I went to see The SpeakEasy Stage production of Other Desert Cities.  The play tells a story of a once promising young novelist who has returned home after several years to celebrate Christmas with her family in Palm Springs, CA. However, the daughter’s return home turns tense after she announces that she’s published a tell all memoir about a family tragedy from the past.

The narrative of family tensions and travails are things we can all relate to, but the depth of the frustrations and personal tragedy addressed are thankfully uncharted territory for me.  The humorous lines interspersed and mostly delivered by the role of recovering alcoholic, Aunt/Sister played by Nancy Carroll go a long way to release that tension and provide many unexpected laughs.  Leaving the theater, I was left with the thought, we all need to be a bit more forgiving because reality isn’t always what it seems. If that message strikes home for you as well, you may want to go see this production.

SpeakEasy StageOther Desert Cities performances run through Saturday, February 9th.  You may purchase tickets at The Calderwood Pavilion box office on Tremont Street in the South End or by phone, 617-933-8600 or online at SpeakEasyStage.com

Lagerfeld’s lesbian couture raises eyebrows

LagerfeldFashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld, raised eyebrows and earned applause from the French GLBT community when he used fashion to express his support for a controversial French gay marriage law by sending two brides down the catwalk.  Interestingly, Lagerfeld has indicated that he is opposed to gay couples being allowed to adopt children, but that’s probably a discussion better suited for a future post. MBTA contemplates extending hours

MBTABostInno is reporting that the MBTA may be looking into extending service until 2:00am.  Late night transit service in Boston is a perennial topic that usually results in more talk than action, although it isn’t without precedent. I recall the “Night Owl” service where buses served specific train routes until 2:30am for a premium fare. However, that program was eventually axed in 2005 due to budget cuts.

Could this be more than just lip service from the Governor and others who seem to be in favor of extending the transit service? I’d like to think so. In addition to the many who find themselves stranded after a night out of drinking, I like to point out that working 9am to 5pm is now a thing of the past and thousands of residents work hours early into the morning when public transportation would be a welcome service. You may read more about this on BostInno’s website here.

40 years ago today

abortion rightsOn January 22, 1973 (40 years ago) the US Supreme Court legalized a woman’s right to choose to have a safe and legal abortion.

While I can appreciate arguments from those who oppose the legalization of abortion, I see this simply as an individual right that can be summed up as such, your body = your choice.

Are you an advocate for choice?  Learn from the LGBT movement and do not take your rights for granted.  The LGBT community learned this lesson the hard way as we watched both states and the federal government restrict our individual liberties through a combination of legislation and judicial rulings in the previous century and first few years of this one.

One Today: Richard Blanco

Richard-Blanco-PoetI love poetry even though sometimes I cannot follow or fully appreciate the prose.  Yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration featured Richard Blanco reading his poem One Today to the President and the nation.  Blanco is a Cuban-American who happens to be gay and lives in New England (Maine to be exact).  In lieu of posting the full text (which you can read here), I’ve inserted the video of his reading. His poem stresses unity and the common bonds that touch us all.

Boston Chops eyes a February 5th opening

Boston Chops South EndBoston Chops now lights up the corner of Washington and Union Park Street in the South End with the restaurants newly installed signage.  For those familiar with previous tenants, the dining space has been completely reconfigured, moving the bar from the front of the restaurant to the left side (Union Park Street).  The bar will be among the largest in the neighborhood boasting 30 seats.  In addition to the 110 seat restaurant a 20+ seat patio is also planned to allow patrons the chance to sit outside along Washington Street.

Zagat Boston indicates Boston Chops is targeting Tuesday, February 5th to open, but who can really say with any certainty? Thanks to friend and fellow blogger, Julian, for forwarding the Zagat post.

Opus Affair

Looking for something fun to do tomorrow night?  Opus Affair is hosting January’s monthly get together at the very cool West Bridge in Kendall Square.

Opus AffairWhen: Tuesday, Jan. 22nd at 6:00 PM
Where: West Bridge, 1 Kendall Square, Cambridge
Opus Affair is comprised primarily (but not exclusively) of young professionals and artists from the area who meet up each month to socialize.  Keeping with the group’s interest in supporting the local arts community, there is also a charitable drinking game (a.k.a the Punch Bowl Fund) where you may contribute $5 (cash only). In exchange for your contribution, you receive a drink ticket good for a glass of punch and a ballot to vote for one of the three featured arts groups. The organization with the most votes that night gets the money.

This month the Punch Bowl fund will be featuring:
The Fenway Alliance
Collective Creature (a Yes.Oui.Si. project)
MetroWest Opera

Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe

Mass Bearz Tea Dance On Sunday I went to the Mass Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe, which is held the third Sunday of every month. I didn’t know quite what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by how many people were there.  DJ Harrison Carmichael’s blend of disco and pop classics helped me forget it was a Sunday evening.

The next Mass Bearz Tea Dance at Club Cafe will be on Sunday, February 17th so mark your calendars if you’d like to check this out and head over with a group of friends. I’ve included some photos from yesterday’s tea dance. If you click on the photos the pictures will enlarge.

Patriots are damn handsome

New England PatriotsI’m the first to admit that I know absolutely nothing about football. Heck, I intentionally go grocery shopping when my brother tells me the New England Patriots are playing, because I know there will be less people there.

However, it seems to me that a lot of the guys who play for the New England Patriots are damn handsome so maybe I’ll check out the game later today. Pity you really can’t see them under all that padding and tights.

MLK brunch

MLK BrunchFor those of you who have the day off tomorrow, here is a suggestion. I wish I could join you but I’ll be up far earlier and working through the day. However, if I had the day off – I’m sure you’d find me here.

Don’t forget to bring your condiment

Safe SexBosGuy’s Saturday night tip: bring your own condiments.
