Off to Provincetown

Provincetown Frerry

I arrived in Ptown today.  I had hoped to take the fast ferry, which is a 90-minute journey from Boston to Provincetown, but the ferry companies were completely sold out this weekend so we drove down.  The drive was okay but I’m glad to be out of the car. I plan to spend the next four nights at the tip of the Cape in Ptown.

If you celebrate the 4th of July I’d like to wish you a pleasant holiday and hope you too can get away and relax a bit.

Why do you drink coffee

Boston GuyRecently I’ve seen several studies regarding potential health benefits of coffee; despite all the bad press that caffeine gets.  Just last week I read about studies that claim coffee may lower the risk of heart failure.

Not one of these studies point out the reasons I like to drink coffee; first it definitely helps me wake up in the morning; second it suppresses my appetite in the afternoon; and lastly it keeps me warm when I’m cold which is nearly always.

Do you love coffee? Who cares what all those scientists are saying.  What “benefits” do you derive from that delicious cup of java?

One more reason I love the beach

Boston GuyProvincetown will be full of guys who look like this as the tiny town fills with men from all over the world.  The weather forecast shows temps ranging from the mid 80s to low 90s (25 – 30 C).

What to do in Boston

Despite being a relatively small city, Boston has one of the largest 4th of July celebrations in the nation and is televised each year on CBS.

4th of julyThis year’s headline artist singing alongside the Boston Pops is Jennifer Hudson, and the host for the evening will be Michael Chiklis.

The entire event starts early in the day for those who want to stake out space along Boston’s beautiful Esplanade Park so they can watch and listen to the concert in person.

You can find out more about the event at www.july4th.org.

Aside from the obvious show on July 4th there are a few other suggestions or tips on ways you may celebrate and enjoy some of the city’s festivities leading up to the 4th of July.

Here are just a few of my suggestions.

Saturday, June 30th: Boston Navy Week Festivities by Day and Epic’s 4th of July Party by night The Tall Ships started arriving in Boston for “Navy Week” today.  A complete listing of all the festivities which are mostly along the Waterfront and in the Charlestown Navy Yard are on the event’s website.

Saturday night at the House of Blues in the Fenway is always gay night and Epic’s 4th of July party tonight should be fun.  Doors open at 10:30 but the party doesn’t really get started until midnight.

Sunday, July 1st:  Beach Day and Underbar by night Boston’s weather forecast shows the city will be in the low 90s for a third day in a row.  Be sure to get a respite from the heat and head to the beach. You can take the Commuter Rail to one of the beaches on the North or South shore or you can hop the “T” to the beach in Southie.

The Underbar in Boston’s theater district will be busy, busy, busy. Get there early to avoid the lines and enjoy Hot Mess Sunday.  The bar will start to fill up by midnight but you can beat the rush by arriving a bit early. Sunday nights at the Underbar can provide some of the best people watching around so check it out if you’ve not been.

Boston GuyMonday, July 2nd: Jacques salutes the Troops with their drag show Loose Lips – Padded Hips One of the best things about living in the US  is you can speak your mind and I have a feeling these ladies will have you rolling in your chairs if you head over to Jacques in Bay Village.

The show starts at 10:30 and there is more information on their website www.jacques-cabaret.com.

Tuesday, July 3rd:  Boston Pops at the Hatch Shell At 6PM the oval in front of the Hatch Shell opens and at 8:20 the Pops will play through their entire performance minus the super stars and fireworks.  If all you want to see is the 1812 Overture, get there before 9:30. The show concludes by 10:00.

Its Friday, go crazy

Boston Guy

I think this girl has the right idea so go a little crazy and indulge.

Have a great weekend.

Boston Navy Week starts today

BosGuyToday starts Boston Navy Week.  Be on the look out for sailors at the bars and roaming the streets of Boston.  If you’d like to see what official festivities and sites there are to see, you can check out the website at navyweek.org/boston2012.

Provincetown bartenders

Readers of this blog know that while I’m married to Boston, Provincetown is my mistress who I run off to every chance I get.

After visiting Provincetown for so many years, I’ve developed some friendships with several of the bartenders and I thought I’d feature a few of the men who pour me a stiff drink in a tribute post.

Crown and AnchorJoel Zea is one of my favorite bartenders and someone I consider a friend. Joel is part of the Crown & Anchor staff and divides his time between the Wave Bar and The Paramount Night Club. This crazy Puerto Rican is as sweet as sugar so be sure to say thank you when he hands over your drinks; manners matter.

Provincetown bartendersJohn Bosco and I attended the same small Catholic college. Ironic that I felt so alone while I was there and all along this handsome upper classman was on campus.  John works at the juggernaut also knows as The Boatslip which holds massive Tea Dances everyday.  Those fruity drinks John is making are a signature drink called Planters Punch.

Provincetown Bar TenderFlavio Nogueira works at the iconic Atlantic House which is actually just referred to as the A-House in Ptown.  You will usually find Flavio on weekends making drinks as fast as people can order them out on the back patio.  This affable bartender will perk up noticeably if you say “Obrigado”, Portuguese for “Thank You” when he hands you your drinks.

Provincetown bartendersChase Wyatt is one of the many friendly faces you may know if you’ve been coming to Provincetown for awhile.  Chase is flirtatious and fun to hang out with if you have the opportunity.  This season Chase is at the Velvet Lounge – a newish bar in Provincetown.  This Californian transplant who calls Ptown home pours a mean drink.

There are many other bars and bartenders and if you have a favorite I’ve overlooked, I’d welcome you to leave a comment.  Should you go to any of these bartenders, let them know BosGuy says hello and leave them an extra buck or two to show your appreciation.

Furry Friday

Boston GuyEach Friday I publish a photo of a guy for my Furry Friday post.  I think I’ll refer to this week’s post as a Daddy-themed Furry Friday.  Do you like? Hope you have a great day and relaxing weekend.

Past Furry Friday Posts

BosGuy brain teaser

Each Friday morning I pose a riddle for those who like that sort of thing.  Share this with friends and colleagues, and see if you can figure out this week’s “brain teaser”.  I’ll confirm responses in the afternoon in the comments section.

Jane was walking down the high street when she bumped into an old friend. “Hello, I haven’t seen or heard from you in years since we graduated” said Jane, “what’s happened to you?”

“Well, I got married to somebody you wouldn’t know. This is our son”, said the friend who was holding hands with a little boy.

“Hello and what’s your name?” said Jane to the boy.

“It’s the same as Daddy’s”.

“Ah so it’s Peter is it?” said Jane

How did Jane know?

Friday cannot come fast enough

Boston GuyIt is Thursday afternoon and after tomorrow I will be out of the office for an entire week.

I can hardly wait to turn on my email out of office message and turn off my computer.  It has been a very long month and I’m ready to let go and relax for more than 48 hours.

Do  you have any plans for the coming weekend? Do tell.

Wesley Warren’s 100lbs scrotum

100lbs ScrotumFile this post under “Gross and Disgusting”. Wesley Warren Jr. suffers from a bizarre medical condition that has resulted in excessive watery fluid collecting around his testicles (Eeewww!!!)

Wesley denies he has turned down the chance to have surgery because he likes the notoriety.  The surgery does carry significant risk that his penis and testicles could have to be completely removed if surgeons couldn’t stop the bleeding (again Eeewww!!!)

Whatever the real reason, I can’t help but feel badly for this man walking around with a 100lbs scrotum.  Ick… Can’t stop reading? You can check out the full story on Huffington Post.

Suddenly it makes sense

LacrosseI know that I’ve previously mentioned my admiration and my complete lack of understanding pertaining to lacrosse, which appears to entail running like a mad man and whacking people with their sticks.  There is something very impressive about this photo of lacrosse player, Scott Rogers.  The even if the game seems utter nonsense, the nature of the appeal is returning and suddenly it all makes sense again.

CNN Headline: Affordable Care Act constitutional

ACA RulingThere are nuances and changes in particular with regards to Medicaid as I understand it but conservative Chief Justice Roberts surprised everyone by ruling with the court’s more liberal justices in a 5-4 split court decision.

Philip Defranco: Oreo controversy

I’m sure by now you’ve seen the rainbow Oreo cookie picture and perhaps you’ve even heard about the ridiculous backlash from the Evangelicals and Christian Conservatives in the US.

Yesterday’s Philip DeFranco Show on YouTube pretty much summed up my feelings about this too.

It’s a f*cking cookie guys!?! Chill

You can watch the entire broadcast or just listen to the bit about “Oreo-gate” since he leads with the story.
