Victor Corona comes to Boston this week

Calling all club kids: NYU sociologist, Victor P. Corona comes to Boston this week for a book signing at 6PM at the Newton Center Barnes & Noble on Wednesday for his book Night Class: A Downtown Memoir.

Meet this club kid turned professor and get a signed copy of  his book which dishes on meeting Lady Gaga’s old Lower East Side tribe, diving into the midnight madness of NYC’s wild hotspot, The Box, and hanging out with grown up Limelight club kids and the surviving Factory Superstars who are still shadowed by their friendship with Andy Warhol.

Then on Thursday, join Corona who will be at a party in downtown Boston with Season 9 RuPaul Drag Race contestant (and fellow Bostonian) Charlie Hides at a party hosted by the divine Dusty Moorehead at Whiskey Saigon.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

New England foliageIn what has become an unintentional tradition, each October I post this poem on my blog. It is one of my favorite poems and happens to be by the famous 20th century New England poet, Robert Frost.

Nothing gold can stay was inspired by the fall foliage in New England. Despite the fact that the poem was written nearly 100 years ago, back in 1923, it  remains current and still inspires.

Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Mayor Marty Walsh meets Sergio

Marty Walsh and Sergio This past week, while I was in New York for work Mayor Marty Walsh hosted a fundraiser at Club Cafe to talk to the LGBTQ community, and as you can see Sergio was able to meet the Mayor, who was only too happy to pose with his custom shirt, “LGBTQ 4 Marty”.

Boston’s Gay community is often criticized for many things it is not; it’s not friendly; it doesn’t have a great night life; it doesn’t have a neighborhood; etc… but one thing nearly everyone can agree is that Boston’s LGBTQ community can raise money and deliver votes.

Below are a couple photos from the event at Club Cafe that the Committee to Elect Marty Walsh shared with me. Below those photos, I have also included a link where you can get more information about the citywide elections, that take place the first Tuesday of November.

Photos below are courtesy of the Committee to Elect Marty Walsh

Municipal elections will take place on Tuesday, November 7th. For more information about voting visit, boston.gov/departments/election.

Head of the Charles Regatta is this Saturday and Sunday

Head of Charles Regatta

Head of the Charles regatta is Saturday & Sunday, October 21-22

Every city has their own traditions and events that are distinctly their own. I like to write about these events here in Boston because it is easy to take them for granted or overlook how they contribute to and enrich the city. One such unique tradition which I associate with the autumn is the Head of the Charles Regatta.

The annual event typically occurs while foliage is nearing its peak each year in Boston and it can make for a beautiful backdrop for the 11,000+ athletes who are expected come to compete in the world’s largest regatta this weekend.

The Head Of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) is a Boston area tradition that dates back to 1965 and has evolved into the world’s largest rowing competition that spans two days, drawing more than 400,000 spectators who line the banks of the Charles River on both the Cambridge and Boston sides. Be sure to check it out. I prefer to watch from the Cambridge side between the Harvard footbridge and the JFK bridge but there really isn’t a bad place to watch

For more information about this world class event visit hocr.org or check out this really interesting infographic Boston Magazine published last year (2016) about this historic and truly world class event.
