Walking with sandwiches: Ben’s New Year’s resolution

Many people make New Year’s resolutions each year and it is usually right about now that a lot of us give up on them. I stumbled upon this really inspiring YouTube video of someone who has an interesting story that I wanted to share.

Mega development proposed for downtown Boston

Downtown Boston mega development

Source: boston.curbed.com

Earlier this week Curbed Boston reported that the city and state are working together to turn a 5.5 acre site owned by the state at 185 Kneeland Street (sandwiched between South Station, Chinatown and the Expressway) into a “mega-development” (those were Curbed Boston’s words – not mine).

The state plans to host public-input sessions on any would-be development beginning in early March and a request for proposals could go out after that. According to the article, state officials are asking developers to think big – really big, suggesting the site accommodate 2,000,000 square feet with a sizable chunk of that dedicated to housing (hopefully affordable housing).

This could be a great opportunity for the city to add housing and build out a section of land that can bring taxable revenue to the state and city. I’ll be curious to see how this monster development opportunity progresses.

Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

poetry, family, NH, LakeI thought it appropriate to share a poem by Frost, that pays tribute to this season so I’m re-posting, Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening.

The photo is of me and that is my parent’s house at Lake Winnipesaukee in the background. Sergio snapped the photograph when we were returning home after a long walk. You’ll note the streets hadn’t even been plowed and it felt like we were the only ones around.  The photo remains one of my favorites.

STOPPING BY WOODS ON A SNOWY EVENING

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Pretty in Pink 30th anniversary screening this weekend

Pretty in PinkI loved everything about Pretty in Pink when it came out in 1986 – the actors, the story line and of course the soundtrack.  Since the weather in Boston is going to be miserable this weekend, you might want to catch the anniversary showing.

For those who never saw Pretty in Pink, the movie revolves around a high school girl (played by Molly Ringwald) from the wrong side of town and a wealthy heart-throb (played by Andrew McCarthy) and includes all the teenage angst and drama one could imagine in this classic John Hughes film.

Where: Showcase Cinema de Lux Revere
Admission: $13.50
Showtimes and Tickets: Here

Cheapest places to travel each month of the year

Gay TravelAnyone who reads this blog knows that Sergio and I love our home but we love traveling even more so when I read Travel & Leisure article, “The Cheapest Places to Travel Each Month of the Year” I knew I would want to share this.

The article claims that if you plan your vacation right you can save a bundle; world class cities like Melbourne, Australia in January are surprisingly affordable; Buenos Aires is beautiful in March; and Fort Lauderdale offers great deals in May; Boston happens to be a steal in July (who knew); and New Orleans offers great deals in October just in time for their benefit for Project Lazarus.

Governing Magazine quantifies gentrification in Boston’s neighborhoods

Governing, real estateReal estate professionals are going to find Governing’s analysis of the impact and degree to which neighborhoods have gentrified in the nation’s 50 largest cities to be fascinating. The finding that jumped out to me was, that gentrification greatly accelerated in several cities but not everywhere.

For those who think ‘gentrification’ is a dirty word, you may be pleased to note that while six neighborhoods (J.P., Fenway, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, and the South End) were identified, the impact is not as noticeable as it is in other cities. You can see how gentrification is impacting your home city by linking here.  If you’d like to take a closer look at the interactive map Governing Magazine created for Boston (shown above) link here.
