MFA Boston open and free to public on MLK day

MFA Art of the Americas wing opensEnjoy free admission to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day and surround yourself with art, culture and community. With the weather outside so cold, come and check out Boston’s largest museum and lose yourself for an hour or two. You may be surprised by what you find and how much you enjoy visiting.

More information about the MFA and their hours on MLK day, here.

Gardner Museum free on MLK day

Free Fun FridaysDo you have Martin Luther King day off?  The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is open and free to the public starting at 11AM on first come, first serve basis.  It is a great opportunity to peruse the museum’s eclectic art collection and take in the view of the tiny Venetian courtyard with grass and flowers in bloom.

You may recall a visit to the Gardner Museum was one of my suggestions on how to help fend off the Winter blues. If the cold spell has you down, head over to the museum and lose yourself for an hour or two in this very special place.

More information about the Gardner Museum and hours is available here.

Here Comes Your Man by the Pixies

I love my pop star divas as much as the next guy but I was a regular listener to WFNX-FM 101.7 Boston for years and bands like the Pixies will always have a special place in my heart. I can’t think of a better song for a Saturday night for all you who may be heading out tonight for drinks and maybe a little more.

SRV: South End restaurant to open next week

south end restaurant, diningA press release issued earlier this week indicates that SRV, which stands for Serene Republic of Venice, will become the South End’s newest restaurant when they formally open next week on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18th. The website does not have any information and at the time I wrote this post one could not make reservations on OpenTable.com so it may be prudent to call ahead and check if you plan to try the new Italian restaurant.

Cauke for President

Mike Cauke for PresidentFed up with all politics as usual? Tired of listening to the loudmouths and bickering?  Perhaps you’d like Cauke.  Check out this satirical take on the modern political process. Better looking than disgraced US Representative, Aaron Schock and more entertaining than watching a Republican Presidential debate, check out the faux campaign site www.cauke2016.com and follow him on Instagram or Twitter.

For those of you who live in Boston, you may recognize Cauke who lives here and who I posted a photo of on my blog here.

Grindr survey on PrEP

TruvadaLast fall Grindr released the video below to share their survey findings after partnering with the CDC, SFAF and Gilead.  The nationwide survey looked at current attitudes, usage and questions regarding PrEP.

What is PrEP?  PrEP (also sometimes referred to as Truvada) is a daily pill that has been approved by the FDA and been shown to be safe and effective in preventing HIV’s ability to copy itself in your body after you’ve been exposed.

According to the survey findings many gay men who are sexually active are afraid to ask their doctors about PrEP and 1 in 10 had trouble getting their doctors to prescribe them the medication (that statistic was double for black respondents).

If you would like to learn more about PrEP but don’t know where to turn you can email Fenway Health at information@fenwayhealth.org or call them during business hours at (857) 313-6590.

New restaurant Scofflaw looks to open at Ink Block

ScofflawAnother restaurant and bar looks like it will be opening in the South End’s Ink Block.  You may recall back in November I wrote about Bar Mezzana which is an Italian restaurant that is aiming for a spring 2016 opening in the 360 Harrison Ave building.  This new restaurant – rumored to be called Scofflaw – will be in the 300 Harrison Avenue building.

The new space is hoping to acquire the Lower Mills Tavern liquor license. A hearing for the request was scheduled for Wednesday, January 6th.  You can read more about the new restaurant from, Boston Restaurant Talk.

345 Harrison Avenue in South End update

Nordblom, South End, SoWa

345 Harrison Avenue in Boston’s South End

You may not have noticed but the old Greybar building that occupied a city block between Washington Street and Harrison Ave has been demolished and construction appears to be underway (or soon to be underway) for the new residential development currently known by its address, 345 Harrison Ave.

Tomorrow the BRA Board of Directors will meet and is expected to approve changes to the project.  According to the BRA agenda notes, the developer – Nordblom – would like to increase the retail space from 30,000 to 40,000 square feet, decrease the number of units from 602 to 587 apartments and increase the number of parking spaces to 270 spaces.  Who knows when this project will finally be finished but it is nice to see activity here and it will be interesting to see how the project will add life to this part of the South End.
