Holy Trinity German Church goes on the market

Holy Trinity Church Shawmut Avenue South End BostonThe Catholic Archdiocese of Boston has placed the Holy Trinity German Church at 136 Shawmut Avenue in the South End on the market and is likely to be converted into apartments or condos. The 1877 granite building is 26,900 square feet and has a four story residence and office space.  This section of the South End that leads up to the Mass Pike (I-90) has seen a lot of development in the past few years and I welcome the conversion of this space into a building that will hopefully increase foot traffic and welcome more people into the neighborhood.  You may check out the property listing here.

2014 Ptown Independence Parties

Chris HarrisProvincetown is about to get real crowded as tens of thousands of men visit for the Independence Week parties starting on Saturday, June 28th. The entire town will be filled to capacity but don’t be deterred. Be sure to check out the Boatslip’s massive tea dance each day, visit some of the clubs like the Atlantic House (A-House) and certainly catch a show while you visit.

Also be sure to visit The Crown & Anchor which will host to some great parties and consider getting tickets party promoter Chris Harris’ events.  For details about the parties at The Crown & Anchor or to purchase their party passes visit their website, onlyatthecrown.com/independence.

Here are photos I snapped from July 4th week in 2013 in Ptown.

2014 National gay blood drive

National Gay Blood DriveDid you know the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) bans gay & bisexual men from donating blood? On July 11th a nationwide blood drive will take place to bring attention to the ban and hopefully help save lives.

Sign the petition by clicking on the link below

Tell HHS & FDA to end the ban against Gay & Bisexual male donors

Participating Gay/Bisexual men who bring an eligible donor or ally come to donate blood in Boston will also be asked to fill out a message to the FDA and sign a White House Petition to end this pointless ban.  The goal in Boston is to fill every blood donation appointment on Friday, July 11th, to help meet the White House Petition goal of 100,000 signatures gathered from across the US.

WHEN: Friday, July 11th,  10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

How gun violence affects women in America

Gun Violence against womenThis is something I find profoundly disappointing in my country, but what really upsets me is the blasé attitude by a majority of Americans that believe this is the price you pay for living in a free society.  A “free society” somehow equates to having looser gun laws that allow purchasing and owning more and more powerful guns.

Here is a sensible article by Arkadi Gerney and Chelsea Parsons on four things America could do to help protect women from gun violence. They are all common sense solutions (e.g. prevent convicted abusers, stalkers and people subject to restraining orders from possessing a gun), but I hold out little hope that common sense solutions will be followed.

Statistics like the one shown above make me wonder if America even has a threshold that can be crossed before legislative changes are made.  Back in 2012 I thought the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was our limit – I was wrong.

Movies by Moonlight Fridays at Boston Harbor Hotel

Rowes Wharf Music and a MovieThe Rowes Wharf Sea Grille at Boston Harbor Hotel hosts a summer movie series called Music & Movie Fridays (in past years called “Movies by Moonlight”).  An outdoor screen is set up on the side of the large gazebo so restaurant patrons and pedestrians can watch a classic movie along Boston’s waterfront.  Similar to the Free Friday Flicks hosted at the Hatch Shell – these movies are open to the public, but unlike the shows at the Hatch Shell this attracts fewer children.

The Postman Always Rings Twice
Starring:  John Garfield & Lana Turner
Movie time: Sunset at 8:24PM

Brian Sims hosting “Bears and Beers” mixer during Bear Week

Brian Sims Bear Week in ProvincetownThe ever so dreamy PA State Representative, Brian Sims, who I first wrote about back in 2012 (as one of my Men of Twittah) and more recently wrote about in my post, Lusting After Brian Sims, will be in Provincetown during Bear Week hosting a fundraiser for his campaign.

Lord knows I’ve spent a significant amount of time scouring the internet for a shirtless photograph of this handsome, progressive, gay state representative.  Since I won’t be in Ptown during bear week, I’m encouraging anyone who might be there to be on the look out for this handsome Pennsylvanian sunning himself.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Provincetown, Ptown, BoatslipSummer Drinks that won’t weigh you down.

The season of pool parties, sunbathing and beach days is upon us and nothing compliments the summer sun like an ice cold 300 calorie margarita. So refreshing that you can’t stop after one, and 2 or 3 drinks later you’re feeling an unfulfilling buzz that cost you about 900 calories. Check out these 3 alternatives that will give you the same refreshment with less than half the calories, while minimizing your chances of a hangover.

Vodka+soda+lime:  One shot of Vodka, Soda water, and spritz of lemon, lime or both. This bubbly, light, and refreshing beverage is well under 100 calories and very drinkable pool side. Try to a glass of water between every drink to keep hydrated, you’ll thank yourself in the morning.

Tequila+Half cup orange juice+tonic water+lemon and lime: Two parts tequila, one part orange juice (fresh squeezed preferred), one part soda water, spritz of lemon and lime. This option is great for a Sunday brunch or enjoy on the beach. The vitamin C will help metabolize the alcohol more efficiently, that means your co-workers won’t notice any signs of the good time you had over weekend. Depending on your ratios, this is ~150 calories.

Light Beer:  Miller genuine draft 64 is the lowest calorie option.  If you’re a beer drinker, opt for the lower calorie option of your favorite brand. With some craft beers totalling 300 calories for a 12 oz bottle, these can be detrimental to your weight loss goals.

Remember to always enjoy responsibly, and stay hydrated while drinking. Cheers!
