Hightown premieres on STARZ May 17

Provincetown, PtownFor those of you who love Provincetown and are looking for something new to watch, check out Hightown on STARZ, which premieres Sunday, May 17th.

Shot in Provincetown, Mass. the show centers on Jackie Quinones played by actress Monica Raymund (Chicago Fire) as a gay fisheries agent, who’s life gets thrown into disarray when she discovers a dead body on the beach – another casualty of Cape Cod’s opioid epidemic. As a result of the trauma, Jackie takes her first steps toward becoming sober until she becomes convinced that it’s up to her to solve the murder at which point things spiral out a bit out of control.  Hightown on STARZ is eight episodes and premieres this Sunday.

A couple of weeks ago a reader reached  out to let me know how much he liked this weekly post and to tell  me about Svenska Kiltsällskapet The Swedish Kilt Society, which take great pride in hosting events where people can make friends and have fun together. The society promotes everyone’s right to be and dress the way they like and welcome everyone.

My sincere apologies for losing the name of the reader who reached out. I would’ve liked to say thank you for letting me know about this Swedish society. You look like a fun group.

Monday morning mancandy

Last week Boston’s Mayor Marty Walsh suspended  all large events and gatherings in the city through Labor Day Weekend so I’m starting to wonder if these Monday Morning Mancandy posts will become a fixture rather than just a filler as we continue to cope with the aftermath of COVID-19. Boston sees smallest drop off in hiring in US

LGBT Boston, gay life bostonThe 20 biggest American cities saw significant drop in hiring in April according to LinkedIn. With one exception – Boston. Looking at regional trends, LinkedIn found that all but one of the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan areas showed an April drop of 20% to 40% in their hiring rates, as compared with the previous month. Boston by contrast, saw its hiring decline just 6.8% month-over-month in April.

The industries that have fared best thus far (health care, education and technology) comprise a significant, if not an out-sized, footprint in Boston’s economy and is credited for such a shallow dip in hiring in the region.

US  unemployment rate soars to 14.7%

This may be of little comfort to those who have lost their jobs or seen their hours and income reduced, but it hopefully means that Boston remains more resilient and as a region we can emerge from this economic downturn more quickly. You can read the full article on LinkedIn here: April’s U.S. hiring plunged 23.9%, but a few vital sectors kept adding people.

Happy Mother’s Day

I wanted to take a moment to say Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom, my two sisters Elizabeth and Susan, my sister-in-law Ashley, my mother-in-law, Terezinha and all the other wonderful Moms out there.  This is the first time in several years that I was not able to send my family members a card or visit with  them but they are definitely in my thoughts today and always.

GROWLr live streaming shows starting today

Last month the gay “dating app” GROWLr announced that they would start offering live-streaming broadcasts and video chats to its members as a way to help people feel connected and provide entertaining distractions while staying at home and practicing social distancing.

For example, users can play in “Next Date” mode, a feature that converts a live-stream into a mini-dating game where you are prompted with questions, and based on responses, decide whether to move on or continue the date.

More interesting (to me) is the live programming that the GROWLr team has come up with that starts tonight with gay rapper Big Dipper and Jackie Beat this Saturday. Also be sure to check out Ms. Varla Jean Merman perform live on Saturday, May 16th. All shows are free to everyone on the GROWLr app.
