Gay book reviews blog

gay-book-reviews-blogWith the holidays in full swing and Christmas in less than two weeks a lot of you may be hopping on planes and traveling to get back to family.  Should you be looking for recommendations for gay themed novels to pass the time while you are traveling or off from work, I wanted to point out the blog Gay Book Reviews.

Most of the reviews are of gay romance novels, which isn’t exactly my favorite genre but there are some mysteries and suspense novels interspersed. I want to see more LGBT-themed literature regardless of the genre so I wanted to give the site a shout out to encourage anyone looking for book suggestions to check out the blog.  Links are provided to Amazon.com for the books that are reviewed to make it easier to download to your kindle or order online for delivery.

Lion’s Tail cocktail lounge rumored to open in Ink Block this week

lions-tail-ink-block-south-endLocated next to Fuji on Harrison Ave in the Ink Block, Lion’s Tail is rumored to possibly open this coming weekend.  According to a write up in Boston Magazine the cocktail bar and restaurant will accommodate approximately 120 people, and the space will have a long, curving bar that spans the room, two communal high-tops, and dining tables with tufted black leather banquettes.

The space is marketed as a speakeasy which strikes me as odd, considering it is in the Ink Block which gives off anything but an old-time speakeasy vibe. Having said that, I’m game anytime a new bar or restaurant wants to open in the neighborhood and I look forward to checking out Lion’s Tail once they open.

You can follow Lion’s Tail on Facebook by liking their page, here. For more information you can read the Boston Magazine article, here.

Americans are spending a lot more on holiday travel

TravelAccording to a recent American Express survey of US households that have an annual income of $100,000 or more the average per person spend is expected to rise by more than 150% to $1,521 from just $605 in 2015.

The top reason to travel cited by consumers this holiday season is to visit family or friends. The second most cited reason for travel is to take a vacation, but the cost for the average American family holiday vacation has jumped and is expected to cost slightly more than $9,000. Among those traveling during the holiday season, the majority will stay within the U.S. with nearly one out of every three Americans naming the Northeast as their destination.

You can read more about these findings from American Express, here.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle:
I go in hard. I come out soft. You love to blow me. What am I?

24/7 study ranks Massachusetts best in nation

massachusettsMassachusetts is never going to win congeniality or weather accolades. If these are what matter most then ignore this survey’s findings since neither were evaluated by 24/7  in a report they published last week that looked at the poverty rates, education and life expectancy to determine the quality of life in each state.

Here is a quick recap on why the Bay State a.k.a. Massachusetts took the top spot, according to the 24/7 Wall St. report:

  • More than 2 out of 5 adults have at least a bachelor’s degree: The highest ratio of any state. Theoretically, the high level of education helps lower the poverty rate.
  • The poverty rate is 11.5%, which is lower than the U.S. average.
  • Massachusetts residents’ life expectancy at birth is 80.2 year old, the fifth highest in the nation, signifying a healthy state.

The top five best states to live in according to the list are Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Minnesota and New Jersey. The lowest ranked states were Mississippi, West Virginia, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama and Kentucky.  Find this interesting? Click here to read the full report.

BosGuy travel tips

travel tipsIt is rare for us to return from a vacation feeling anything but rested and happy, but I know that is not always the case for everyone.  Part of the trick to getting back into the swing of things is making sure that your body and mind actually have time to process that you are going back to work.

Here are three tips that make returning from your vacation a lot easier and cost next to nothing to do.

1 – Travel during the middle of the week: If you are going to take a week off from work (assuming you work Monday – Friday), travel during the middle of the week. Why travel Wednesday to Wednesday? You make your life much easier, because your vacation is book ended by a short work week before and after your time out of the office. Who doesn’t love short work weeks?

2 – Treat yourself: Having a treat at home gives you something to look forward to. Often before we leave on vacation we’ll make sure we have a nice bottle of Champagne in the refrigerator awaiting our return so on our first night back we can enjoy a few toasts and reminisce about our trip. I have other friends who book themselves a massage after vacations. Pick a treat that you would like and make sure it is scheduled or waiting for you when you return home.

3 – Take an extra day off to get your life in order: If you can, take an extra day off after arriving home. This way when you return home you can still feel like you are on vacation, and use the extra day off to get your life in order. Running errands on a weekday is so much easier.

These tips may not be for everyone and we don’t necessarily always follow these for every vacation, but they really go a long way to prolonging the post-vacation glow; especially tip number 1 – there is nothing better than coming back to a short work week.

Hairspray Live on NBC tonight 8PM ET

pop cuture, musicalsI’ve loved every version of Hairspray, starting with the original movie written and directed by John Waters in 1988. The musical which came later to Broadway and was then remade into a movie musical lacks the emotional impact of the original, but I still love it.

Set your DVRs if you’ll be out so you can watch this fun musical which will be live on NBC tonight starting at 8PM ET / 7PM CT.
