Mass AG Maura Healey launches hotline to report harassment of minority groups

Boston, MassEarlier this week Massachusetts’ Attorney General, Maura Healy, announced the State would launch a new hotline to report harassment and intimidation of minority groups. Residents are encouraged to call 1-800-994-3228 or fill out a civil rights complaint form online if they witness or experience bias-motivated threats, harassment or violence against racial, ethnic and religious minorities, women, immigrants and lesbian, gay and transgender individuals.

Healey, an openly gay Democrat, said she’s launching the hotline after reports that people across the country have been targeted and harassed since the election of Donald Trump as president.

Much thanks to my friend, Tony, for sharing this week’s submission. As my regular readers know, I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price.

Restaurant review: Marliave

marliave-boston

If you’ve lived in Boston long enough you’ve probably dined at Marliave. The restaurant is located down Bosworth Street – a nondescript street between Downtown Crossing and the Granary Burial Grounds. Marliave has been operating since it first opened in 1885, and is named after the original owner, Henry Marliave, a French immigrant from Paris.

Tracey, Life Food Wine, restaurant review

Life Food Wine blogger and BFF Tracey modeling Marliave’s cocktail menu

I recently joined my friend and fellow blogger from Life Food Wine to visit the restaurant. While the space could seriously use some renovations, I can appreciate how regulars may like the eccentric layout and idiosyncrasies of the space. While we both really loved the cocktail menu, we ended up (as we normally do) enjoying a lovely bottle of wine to accompany our meal.

Diners familiar with the establishment will recognize the menu since little has changed; perhaps a sign that the restaurant knows what their clientele like. The two page menu is divided into what I think of as starters or lighter fare: raw bar, appetizers and eggs, that range in price from just a few dollars for raw bar which are priced individually to $18 with most in the $10-$12 range.  The second page of the menu has the main dishes and sides which include: pastas, meat, fish and sandwiches. These range from $15-$36 with most options in the low $20 range, making the Marliave an excellent value when you consider the quality of the food and service that has remained fairly consistent over the years.

marliave-beat-salad

Marliave’s tower of roasted beets $12

We started our dinner with a very fall inspired plate of roasted beets that were topped with arugula and stacked high with goat cheese that was slathered on almost like a frosting between three layers of beets.

The salad was beautifully assembled and presented with spiced walnuts and drops of aged balsamic and lemon vinaigrette.

marliave-serving-tray

Serving trays add a sense of drama to the service at Marliave

After clearing the salad, our skilled server brought over our main plates in what can only be described as an impressive presentation (yet again) with our dinners served to us like royalty in these serving trays. Want to impress a date? Take them to a restaurant where their meal is presented with a serving tray. I had to prevent myself from saying “Voila!” when our server lifted the lids.

marliave-salmon

Marliave’s wild salmon $30

Tracey opted for the chicken under a brick which was served with a mushroom risotto for $26. Since I don’t like to have bricks with my dinner I opted after much deliberation for the wild salmon. The filet was cooked exactly as I requested and served with a medley of vegetables and a garlic aioli.

My latest visit to the Marliave was a nice change to my regular dining routine and reminded me that the restaurant continues to provide excellent service and a solid dining experience making it a great option for a date, night out with friends or an evening with colleagues.

Boston Ballet presents The Nutcracker

Boston Ballet NutcrackerNext Friday The Boston Ballet is opening night for The Nutcracker. Each year I like to give this classic ballet a plug, because the entire experience from walking into the beautifully decorated Boston Opera House to watching the Boston Ballet’s production puts me in such a wonderful mood. It is something I wish everyone would experience.

Why Sergio and I are wearing a safety pin

UnityHave you noticed photos of friends on social media wearing safety pins starting to crop up over the past week? With several news outlets reporting a sudden rise in hate crimes some  have started to wear safety pins. Wearing the safety pins sends a message that those individuals are “safe” allies, willing to step forward and accompany anyone feeling targeted or marginalized.

According to multiple news outlets, there has been a rise in hate crimes over the past week. A USA Today article was one of several written. I found their headline unsettling, Post-election spate of hate crimes worse than post-9/11, experts say, but what bothered me the most about the article was how little it surprised me. This quote shared on Facebook by my friend Don Hamel nicely articulates why I’m not surprised and why I’m so disappointed.

Not all Trump voters are racist, but all of them decided that racism (or homophobia, etc) isn’t a dealbreaker. And to me that is racism. It is easier to be racist to a large group of people you can’t see, don’t know, etc, as opposed to your neighbor or family member, but to me it’s racism just the same.

As Van Jones put it, Trump was willing to “throw some of us away to appeal more deeply to others”, and voting for him signifies that you were willing to throw some people away to get your agenda (which honestly may not even happen…what are the chances of Trump really helping the middle class or fixing healthcare).

I know some people commenting here who voted for Trump are loving and wonderful people but it’s just really really hard to get past the fact that racism, sexism, homophobia, etc was not a dealbreaker for people…

Starting in December, City Hall Plaza will look radically different with a custom-designed outdoor skating path will span approximately 11,000 square feet.

The City’s release said, “Open to the public seven days a week, Bostonians and visitors alike will be dazzled by the winter activities, holiday shopping from a mix of local and international vendors, an eclectic array of hospitality experiences at the Urban Lodge, Vinopolis Interactive Wine Experiences, The Chocolate Story, and attractions including Santa’s House and a pedal-powered Holiday Tree.”

Disheartened by the election? Read, It’s Not Over

Michelangelo SignorileFor those of you who are nervous about a Trump Administration, I would recommend you buy Michelangelo Signorile’s book, It’s Not Over

Signorile postulates that the progress the LGBTQ community has made during the Obama Administration has infuriated the Right and stiffened the resolve of social conservatives who are determined to win this cultural war.  He also turns a critical eye to many of our supposed “allies” in Washington, the media and Hollywood  who too often remain complacent and in the words of the book “become a roadblock to progress.”

While I doubt Signorile could’ve predicted a Trump victory, much of what he warns of happening in his book does appear to unfold. Take heart by taking a closer look at his suggestions for how to combat those darker forces in our society and politics, which now feel emboldened by a Trump Presidency. With roughly half of all Americans casting their vote for Donald Trump, the next two years must be spent building bridges with those who voted for Trump as a protest against Clinton but typically vote Democrat and also rallying those who opted not to go to the polls to ensure even more Americans vote in 2020.
